Rapid Pest Risk Analysis for Tropidosteptes pacificus This document provides a rapid assessment of the risks posed by the pest to the UK in order to assist Risk Managers decide on a response to a new or revised pest threat. It does not constitute a detailed Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) but includes advice on whether it would be helpful to develop such a PRA and, if so, whether the PRA area should be the UK or the EU and whether to use the UK or the EPPO PRA scheme. STAGE 1: INITIATION 1. What is the name of the pest? Tropidosteptes pacificus (Van Duzee) (Hemiptera: Miridae). Originally described as Neoborus pacificus Van Duzee, 1921. T. pacificus is commonly known as the ash mirid plant bug. 2. What is the pest’s status in the EC Plant Health Directive (Council Directive 2000/29/EC 1) and in the lists of EPPO 2? Tropidosteptes pacificus is not listed in the EU plant health legislation or in the EPPO A2 list. 3. What is the reason for the rapid assessment? T. pacificus was found outdoors at two public parks in London during 2012. Adults were collected (using a sweep net) from mature European ash ( Fraxinus excelsior ) trees at Alexandra Palace, North London, in June (first generation) and September (second generation, hundreds of bugs were present) (Bantock & Stewart, 2013; Nau, 2013; Stubbs, 2013), and a single adult was caught in a trap at a park in South Kensington (Bantock, pers. comm., 2013). A risk assessment has been requested to help inform decisions regarding further regulation of ash trees. -

Gann, Executive Director Submitted to CarolAnn Sharkey Key West Botanical Garden 5210 College Road Key West, Florida 33040 and Kate Marks Heritage Preservation 1012 14th Street, NW, Suite 1200 Washington DC 20005 Introduction The Key West Botanical Garden (KWBG) is located at 5210 College Road on Stock Island, Monroe County, Florida. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths. -

These flowers are borne individually or in clusters of three or four along the branches, and they occur in the winter and early spring before the new leaves emerge. The fruits are black berries that ripen in the spring and summer. The birds favor these berries, and the plant produces the fruits in abundance.
