The Committee met, pursuant to notice, at 9:30 a.m., at NASA Lewis Research Center, 21000 Brookpark Road, Cleveland, Ohio, Hon. John Glenn, Chairman of the Committee, presiding. Present: Senator Glenn. OPENING STATEMENT OF SENATOR GLENN Chairman GLENN. The hearing will be in order. This is an official meeting of the Governmental Affairs Committee that I chair in Washington. We hold field hearings on occasion in different states when there is an issue that a particular state has expertise that would be of benefit to us and where we could gain more by having a field hearing than just calling people to Washingtonfor the usual routine hearing there. A record is being kept, and the report will be made and filed of the proceedings here today for the rest of the Committee and for the staff in Washington. We particularly appre- ciate all those who are willing to take part in the hearing today. Today we will examine the current reform efforts in science and math education at the Federal and state levels. The Governmental Affairs Committee has oversight jurisdiction with regard to the ef- ficiency, the economy, and the effectiveness of all Federal agencies. That's a big order when you're talking about the Federal Govern- ment. This includes the Department of Education, and the Nation- al Science Foundation. Additionally, our jurisdiction also includes the study of the relations of state and local governments with the Federal Government. We will focus specifically upon the experiences of Ohio. I'm very pleased that the Committee is holding this hearing in Cleveland and, in particular, at the NASA Lewis Research C,enter. In sur- roundings like these at this center, we are reminded of our coun- try's successes some years ago in space and the ones going on even today. The crew of the space shuttle Columbia, in the longest shut- tle flight yet, will be returning tomorrow morning after a mission that concentrates specifically on scientific projects. We're reminded of what went into that success, all the study, all the math, all the science, and all the engineering. Going back in the early 1960s, John Kennedy made the state- ment, "Now is clearly the time to take longer stridestime for a (1) 2 new American enterprisetime for this nation to take a leading role in space achievement which, in manyways, may hold the key to our future on earth." So we're very glad to be here at NASA Lewis this morning. President Kennedy's words are equally true today whenwe think about reforming science and math education. It is past time for this nation to commit itself to improving our educational systems across the board and to improve math and science education in particular. And all of our witnesses and spectators believe,as I do, that education is the fuel which has propelled the United States to world leadership in the 20th century. If we are to retain this lead- ership in the 21st century, we can't be satisfied with the status quo. In many speeches, I've challenged an audience tosay, "What do you think? If you had to name two things that made this country great, what would they be?" And someone always says, "Well, we had great resources." And it's true. We did. We had the fruited plain and purple mountains' majesty and majestic rivers flowing to the sea thatwe sing about. But my two nominees would not be just ourresources because many places in the world had great resources and did not develop the way we did. I would submit that the first elementwas educa- tion. Ranko Bojanic (aka Bojanic)´ was born on November 12, 1924 in Breza, Yugoslavia (currently Bosnia and Hercegovina) and he was raised in its capital, Belgrade. Ranko studied mathematics at the University of Belgrade where he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in 1950. After graduating, he continued his studies at the Mathematics Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences, where he was awarded Doctorate in Mathematics in 1953. Jovan Karamata was his doctoral advisor. Permanent positions were scarce in the 1950s Europe so he accepted several two year visiting positions first at various universities in Yugoslavia and then at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay, India. While there, Gabor´ Szego˝ invited him for a one year visiting position at Stanford University, arriving in the United States in 1959. From Stanford he moved to the University of Notre Dame. When his chairman, Arnold Ross moved from Notre Dame to Ohio State University, Ranko came with him and joined the Department of Mathematics at Ohio State as Associate Professor in 1963. He was promoted to Professor in 1966 and remained there until his retirement in 1995. Ranko’s true passions were research and teaching, with his research focus in classical approximation theory. He was full of ideas, which he liked to share. In the 1970s and 1980s, his office often became a gathering place for students, colleagues, and visitors alikewhere exciting mathematical ideas in analysis were discussed, and problems were solved.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 23, 2018 University City High School Students to Attend Prestigious Lecture Saint Louis Science Center Hosts American Mathematical Society’s Arnold Ross Lecture University City, MO – More than a dozen University City High School students will attend the American Mathematical Society’s (AMS) 2018 Arnold Ross Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 24 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Saint Louis Science Center. The guest lecturer, Tadashi Tokieda of Stanford University, will present on the topic: “A World from a Sheet of Paper.” Professor Tokieda will explore a diversity of phenomenon, from magic tricks to geometry and elasticity, and the traditional Japanese art of origami. In addition, UCHS student Dominic Torno has been selected as a contestant for the game “Who Wants to Be a Mathematician,” which will take place following the lecture at 11:15 a.m. “Who Wants to Be a Mathematician” is a game in which high school students compete for cash and prizes by answering multiple choice mathematics questions from pre-calculus mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, combinatorics, and probability. The top prize is $3,000. The lecture and game are for talented mathematics students in the eleventh and twelfth grades. University City High School will be one of only seven schools represented at the lecture. “I am excited for our students to participate in this prestigious learning opportunity,” said Michael Peoples, principal of University City High School. “This demonstrates how our students continue to excel in academics, both inside and outside the classroom setting.” According to the AMS, the annual Arnold Ross Lecture is intended to stimulate interest in mathematics beyond the traditional classroom and to demonstrate the tremendous opportunities for careers in mathematics as teachers and as researchers in government, industry, and university programs.

    PROMYS for TEACHERS Learning in the Spirit of Exploration Glenn Stevens PROMYS for TEACHERS is a collaboration of Boston University's Department of Mathematics with the Education Development Center in Newton, Massachusetts. Together we are working to promote what we call a "culture of exploration" in high school mathematics classrooms. Our experience proves that the joys of exploration and discovery can be experienced by high school students and teachers in ways that are not all that different from what a seasoned mathematics researcher experiences. Moreover, teachers who have such experiences in their backgrounds are better prepared to encourage independent inquiry among their own students. Reports from former PROMYS teachers confirm that all students benefit from this kind of instruction, not just the most talented ones. History of PROMYS. The Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) has existed for over a decade at Boston University as a program that engages mathematically inclined high school students in the process of mathematical exploration through their work on unusually challenging problems in number theory. Since 1991, PROMYS has also worked with pre-service high school mathematics teachers from the Boston University School of Education. Beginning in the summer of 1999, PROMYS expanded its activities again by engaging in-service Massachusetts high school mathematics teachers in the program's summer activities and running five professional development seminars at the Education Development Center (EDC) during the academic year. PROMYS has its roots in the famous Ross Young Scholars Program, which is still running strongly at the Ohio State University in Columbus forty four years after its beginnings at Notre Dame in 1957.
