Just beyond, the retired World War Il aircnaft carrier, Intrepid, houses the Air and Space Museum. From this area ferry services Iink Manhattan with New Jersey in minutes, while fleets of excursion craft stand by for sightseeing trips and dinner cruises around the island, or for day-long trips up the Hudson. Across the Hudson the New Jersey landscape stretches out past Newark lnternational Airport to the gently rolling hills of the Ramapo Mountains and beyond to the resort and vacation playgrounds of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, South To the south the City takes on a Iess lofty character, where many of its historical buildings are dwarfed by the soaring Wall Street structures. Visible in the center foreground is the appropriately- named Flatiron Building, and south from there the elegant Woolworth Building, once the tallest building in the world at only 60 floors. To the right in Upper New York Bay stands the Great Lady herself, the Statue of Liberty, and the adjoining EIIis Island, where millions of immigrants first stood on American soil. To the lower left, the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges appear as miniatures against the backdrop of the majestic span of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge joining the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten lsland. Complexity in Building Design
Complexity in building design Mahadev Rahman, Princeton University and Columbia University; Board of Directors, Arup Group, USA At the present moment, the complexity of building design seems best exemplified by the super structures towering over modern Dubai. But how did we get from the iconic stone buildings of ancient times to these glass and steel monoliths that stand up to 160 floors high? As the tools available to designers have become ever more sophisticated and the environmental performance standards ever more stringent, there seems to be an inevitable drive toward complexity in the design of buildings. Technological advances have also added additional stages to the construction process and in an industry where time is money; this can produce innumerable challenges for a design team. Yet as we’ll see, the new tools are actually optimizing the efficiency of the design process. 1 Historical Context Of course, historically, the construction of traditional, or vernacular, buildings was not simple either. But typically much of the risk associated with the process could be mitigated by the repetitive nature of these buildings, and the incremental way in which innovations in technology or process were incorporated. At a larger scale, the construction of the pyramids at Giza, the Parthenon, the Coliseum, the Sun Temple at Konark, the cathedral at Chartres, the Taj Mahal would all have been spectacularly complex processes, even by modern standards. However, even with these examples, each building represented the ultimate refinement of an architectural style, technology, and construction process perfected over many generations. Risk was managed by ensuring that the next building would essentially be the same as the last one with only minor innovations in technology and construction methodology (Figure 1). -

The importance of modern architecture in meeting a child1s psychological as well as physical needs will be shown in an exhibition Modern Architecture for the Modern School which opens to the public Wednesday, September 16, at the Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street. The exhibition has been designed by Elizabeth Mock for the Department of Circulating Exhibitions, which will send it on a tour of schools, colleges and museums throughout the country after it closes at the Museum of Modern Art on October 18, The exhibition consists of 40 enlargements of the best modern schools for the elementary grades, a scale model, and 30 panels with drawings, photographs and explanatory labels which contrast the old and the new methods of elementary education and show the contribution modern architecture can make to modern education. Examples of good modern design are shown not only in schoolhouses of the United States but in those of Brazil, England, France, Sweden and Switzerland. A few non-elementary schools are shown, which present different problems but similar principles of design. Solutions of the problems of school-building brought about by priorities in materials and stoppage of non-essential construction are also considered. Mrs. Mock, designer of the exhibition, comments on its purpose as follows: "Educators today are very much concernod with child psychology, but they often forget that the child's sense of unity and security, his appreciation of honesty and beauty, are affected by his school surroundings as well as by his school activities. -

On September 23, 1975, the Landmarks Preservation Cor.~ission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Land~ark of the Lescnze House and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.2). 1be hearing was continued to November 25, 1975 (Item No. 1). B'oth hearings had been duly ~vertised in accordance with the provisior.s of law. A total of three Wltnesses spoke in favor of designation at the two hearings. ~~ry Lescaze, owner of the house, has given her approval of the designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Lescaze House of 1933-34, desi~ed by William Lescaze for his own use as a co~bined residence and architectural office, is an ernbodiDent of the theory and practice of one of the most influential exponents of modern archi tecture in the United States. His go~l -- the creation of an architecture expressive of the spirit and life of the 20th century and of each client•s' indi vidual roquirements -- is fully r~aiizcd in this house by an ha~onious - design of deceptive siEplicity, dete~ined by a rational, functional plan, and developed through the use of the newest available technology, materials and Ee~ods of co~struction. The sudden appearance on East 48th Street of this startlingly "raodern" facade of 1934, set between deteriorating brownstones of the post-Civil War period, had a drama. -

Over the decades since its opening in 1976, Denys Lasdun’s building, listed Grade II* in 1994. has come to be seen as a London landmark, and a favourite of theatre-goers. The building has served the NT company well. The innovations of its founders and architect – the ampleness of the foyers, the idea that theatre doesn’t start or finish with the rise and fall of the curtain – have been triumphantly borne out. With its Southbank neighbours to the west of Waterloo Bridge, the NT was an early inhabitant of an area that, thirty years later, has become one of the world’s major cultural quarters. The river walk from the Eye to the Design Museum now teems with life - and, as they pass the National, we do our best to encourage them in. The Travelex £10 seasons and now Sunday opening bear out the theatre’s 1976 slogan, “The New National Theatre is Yours”. Greatly helped by the Arts Council, the NT has looked after the building, with a major refurbishment in the nineties, and a yearly spend of some £2million on fabric, infrastructure and equipment.
