    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Troubled Category of Rural Bachelors in Contemporary South Korea A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures by Hannah Saeyoung Lim 2015 © Copyright by Hannah Saeyoung Lim 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Troubled Category of Rural Bachelors in Contemporary Korean Society by Hannah Saeyoung Lim Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Namhee Lee, Chair This dissertation takes the rural bachelor as a social category through whom to analyze the dialectic relationship between the rural community and state-led industrialization policies in reconfiguring the landscape of contemporary Korean society. This project is the first to examine this figure from an academic perspective and historicizes the surge of cross-border marriages between Korean men and non-Korean women in recent decades. Previous scholarship on contemporary Korea generally focuses on urbanites, industrial laborers, and issues of femininity and women’s experiences. While this scholarship tends to overlook the role of the countryside in the nation’s rapid post-1960 socio-economic transformation, this dissertation redresses this issue by focusing on the masculine subjectivity of rural bachelors as an avenue for analyzing how uneven economic development hit particularly hard in rural Korea. Through discursive analysis of post-1960s films, television programs, and newspaper articles about the countryside, this project demonstrates how public anxiety over rural bachelors and their marriage woes refracts distress over how to preserve the national “heartland” in the global turn to neoliberalism.

    religions Article Expansion of Religious Pluralism in Korean Civil Society: A Case Study of Conscientious Objection in South Korea Kwang Suk Yoo Sociology, Kyung Hee University, Seoul 02447, Korea; [email protected] Received: 15 September 2018; Accepted: 22 October 2018; Published: 24 October 2018 Abstract: This paper analyzes a socio-cultural adaptation of the concept of religious pluralism, focusing on the matter of conscientious objection in Korean pluralistic situation. The issue of conscientious objection in Korea has extended from a religious and philosophical field to a political, diplomatic, and international problem, being influenced heavily by IRFR and UNHRC. Regardless of their numerical marginality, its social implication is revealed more clearly in recent decisions of local or higher courts and triggers another significant public discourse on how Korean civil society should expand a concept of pluralism to integrate them. The paper concludes that the concept of pluralism advances into an operational principle to prop up the civil society of Korea beyond the narrow concept of religious pluralism. Introduction Conscientious objection based on religious belief makes the most significant discourse of how religious pluralism has been evolved in Korean public sphere. Especially the International Religious Freedom Reports (IRFR) issued by the U.S. government since 1999 has touched the imprisonment of conscientious objectors in Korea (IRFR 1998–2017), which caused both religious majority and minority to be engaged in the public discourse. The U.N. Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) has recommended Korean government introduce an alternative service for conscientious objectors many times since 1984.

We strive to acquire and research forefront intelligence and technologies for the academic development of biotechnology in order to contribute to the human welfare and regional development while keeping pace with the developing industrial and IT society. The Graduate School of Biotechnology has been supported by the Ministry of Education as a recipient of the Brain Korea 21 program. It was first established in the Spring Semester of 2000 as an independent research institute, focusing primarily on plant, animal, and food biotechnology, to meet the growing demands of modern society and to be in the forefront of life science in the 21st century. Currently, a team of 22 professors, about 100 graduate students and 10 post-doctoral research fellows in the fields of Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Functional Genomics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Plant Molecular Biology, Natural Product Chemistry, Oriental Medicinal Chemistry and Food Biotechnology are involved in research. Degree Requirements •The minimum course credits for the doctoral program, excluding thesis guidance credits, are 36. For the master’s degree, the minimum course credits are 24, excluding thesis guidance credits. •In order to submit a graduate dissertation, the applicant must pass a foreign language test and a qualifying examination.
