Three campuses actually constitute 18⁄ J.D. Program the University: the tree-lined 245-acre Seoul Campus, the 510- acre Global Campus situated along the shores of beautiful Singal Lake in Suwon, and the 12-acre Kwangnung Campus nestled in a 22⁄ LL.M./J.S.D. Program serene environment to the north of Seoul. Our forward-looking curriculum includes contemporary areas of interest, such as intellectual property law, economic law and environmental law. The economic realities of globalization require that KHLS graduates be well prepared for the complex legal relationships involved in diverse foreign legal cultures. As a result of the World Trade Organization’s liberalization of international trade, law firms and business organizations have placed a higher demand than ever before on experts on international legal affairs. To better prepare for the internationalization of legal practice, KHLS has committed substantial resources to the study of international and comparative law. Students may take various courses in transnational and global legal studies focusing on business law. Students interested in international cross-border issues may apply for the Graduate School of International Legal Affairs at Seoul campus. In addition to its regular curriculum, KHLS offers a variety of special opportunities including participation in moot court, observation tours to courts, mock bar examinations and group study during semester breaks. KHLS ultimately prepares students, upon completion of a master’s degree, for doctoral law programs, the bar examination, the higher civil service examination and various careers in the legal profession. Conflict and anxiety abound in every part of the world, and their mechanisms are intrinsic to modern life. Indeed, modernity appears to cast a wide and deep shadow, and it is because of this that a new form of universality capable of embracing diversity is now needed more than ever. The Global Academy for Neo-Renaissance of Kyung Hee University will hold ‘the 2006 Peace Bar Festival’ in celebration of the 25th UN International Day of Peace.     UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Troubled Category of Rural Bachelors in Contemporary South Korea A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures by Hannah Saeyoung Lim 2015 © Copyright by Hannah Saeyoung Lim 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Troubled Category of Rural Bachelors in Contemporary Korean Society by Hannah Saeyoung Lim Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Namhee Lee, Chair This dissertation takes the rural bachelor as a social category through whom to analyze the dialectic relationship between the rural community and state-led industrialization policies in reconfiguring the landscape of contemporary Korean society. This project is the first to examine this figure from an academic perspective and historicizes the surge of cross-border marriages between Korean men and non-Korean women in recent decades. Previous scholarship on contemporary Korea generally focuses on urbanites, industrial laborers, and issues of femininity and women’s experiences. While this scholarship tends to overlook the role of the countryside in the nation’s rapid post-1960 socio-economic transformation, this dissertation redresses this issue by focusing on the masculine subjectivity of rural bachelors as an avenue for analyzing how uneven economic development hit particularly hard in rural Korea. Through discursive analysis of post-1960s films, television programs, and newspaper articles about the countryside, this project demonstrates how public anxiety over rural bachelors and their marriage woes refracts distress over how to preserve the national “heartland” in the global turn to neoliberalism.

The issue of conscientious objection in Korea has extended from a religious and philosophical field to a political, diplomatic, and international problem, being influenced heavily by IRFR and UNHRC. Regardless of their numerical marginality, its social implication is revealed more clearly in recent decisions of local or higher courts and triggers another significant public discourse on how Korean civil society should expand a concept of pluralism to integrate them. The paper concludes that the concept of pluralism advances into an operational principle to prop up the civil society of Korea beyond the narrow concept of religious pluralism. Introduction Conscientious objection based on religious belief makes the most significant discourse of how religious pluralism has been evolved in Korean public sphere. Especially the International Religious Freedom Reports (IRFR) issued by the U.S. government since 1999 has touched the imprisonment of conscientious objectors in Korea (IRFR 1998–2017), which caused both religious majority and minority to be engaged in the public discourse. The U.N. Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) has recommended Korean government introduce an alternative service for conscientious objectors many times since 1984.
