[email protected] ABSTRACT This paper aims to reflect on the future of a region that is currently underused in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will receive Bus Rapid Transit. These are districts situated in the northern zone of the metropolitan area, bordering the major highway artery known as Avenida Brasil. This region is rich in history and infrastructure, but lacking in retrofitting and maintenance. This study’s point of view is taken from the intersection of the fields of architecture, urban planning and public transport. It shows the potential, the opportunities and the challenges presented by this region and it could serve as an example for other studies of the urban regeneration of degraded and underused areas.
