World Rural Observations 2017;9(2) http://www.sciencepub.net/rural Invulnerability in Shahnameh and the Song of the Nibelungen Mehrnoush Mehrabi [email protected] Abstract: This paper is concerned with the theme of invulnerability in Iranian and German mythology, especially in two remarkable works of literature, Shahnameh and the Song of the Nibelungen. Myths and legends are in fact the beliefs and ventures of different nations in previous ages. Legends deal with subjects such as gods, the creation of the world and the mankind, and so on. The theme of invulnerability is a major one amongst legends. This paper tries to discuss the similarities and differences of this theme in two aforesaid immortal epics. Jami and Nava’i/Fani’s Rewritings of Hafez’s Opening Ghazal Marc Toutant (CNRS Paris) He was the unique of the age (nadera-ye zaman) and a prodigy of the world (o‘juba-ye jahan). These are the first words with which Dowlatshah Samarqandi begins the notice he devotes to Hafez in his Tazkerat al-sho‘ara in 1486. Then he adds: ‘His excellence (fazilat) and his perfection (kamal) are endless and the art of poetry is unworthy of his rank. He is incomparable in the science of Qur’an and he is illustrious in the sciences of the exoteric (zaher) and the esoteric (baten).’1 Although Hafez died in 1389, his poetry was widely celebrated one century later, as shown by Dowlatshah’s eulogy. -

Four novelists who fit certain criteria were selected: (a) they have invented, designed, and produced creative work regularly and their work has influenced Turkish literature; (b) they were Turkish citizens who have lived 75% of their lives in Turkey and received their education in Turkey; and (c) they varied in age and gender. -

Ph: 471-8798, [email protected] Course Description: No novel is created in a vacuum—every writer takes a network of influences from other writers, their own history, personal life, tastes, the political climate in which they write, etc., and shapes these elements into their final product. This course proposes to examine a single novel through the multiplicity of artistic and cultural elements that have been instrumental in the composition of the novel, and will be instrumental in the reader’s appreciation of this novel. The Nobel prize winner Orhan Pahmuk’s 1998 novel My Name is Red is a work through which a reader gains a greater understanding of a great many cultural treasures of the Persian World and the Ottoman Empire. Among the visual and literary text we will examine in the course are: • Miniaturist painting (mostly as used for manuscript illustrations). • The “workshop” system of this type of painting. • The epic Shahnama, especially the tragic story of Sohrab and Rostum. • The Story of Layla and Majun, by the Persian poet Nizami. • The career of Pahmuk, with his influences from three continents and the censorship rules he must endure. The novel opens up an antique and Islamic world, but is written with modern styles and themes. It is at its foundation a mystery novel, a sophisticated and elaborate who-done-it. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract During the first half of the twentieth century, the ethnically segmented Ottoman empire was transformed into a nation state of Turkish citizens. This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts. -
