    1 German global soft power, 1700-1920 Nicola McLelland [email protected] Abstract: This article provides the first overview of the reach and ‘soft power’ of German language and culture in Europe and beyond, from 1700 to 1920, shortly after the end of the First World War. Besides the role of the state (weak, until deliberate policies began to be formulated from the late nineteenth century), the article shows the role of language societies, religious, educational and scientific institutions, and other sociocultural and political factors, including migration and colonization, in promoting German ‘soft power’ in other parts of Europe, in the Americas, Africa and China. The changing status of German language and culture in these parts of the world and the extent of local and ‘home’ support, through explicit policy or otherwise, for German as a first, foreign or additional language abroad is also considered. Keywords: German as a foreign language (GFL), German colonialism, German migration, Philanthropists, language societies, Togo, Namibia, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Jiaozhou Bay concession (Kiautschou). In 2013, Monocle magazine ranked Germany top in its global soft-power index, beating the USA (2nd) and the UK (3rd).1 With about 100 million native speakers (sixth behind Chinese, English, Hindustani, Spanish, and Russian), German also has some claim to be a world language. Its advocates point to its global reach; a map titled Weltsprache Deutsch ‘World Language German’ in a recent textbook for English learners of German suggests that German is spoken in Europe, Africa, Australia, North and South America, and Asia2. A series of high-profile publications reflect concern about German’s status on the world stage: Thierfelder’s Die Deutsche Sprache im Ausland (‘The German language abroad’, 1957), Ammon’s comprehensive Die Stellung der deutschen Sprache in der Welt (‘The status of the German language in the World’, 2014, updating his earlier Die internationale Stellung de 1 Germany lost the top spot to the USA in 2014, however.

It is also the only channel for the transportation of materials from the Yellow River to the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The supply of suspended sediment from the Bohai Sea plays a decisive role in the evolution of the mud area in the northern Yellow Sea and even the muddy area in the southern Yellow Sea. Previous studies have demonstrated that sediment exchange through the Bohai Strait occurs mainly in winter, but due to the lack of long-term observational data, changes in the sediment flux over multiple years have not been studied. In this paper, based on L1B data from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) -Aqua satellite, an interannual time series of the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) at each depth layers in the Bohai Strait in winter was established through 16 cruises that benefited from the complete vertical mixing water in the strait in winter.

This study analyzed the industrialization development of Shandong peninsula city group and every city with the method of AHP. The conclusion indicted that the industrialization stage of Shandong peninsula city group is the advanced stage of industrial implementation phase, while the industrialization stage of Shandong province is the primary stage of industrial implementation phase. Jinan and Qingdao have been after industrialization stage, while Zibo, Dongying, Yantai and Weihai have been the advanced stage of industrial implementation phase, and Weifang and Rizhao have been the primary stage of industrial implementation phase. 1 INTRODUCTION Industrialization is defined to be a process that with the continuous development of modern industry, especially the development of manufacturing, the proportion of industrial value accounted for gross domestic product (GDP) keep increasing, and the industry have developed to be the pillar of the economy. J.T.Hu general secretary of the study of Shandong in Shandong for the future of social and economic development to make a clear strategic positioning. It has brought a new opportunity for the economic development of Shandong Peninsula. Material to a core concentration is the basic phenomenon of the development of things. The objective existence of agglomeration in spatial economic activities, Moderate concentration can produce spatial agglomeration effect[1].The agglomeration of factors and economic activities in the regional space is the fundamental cause of the regional production, fundamental driving force for regional development.
