Surabaya Old Town New Life: Reconstructing the Historic City Through Urban Artefacts
The Sustainable City XII 389 SURABAYA OLD TOWN NEW LIFE: RECONSTRUCTING THE HISTORIC CITY THROUGH URBAN ARTEFACTS PUTERI MAYANG BAHJAH ZAHARIN & NOOR IZZATI MOHD RAWI Centre of Studies for Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia ABSTRACT Architecture portrays the physical and visible image of a place. From these images, its meanings represent the transformation and development of a city over time. Architecture is continuously remodelled to adapt to the development and modernisation that a city and its society experience. The Old Town of Surabaya is well known for its cultural diversity with its distinctive six main district settlements along the Kalimas River namely the Arabic, Chinese, Javanese, Dutch, Industrial area and Business and Service area. In line with the government efforts to revitalise the old town, the architecture of this part of the city needs to be remodelled and altered to realize the government’s vision and to revive the identity of this district. For example, the warehouse, which is an urban artefact and one of the most significant typology built along the Kalimas River during the era of Surabaya as an entrepot, is now neglected and portrayed a derelict image to the old town’s identity and memory. This paper intends to explore how architecture expresses the identity and memory of the city of the Old Town of Surabaya. By investigating the experience in the old town, the typology of the town is defined and urban artefacts are identified. Then, the warehouse, which is one of the urban artefacts in the old town, is discussed in terms of its transformation, typology, memory, and how its existence can define the identity and memory of the old town. -
Nīshāpūrī Scholars in the Formation of Sunnī Scholarship in the Eleventh Century
Al-Jāmi‘ah: Journal of Islamic Studies - ISSN: 0126-012X (p); 2356-0912 (e) Vol. 55, no. 2 (2017), pp.427-462, doi: 10.14421/ajis.2017.552.427-462 NĪSHĀPŪRĪ SCHOLARS IN THE FORMATION OF SUNNĪ SCHOLARSHIP IN THE ELEVENTH CENTURY Mohammad Syifa Amin Widigdo Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta, Indonesia email: [email protected] Abstract The role of Nīshāpūrī medieval scholars in the tenth-eleventh century in the formation of Sunnī orthodoxy has been rarely discussed. The existing scholarship focuses primarily on the local history of Nīshāpūr and other parts of eastern Muslim world or emphasizes more on the contribution of Baghdādī scholars in the light of the formation of Sunnī legal schools, which in turn is deemed as Sunnī orthodoxy, than their counterpart in Nīshāpūr and other cities in the east. Therefore, this paper attempts to show how Muslim scholars from Nīshāpūr contributed to the advancement of Sunnī scholarship in the fifth/eleventh century through a closer study of intellectual strategies developed and employed by Nīshāpūrī scholars to cope with their local challenges. They built intellectual networking and attempted to integrate legal and theological scholarship in Islamic scholarship to deal with their local problems, which interestingly shaped their distinctive contribution in the light of Sunnī scholarship tradition. By means of this attempt of intellectual networking and harmonizing legal scholarship (fiqh) and theological scholarship (kalām), they were not only able to tackle local problems but also equipped with intellectual means to push doctrinal boundaries within Sunnī scholarship in the fifth/ eleventh century. [Peran ilmuwan Nīshāpūr abad pertengahan dalam pembentukan ortodoksi Sunni di abad 10 – 11 masehi masih jarang dibahas. -

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research (ASSEHR), volume 279 Third International Conference of Arts, Language and Culture (ICALC 2018) Spiritual Logic as Culture and Political Expression in Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma’s Ruling Aris Aryanto 1, Bani Sudardi 2*, Andrik Purwasito3, Wakit Abdullah Rais3 1 Doctorate Program in Cultural Studies of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 2,3Postgraduate of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 1 [email protected], 2* [email protected], 3 [email protected], [email protected] Abstract: This study aims to describe the role of spiritual logic during the reign of Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma from the Javanese community mentality’s viewpoint recorded in the book of Babad Tanah Jawi (BTJ). BTJ recounts the genealogy of Javanese kings until the reign of Pakubuwana II in Kartasura. BTJ in this episode expresses the steps of Sultan Agung to knit the continuity of the power of the Mataram dynasty in controlling Java and Madura. The political steps taken by Sultan Agung in legitimizing power were trusted by the people as an attitude that was directly inspired by God. The speech story recorded in the BTJ within the limits of this study contains three important motives, namely (1) spiritual motives, (2) political, and (3) power. Information in the BTJ should be seen as a Javanese perspective in interpreting its world and king's greatness, not as a historical turn. Keyword: spiritual logic, Mataram dynasty, knowledge motive, political motive, power Motive Introduction Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma ruled in Mataram from 1613-1645. Sultan Agung was recorded in the genealogy of the Mataram kings as the third generation ruler after Panembahan Senapati and Susuhunan Krapyak. -

Sulayman’s work is the oldest surviving exegesis which comments on the entire Qur’an from the beginning to the end. Ana- lytical comparisons between different manuscripts of this exegesis and the quotations made by the exegetes, who greatly benefited from Muqatil, give us important information about the history of Quranic exegesis. al-Tha¨labi’s references to Muqatil offer valuable data illumi- nating the role of ‘the changing contents’ of the manuscripts in un- derstanding the history of the exegesis. Changing evaluations and criticism about Muqatil’s personality and his opinions show that the history of Quranic exegesis needs to be further critically studied. Introduction Muqatil b. Sulayman’s exegesis has been studied by modern scholars to enable them to elaborate on the history of early exegetical activi- ties. The investigation of the transmissions of Muqatil in al-Tha¨labi’s recently published exegesis, al-Kashf wa al-bayan ¨an tafsir al-Qur’an1 has also contributed to the elucidation of the early development of exegesis and to the understanding of its nature in the following peri- * My thanks are due to Associate Professor Ismail Albayrak (Faculty of Divin- ity/Sakarya University) for comments and for correcting the English text of my ar- ticle. -
The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan
The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 George Fiske All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske This study examines the socioeconomics of state formation in medieval Afghanistan in historical and historiographic terms. It outlines the thousand year history of Ghaznavid historiography by treating primary and secondary sources as a continuum of perspectives, demonstrating the persistent problems of dynastic and political thinking across periods and cultures. It conceptualizes the geography of Ghaznavid origins by framing their rise within specific landscapes and histories of state formation, favoring time over space as much as possible and reintegrating their experience with the general histories of Iran, Central Asia, and India. Once the grand narrative is illustrated, the scope narrows to the dual process of monetization and urbanization in Samanid territory in order to approach Ghaznavid obstacles to state formation. The socioeconomic narrative then shifts to political and military specifics to demythologize the rise of the Ghaznavids in terms of the framing contexts described in the previous chapters. Finally, the study specifies the exact combination of culture and history which the Ghaznavids exemplified to show their particular and universal character and suggest future paths for research. Majapahit no.62, Mataram, Indonesia 2Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Syiah Kuala University, Jl. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Hasan, Gampong Pie, Banda Aceh, Indonesia Abstract. The past earthquake records in North Lombok show the high level of earthquake hazard in this area. The maximum magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 Mw on May 30th, 1979. But, there were no tsunami events records due to those earthquakes. Nevertheless, this area is very close to Mataram City (province capital city) and tourism area. Therefore, the assessment of tsunami hazard is very important. The tsunami simulation was conducted by using COMCOT Model, which is based on the North Lombok Earthquake as the initial condition. The simulation result shows the prediction of tsunami travel time is about 18 ~ 20 minutes from the source location to Mataram City. The height of the tsunami wave is 0.13 ~ 0.20 meters due to the earthquake magnitude is about 6 Mw. 1 Introduction Mataram City has recorded 459,314 persons in 2016 and the population growth was about 2.02% [4]. The average The Lombok Island is located exactly on the east side of population density of Mataram City was 7,493 persons Bali Island. This island and Sumbawa Island are part of per square kilometer.
