Surabaya Old Town New Life: Reconstructing the Historic City Through Urban Artefacts
The Sustainable City XII 389 SURABAYA OLD TOWN NEW LIFE: RECONSTRUCTING THE HISTORIC CITY THROUGH URBAN ARTEFACTS PUTERI MAYANG BAHJAH ZAHARIN & NOOR IZZATI MOHD RAWI Centre of Studies for Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia ABSTRACT Architecture portrays the physical and visible image of a place. From these images, its meanings represent the transformation and development of a city over time. Architecture is continuously remodelled to adapt to the development and modernisation that a city and its society experience. The Old Town of Surabaya is well known for its cultural diversity with its distinctive six main district settlements along the Kalimas River namely the Arabic, Chinese, Javanese, Dutch, Industrial area and Business and Service area. In line with the government efforts to revitalise the old town, the architecture of this part of the city needs to be remodelled and altered to realize the government’s vision and to revive the identity of this district. For example, the warehouse, which is an urban artefact and one of the most significant typology built along the Kalimas River during the era of Surabaya as an entrepot, is now neglected and portrayed a derelict image to the old town’s identity and memory. This paper intends to explore how architecture expresses the identity and memory of the city of the Old Town of Surabaya. By investigating the experience in the old town, the typology of the town is defined and urban artefacts are identified. Then, the warehouse, which is one of the urban artefacts in the old town, is discussed in terms of its transformation, typology, memory, and how its existence can define the identity and memory of the old town. -
Birds of Gunung Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia: Effects of Altitude, the 1815 Cataclysmic Volcanic Eruption and Trade
FORKTAIL 18 (2002): 49–61 Birds of Gunung Tambora, Sumbawa, Indonesia: effects of altitude, the 1815 cataclysmic volcanic eruption and trade COLIN R. TRAINOR In June-July 2000, a 10-day avifaunal survey on Gunung Tambora (2,850 m, site of the greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history), revealed an extraordinary mountain with a rather ordinary Sumbawan avifauna: low in total species number, with all species except two oriental montane specialists (Sunda Bush Warbler Cettia vulcania and Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys) occurring widely elsewhere on Sumbawa. Only 11 of 19 restricted-range bird species known for Sumbawa were recorded, with several exceptional absences speculated to result from the eruption. These included: Flores Green Pigeon Treron floris, Russet-capped Tesia Tesia everetti, Bare-throated Whistler Pachycephala nudigula, Flame-breasted Sunbird Nectarinia solaris, Yellow-browed White- eye Lophozosterops superciliaris and Scaly-crowned Honeyeater Lichmera lombokia. All 11 resticted- range species occurred at 1,200-1,600 m, and ten were found above 1,600 m, highlighting the conservation significance of hill and montane habitat. Populations of the Yellow-crested Cockatoo Cacatua sulphurea, Hill Myna Gracula religiosa, Chestnut-backed Thrush Zoothera dohertyi and Chestnut-capped Thrush Zoothera interpres have been greatly reduced by bird trade and hunting in the Tambora Important Bird Area, as has occurred through much of Nusa Tenggara. ‘in its fury, the eruption spared, of the inhabitants, not a although in other places some vegetation had re- single person, of the fauna, not a worm, of the flora, not a established (Vetter 1820 quoted in de Jong Boers 1995). blade of grass’ Francis (1831) in de Jong Boers (1995), Nine years after the eruption the former kingdoms of referring to the 1815 Tambora eruption. -

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research (ASSEHR), volume 279 Third International Conference of Arts, Language and Culture (ICALC 2018) Spiritual Logic as Culture and Political Expression in Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma’s Ruling Aris Aryanto 1, Bani Sudardi 2*, Andrik Purwasito3, Wakit Abdullah Rais3 1 Doctorate Program in Cultural Studies of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 2,3Postgraduate of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 1 [email protected], 2* [email protected], 3 [email protected], [email protected] Abstract: This study aims to describe the role of spiritual logic during the reign of Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma from the Javanese community mentality’s viewpoint recorded in the book of Babad Tanah Jawi (BTJ). BTJ recounts the genealogy of Javanese kings until the reign of Pakubuwana II in Kartasura. BTJ in this episode expresses the steps of Sultan Agung to knit the continuity of the power of the Mataram dynasty in controlling Java and Madura. The political steps taken by Sultan Agung in legitimizing power were trusted by the people as an attitude that was directly inspired by God. The speech story recorded in the BTJ within the limits of this study contains three important motives, namely (1) spiritual motives, (2) political, and (3) power. Information in the BTJ should be seen as a Javanese perspective in interpreting its world and king's greatness, not as a historical turn. Keyword: spiritual logic, Mataram dynasty, knowledge motive, political motive, power Motive Introduction Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma ruled in Mataram from 1613-1645. Sultan Agung was recorded in the genealogy of the Mataram kings as the third generation ruler after Panembahan Senapati and Susuhunan Krapyak. -

Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh tells a story of layered exiles and displacement, revealing hidden narratives of violence and grief while exposing struggles over gendered expectations of being good and respectable women and men. It brings to light the multiple ways of arranging lives and forming caring relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home, and offers insights into the relations of power and violence that are embedded in the peace. Marjaana Jauhola is senior lecturer and head of discipline of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research focuses on co-creative research methodologies, urban and visual ethnography with an eye on feminisms, as well as global politics of conflict and disaster recovery in South and Southeast Asia. -
