The Western Mass Pioneers Soccer Club was founded in 1997 and entered into USL D-3 league action for the 1998 season. The founders of the club wanted to take advantage of the sport’s local popularity among the region’s youth, and leverage the national scale growth developed just after the 1994 World Cup held in the U.S. The formation of Major League Soccer gave the organization the kick start it needed! From the start, the Pioneers franchise has been a hit, gaining recognition as one of the top drawing clubs in the league. In just its second season, nearly 5,500 people watched the team win the National Championship over South Jersey at Ludlow’s Lusitano Stadium. Home games, which are normally scheduled on weekends beginning in May, regularly draw 1,000 fans from all over the Pioneer Valley. Since its inception, the Pioneers club has not only enjoyed consistent success by earning home playo games at Lusitano Stadium, but it has also welcomed MLS teams like the Chicago Fire and New England Revolution to further increase the fan base. International clubs Sporting of Portugal, FC Chaves and the Brazilian All Stars have played exhibition matches at the stadium. Another huge bonus for your advertising dollar -- TV highlights of nearly every home game are broadcast on each of the local news channels. WHY DO FANS COME TO OUR GAMES? Along with being the only United Soccer League franchise in the Western Mass area that operates in the Spring and throughout the Summer, we are the best value around for families. Whether they are participating in half time activities, performing ball boy/girl duties, or getting autographs from the players – there is so much for them to enjoy. The great thing about the Pioneers is its insistence that players come directly from the Western Mass region and New England. Two thirds of our roster is home grown talent, while the remainder is made up of national and international players. Countries renowned for its soccer talent include Brazil, Argentina, and Germany. All have been represented on the Pioneers over the past 12 years! Players are selected by our veteran coaching sta after scheduled try outs are completed. We look at their talent and their resumes. Why? The club is seeking players that want to compete at the highest level in the very competitive minor leagues of soccer. The next level, MLS, is a goal all players hope to achieve. The MLS has players like Taylor Twellman, Brian McBride, Claudio Reyna and Clint Dempsey. These US National Team players have all performed in European Premier Leagues and the MLS. Many of these top-ranked players have performed here at the stadium. It’s not going unnoticed! Fox Sports has broadcast two of the team’s games nationally and local cable access will be showing games throughout the season. DEVELOP YOUR BRAND LIKE OTHER ELITE COMPANIES HAVE.     ESPN.com: Soccer [Print without images] Wednesday, August 31, 2011 Updated: September 7, 12:03 PM ET Soccer's concussion problem By Leander Schaerlaeckens ESPN.com Case study 1: Taylor Twellman Twellman got his first concussion in his college soccer debut as a freshman University of Maryland striker. Seton Hall's goalie charged out at a loose ball and rammed Twellman in the face, breaking his nose in three places. Two years later, while with 1860 Munich, he got another concussion when he knocked heads with a defender during an exhibition game. The third came during a U.S. national team practice in 2003, when defender Danny Califf elbowed him. Later that year, Twellman had Califf to thank for the fourth concussion, when he kicked Twellman in the face during a Major League Soccer game, breaking his orbital bone, nose and jaw. He had never had post-concussion symptoms before. But this time he spent the month after the incident with a severe headache, wooziness and nausea. He got his fifth concussion in 2005. In 2008, Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin hesitated too long on a cross against Twellman's New England Revolution and had to charge out on the double. He was late to the ball and instead punched Twellman in the face. He was concussed again. This time, he had every known concussive symptom: migraines, sensitivity to light, vertigo, nausea, impaired vision, fatigue, insomnia and memory loss. Heavily medicated, he played through eight more games, scoring five times. But he felt all wrong. "Doctors would tell me I had diabetes or that I had situational depression," Twellman said.

May 2018 Working Paper ABSTRACT The purpose of the presented research is to advance the superstar literature on the aspect of superstar’s characteristics and value. Typically, superstar research is faced with one problem: They apply the same criteria to determine who their superstars are as to describe them later because they lack “an objective measure of star quality” (Krueger, 2005, p.18). To avoid this complication, the author chose to study Major League Soccer’s (MLS) designated players as this setting present a unique, as discrete, assignment of star status. MLS has formally introduced stars in 2007 under the designated player (DP) rule which delivers over 100 star-observations in the last ten years to investigate MLS strategy of star employment. The insights from this data set demonstrate which characteristics are relevant, whether MLS stars can be categorized as Rosen or Adler stars, and what the MLS pays for and in this sense values most. A cluster analysis discovers a sub group of ten stars that stand out from the others, in this sense superstars. A two-stage regression model confirms the value stemming from popularity, leadership qualities, previous playing level, age and national team experience but refutes other typical performance indicators like games played and goals scored or position.
