The vertical distribution of genera is illustrated in a range chart. Sea angels feed exclusively on a small herbivorous sea snail, Limacina helicina. Carotenoids in C. limacina, P. doliiformis, and L. helicina were investigated for comparative biochemical points of view. β-Carotene, zeaxanthin, and diatoxanthin were found to be major carotenoids in L. helicina. L. helicina accumulated dietary algal carotenoids without modification. On the other hand, keto-carotenoids, such as pectenolone, 7,8-didehydroastaxanthin, and adonixanthin were identified as major carotenoids in the sea angels C. limacina and P. doliiformis. Sea angels oxidatively metabolize dietary carotenoids and accumulate them in their gonads. -

Nine samples from the Nollis Tunnel section near Tabaquite, from the Langhian (N8 Zone), yielded 12 species (three Pterotracheoidea, eight Pteropoda, one unidentified). From nine samples of the Brasso gorge section at Brasso Village, from the Serravallian (Zones N11-12), four species (all Pteropoda) were isolated, one of which was not represented in the Nollis Tunnel section. Most species could only be identified to genus level. A new genus in the Atlantidae,Chriskingia gen. nov., is introduced. The pterotracheid genus Firoloida Lesueur, 1817 is recorded for the first time from Miocene deposits. The pteropods Limacina valvatina (Reuss, 1867) and Creseis roesti Janssen, in Cahuzac & Janssen, 2010 represent new species for the American Miocene. The numerical occurrence of the species demonstrates considerable differences that are discussed in the context of the oxygen minimum zone occurring in these sections, as discussed by Wilson & McLean (in press). -

These mollusks, unlike most species in their phylum, live out their entire life cycles in an environment without solid substrates. Consequently, they have become adept at swimming or floating or attaching to drifting objects and, as members of the planktonic community, they have developed life styles quite different from those of their benthic relatives. Although these animals have been known and studied since the late sev enteenth century, much of the information has remained scattered in scien tific journals, expedition reports, or specialized monographs. Because this is particularly true of information relating to the biology and ecology of planktonic gastropods, the book concentrates on these topics. -

About 850 naturally occurring carotenoids had been reported up until 2018. Photosynthetic bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants can synthesize carotenoids de novo. Carotenoids are essential pigments in photosynthetic organs along with chlorophylls. Carotenoids also act as photo-protectors, antioxidants, color attractants, and precursors of plant hormones in non-photosynthetic organs of plants. Animals cannot synthesize carotenoids de novo, and so those found in animals are either directly accumulated from food or partly modifed through metabolic reactions. So, animal carotenoids show structural diversity. Carotenoids in animals play important roles such precursors of vitamin A, photo-protectors, anti- oxidants, enhancers of immunity, and contributors to reproduction. In the present review, I describe the structural diversity, function, biosyntheses, and metabolism of natural carotenoids. Here we present a ~300 ky record of holoplanktonic gastropods from two sites cored/drilled offshore of Montserrat during Inte- grated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 340. Oxygen isotope stratigraphy was used to produce a stratigraphic frame- work for each site, which was compared and correlated to the cor- responding downcore abundances of holoplanktonic gastropods. In addition, the record of previously cored Site CAR-MON 2, ~15 km southwest of IODP Site U1396, was compared to data at Sites U1395 and U1394 to identify species associations that are repro- ducible across the area. A number of downhole distributions were found to correlate significantly across the three sites, highlighting ten key species, three of which (Heliconoides inflatus, Creseis clava, and Atlanta plana) display significant relationships to multiple holoplanktonic gastropod species. -
