Sadri ©2009 Chadia Louai ii ABSTRACT The Clash of Civilization thesis by Samuel Huntington and the claims of other scholars such as Bernard Lewis reinforced the impression in the West that the Arab world is a homogeneous and rigid entity ready to clash with other civilizations. In fact, some in the West argue that world civilizations have religious characteristics, for that reason the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will be primarily cultural and religious. However, other scholars argue that there is no single Islamic culture but rather multiple types of political Islam and different perception of it. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2. ABSTRACT This thesis is a political study of the Umayyad Caliphate during the reign of f Abd a I -M a lik ibn Marwan, 6 5 -8 6 /6 8 4 -7 0 5 . The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it. -

Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness. -
Ameen Rihani: the English Manuscripts and Universalism
Ameen F. Rihani: The English Manuscripts and Universalism In 1998 the Albert Ferris Rihani family donated to the Library of Congress facsimiles of the manuscripts of all of the English works and correspondence of pioneer Arab-American author Ameen F. Rihani (1876- 1940). The originals of these documents remain in the family museum in Freike, Lebanon. Since most scholars could not travel there to conduct research, an exception was made in Library policy that allowed the acquisition of copies while originals are extant. In the 1998 negotiations, Ramzi Rihani represented the family for this Gift to the Nation. Ameen Rihani’s papers are important to the nation’s memory. He was the first American of Arab heritage to devote himself to writing literature, to publish a novel in English, and the first Arab author to write English essays, poetry, novels, short stories, art critiques and travel chronicles. He is now the author of 32 books in English, published from 1911 to 2002, his publishing life being extended already by 62 years due to the editorial efforts of the Rihani family. His writings in English mark the beginning of a body of literature that is Arab in its concern, culture and characteristic, English in language, and American in spirit and platform. He published in the United States during the first three decades of this century in many major magazines and newspapers. According to University of Pennsylvania Professor of Arabic Roger Allen, Rihani and his fellow Arab immigrants were leaders in "the literary movement that was so crucial to the life and development of certain communities in the United States (especially Brooklyn, Cincinnati and Detroit) and also to the development of cultural and literary ties to the Middle East region."1 Rihani is recognized as the founder of Arab-American literature and the forerunner of ethnic American literature written by popular Middle Eastern writers. -

Abstract Islam in Kanyakumari District has been enriched by Fakirs and saintly savants of Islam. Due to their selfless service, Islam has thrived in this part of the country. The spread and growth of Islam is conspicuous by the presence of 52 Jamaaths in this district. These Jamaaths speak of their antiquity and they contain a lot of information regarding their life style and culture. In Kanyakumari District there are 52 Jamaaths. Among them six Muslim Jamaaths are considered very large and prominent. They are, Thengapattanam Muslim Jamaath, Colachel Muslim Jamaath, Thiruvithancode Muslim Jamaath, Thuckalay Muslim Jamaath, Elankadai Muslim Jamaath at Kottar, Malik Dinar faithulmal Muslim Jamaath, Kottar, Thittuvilai Muslim Jamaath. Some other Jamaaths are steadily growing in strength, stature and popularity. September 1999 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the significance of Divine Love in the Islamic tradition with reference to Sufis who used the medium of Arabic to communicate their ideas. Divine Love means the mutual love between God and man. It is commonly accepted that the Sufis were the forerunners in writing about Divine Love. However, there is a relative paucity of literature regarding the details of their conceptions of Love. Therefore, this attempt can be considered as one of the first of its kind in this field. The first chapter will attempt to define the nature of love from various perspectives, such as, psychology, Islamic philosophy and theology. The roots of Divine Love in relation to human love will be explored in the context of the ideas that were prevalent amongst the Sufi authors regarded as authorities; for example, al-Qushayri, al-Hujwiri and al-Kalabadhi. The second chapter investigates the origins Of Sufism with a view to establishing the role that Divine Love played in this. The etymological derivations of the term Sufi will be referred to as well as some early Sufi writings. It is an undeniable fact that the Qur'an and tladith are the bedrocks of the Islamic religion, and all Muslims seek to justify their ideas with reference to them. -

UCLA Journal of Religion Volume 2 2018 Developing Tolerance and Conservatism: A Study of Ibadi Oman Connor D. Elliott The George Washington University ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the development of Omani-Ibadi society from pre- Islam to the present day. Oman represents an anomaly in the religious world because its Ibadi theology is conservative in nature while also preaching unwavering tolerance. To properly understand how Oman developed such a unique culture and religion, it is necessary to historically analyze the country by recounting the societal developments that occurred throughout the millennia. By doing so, one begins to understand that Oman did not achieve this peaceful religious theology over the past couple of decades. Oman has an exceptional society that was built out of longtime traditions like a trade-based economy that required foreign interaction, long periods of political sovereignty or autonomy, and a unique theology. The Omani-Ibadi people and their leaders have continuously embraced the ancient roots of their regional and religious traditions to create a contemporary state that espouses a unique society that leads people to live conservative personal lives while exuding outward tolerance. Brook. 1 INTRODUCTION: “If you wish to solve the problem of Afghanistan, read this report!” Dehors Debonneheure. The Jewish Khazar Kingdom, in alliance with Charlemagne (742-814) and Haroun Al-Rashid (763-809), was truly one of the most exciting anomalies in all of history: it was no less than a sort of American Experiment of the Middle Ages; that is to say, a model of religious tolerance based on the ecumenical principle of agape, with the explicit purpose of saving the despised, the wretched, the poor, and the unwanted of this world. It was from such a peace of faith experiment that Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa later conceived his own ecumenical movement for the Council of Florence, and planned his subsequent Columbus project. Thus, for the first time in history, three political and religious leaders, Charlemagne, the Khazarian King Bulan, and Haroun Al-Rashid embraced the common mission of developing a charitable form of economic development based on the ecumenical community of principle of the three religions of the Book. The problem that this ecumenical reality poses to a distant observer, such as you and me today, is how to understand such an ecumenical reality when most of the empirical evidence of its very existence has been destroyed and no longer exist? How can the truth of this historical anomaly be rediscovered without the presumptive burden of empirical proof? The problem is not to prove the existence of the Jewish Khazar Kingdom as such, but to prove that it was ecumenical in character.
