Literature JL Caw, William McTaggart, Glasgow 1917, p. 258 £5,000 - 7,000 P Kvaerne, William McTaggart, Edinburgh, 2007, plate 48 €5,600 - 7,800 US$6,100 - 8,500 Painted 1887-88, this watercolour relates to a much earlier oil which had been McTaggart’s first depiction of the important theme of emigration. The oil also alluded to the poem by Allan Ramsay Sr, said to have been inspired by a Jacobite fugitive after the uprising in 1715. It was engraved to illustrate a volume of Ramsay’s verse. 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY PICTURES | 9 14 14 * FRANCIS CAMPBELL BOILEAU CADELL RSA RSW (1883-1937) Provenance The Forge Private Collection, Canada oil on panel 45 x 37.5 cm. (17 11/16 x 14 9/16 in.) This fascinating picture, rediscovered in Canada, calls to mind Cadell’s unframed considerable direct involvement in the Great War effort. He served mostly with the 9th Battalion, The Royal Scots, 1915-18, generally on £8,000 - 12,000 the Front in France, and was able to produce some sketches while €8,900 - 13,000 in France or on leave. He was also involved in the care of German US$9,700 - 15,000 prisoners of war during the last weeks.
