Ho# Ujjfice JbiaeAt Haui: «m JL HE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS of many moons to this industry is the matter-of-fact announcement by Technicolor that it will put into effect a flat reduction of one cent a foot on release prints processed after August 1st. "There is a great industrial story of days and nights and months and years behind the manner in which Dr. Kalmus and his associates have boosted the quality and service of color to the industry, beaten down the price step by step, and maintained a great spirit of cooperation with production and exhibition. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION HERBERT T. KALMUS, President , 617 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, Subscription Rate, $10.00 Per ■Ml ^Ite. DIGEST ANNUAL *7lie. 1/ea>i WcM. D OMESTIC box office standings take on values in this year of vanished foreign markets that are tremendous in importance. They are the only ratings that mean anything to the producer, director, player, and exhibitor. Gone—at least for years to come—are the days when known box office failures in the American market could be pushed to fabulous income heights and foisted on the suffering American exhibitor because of a shadowy "for¬ eign value.” Gone are the days—and we hope forever—when producers could know¬ ingly, and with "malice aforethought,” set out on the production of top budgetted pictures that would admittedly have no appeal to American mass audiences, earn no dimes for American exhibitors. All because of that same shadowy foreign market. ^ ^ So THE DIGEST ANNUAL comes to you at an opportune time.

Through it, we intend to stress the influence his books and/or the films based on them had on many young generations who, under their shelter, chose a career in medicine. Prize-winning writer and PhD, in his works -formally adorned with his great talent for description and observation- he intermingles naturalism, conflicting passions, medical situations and social criticism. Beyond all discussion about his literary career and his repercussion on film, his influence on those who embraced Medicine following in the steps of his characters, many of whom were nothing more than a reflection of himself, is unquestionable. • Our County, Our Story; Portage County, Wisconsin
Our County Our Story PORTAGE COUNTY WISCONSIN BY Malcolm Rosholt Charles M. White Memorial Public LibrarJ PORTAGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STEVENS POINT, \VISCONSIN 1959 Copyright, 1959, by the PORTAGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AT WORZALLA PUBLISHING COMPANY STEVENS POINT, WISCONSIN FOREWORD With the approach of the first frost in Portage County the leaves begin to fall from the white birch and the poplar trees. Shortly the basswood turns yellow and the elm tree takes on a reddish hue. The real glory of autumn begins in October when the maples, as if blushing in modesty, turn to gold and crimson, and the entire forest around is aflame with color set off against deeper shades of evergreens and newly-planted Christmas trees. To me this is the most beautiful season of the year. But it is not of her beauty only that I write, but of her colorful past, for Portage County is already rich in history and legend. And I share, in part, at least, the conviction of Margaret Fuller who wrote more than a century ago that "not one seed from the past" should be lost. Some may wonder why I include the names listed in the first tax rolls. It is part of my purpose to anchor these names in our history because, if for no other reas on, they were here first and there can never be another first. The spellings of names and places follow the spellings in the documents as far as legibility permits. Some no doubt are incorrect in the original entry, but the major ity were probably correct and since have changed, which makes the original entry a matter of historic significance.

Dr. Jeffrey Charles I 2 /.,. JD 9 THESIS COMMITTEE CHAIR ~ 12-/3) tJCf DATE • ''Doc Will Lend Money'' The Life and Career of Dr. Attilio Henry Giannini Walter B. "Wally" Taibleson Thesis Abstract The principal purpose of this contextual biography of Dr. Attilio Henry Giannini, known as Doc, is to recognize his importance to the City of San Francisco. He was a major contributor to the community as a medical practitioner and as a member of the Board of Supervisors on two occasions. The major part of this thesis also documents Doc's innovative presence as a banker, on both the country's East and the West Coasts. He was a key factor in the early financing of both Broadway and Hollywood. The biography will improve and correct the historiography of the Southern California Motion Picture Industry. It is important to be correct in recognizing the individual who initiated the financing of the Southern California Motion Picture Industry. The industry leaders recognized Doc as the initial principal lender of what became Hollywood, and that is an impelling reason to research and write Doc's biography. He was the first banker to recognize motion picture making as a legitimate industry and was the major financial contributor to the initiation, development and growth of the motion picture industry and its capital city, Hollywood.

  • AJ Cronin: Conflict and Liberation Through Romance
ISSN 2308-8079. Studia Humanitatis. 2015. № 1. www.st-hum.ru УДК 821.111 A.J. CRONIN: CONFLICT AND LIBERATION THROUGH ROMANCE Fusco A. Conflict which involves both the external and individual inner world is the central theme of Cronin’s narrative world. Heroes in the fiction and Archibald himself struggle to achieve their aims and will never give up in front of difficulties. “Hatter’s Castle”, “The Stars look Down”, “The Keys of the Kingdom” contain dramatic tones that reach the top in “The Judas Tree”: the hero after a long wearing interior debate, puts an end to his own life. Conflict presented in Cronin’s lifelong romance has, however, a positive epilogue in which the hero is free from all his anxieties. “Desmonde” is the final chapter of Cronin’s story. Keywords: A.J. Cronin, conflict, external world, inner world, anxiety, search, writing, faith, confession, liberation. А.Д.
