BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORY NOTE: Henry Hathaway (1898 – 1985) was born Henri Leopold de Fiennes on March 13, 1889, in Sacramento, California, to actress Jean Weil and stage manager Henry Rhody. He started his career as a child film actor in 1911. In 1915 Hathaway quit school and went to work at Universal Studios as a laborer, later becoming a property man. He was recruited for service during World War I in 1917, Hathaway saw his time in the army as an opportunity to get an education. He was never deployed, contracting the flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic. After being discharged from the army in 1918, Hathaway pursued a career in financing but returned to Hollywood to work as a property man at Samuel Goldwyn Studios and Paramount Studios. By 1924 Hathaway was working as an Assistant Director at Paramount Studios, under directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Victor Fleming, Frank Lloyd, and William K. Howard. Shortly the basswood turns yellow and the elm tree takes on a reddish hue. The real glory of autumn begins in October when the maples, as if blushing in modesty, turn to gold and crimson, and the entire forest around is aflame with color set off against deeper shades of evergreens and newly-planted Christmas trees. To me this is the most beautiful season of the year. But it is not of her beauty only that I write, but of her colorful past, for Portage County is already rich in history and legend. And I share, in part, at least, the conviction of Margaret Fuller who wrote more than a century ago that "not one seed from the past" should be lost. Some may wonder why I include the names listed in the first tax rolls. It is part of my purpose to anchor these names in our history because, if for no other reas on, they were here first and there can never be another first. The spellings of names and places follow the spellings in the documents as far as legibility permits. Some no doubt are incorrect in the original entry, but the major ity were probably correct and since have changed, which makes the original entry a matter of historic significance. -

The images provide comprehensive information about many activities and events important to Southern California in the late 19th and early 20th century. Identification: photCL 400 volume 1 Language of Material: English Historical Note Volume 1 comprises one portion of the Historical Society of Southern California (HSSC) Collection, which was donated to the Huntington Library in 1992. The HSSC Collection as a whole contains approximately 15,000 photographs and negatives covering the period circa 1870 to circa 1980, and almost exclusively depicts Southern California. As such, it is an important visual record of the growth and history of the region. The Historical Society created the collection from photographs contributed by many donors. Many of the photographs have an identifying note regarding the donation (e.g. "Groff Gift"). Scope and Contents The collection consists of 3511 photographs, negatives and ephemeral items in various formats circa 1850s-1982. -

"Wally" Taibleson Thesis Abstract The principal purpose of this contextual biography of Dr. Attilio Henry Giannini, known as Doc, is to recognize his importance to the City of San Francisco. He was a major contributor to the community as a medical practitioner and as a member of the Board of Supervisors on two occasions. The major part of this thesis also documents Doc's innovative presence as a banker, on both the country's East and the West Coasts. He was a key factor in the early financing of both Broadway and Hollywood. The biography will improve and correct the historiography of the Southern California Motion Picture Industry. It is important to be correct in recognizing the individual who initiated the financing of the Southern California Motion Picture Industry. The industry leaders recognized Doc as the initial principal lender of what became Hollywood, and that is an impelling reason to research and write Doc's biography. He was the first banker to recognize motion picture making as a legitimate industry and was the major financial contributor to the initiation, development and growth of the motion picture industry and its capital city, Hollywood. -

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. On the Cover : Bette Davis and Errol Flynn in “ The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex." r think most cinemagoers favour the idea of the revival of favourite films, for to those who saw the originals there are the memories of the past and also comparisons between the old produc- tions and the new, particularly in respect to those that have been made both as a silent and a talkie. To the newer generation of the cinema public there is interest in comparing the old-time screen stones with the modem ones. “ ” To be technically correct, revival is not the right word, for the old favourites are re-made, but in the majority of cases the original film is not altered to any great extent so far as the story is concerned, though the introduction of spoken dialogue must necessarily be more expensive them that recorded by the printed sub-title of the silent picture. On the whole, the re-making of popular pictures is done so well that it is deserving of the highest praise, but there is one criticism I have to make. I think it is a great mistake to alter the original title. Take a person who saw the original film passing by a cinema which is showing a revival under a new title. There is nothing to indicate that this is a new version of an old favourite, and such a person might well walk on to another cinema, missing what would have been a real treat. -
