The following was compiled by Joseph Conroy

The first Joseph Conroy, in my branch of the family, to travel to the of America, was born in Queen's County, Ireland, in 1814, according to information on his gravestone. Sometime prior to 1843 he married Elizabeth Green, and had son, James, born in 1843, in Ireland. The first mention of Joseph in the United States was in Portland, Connecticut, where he became involved in land transactions on 27 March 1843. Listed below are some of the Land Records in Portland in which Joseph's name was recorded: Volume 1 Page 105 27 Mar 1843 Volume 2 Page 59 27 Mar 1843 Volume 4 Page 292 16 Jan 1854 The 1850 Census Schedule lists Joseph, wife Elizabeth, and James, Edward, and Ann as living in Portland. Vital Records also show that the last two were born to Joseph and Elizabeth in Portland. The same Schedule also states that Joseph's occupation was a "Quarryman", which was true of most men living in Portland at that time. Joseph Conroy died on 23 February 1854, cause unknown, and was buried in the Old St. John's Cemetery. Elizabeth had a monument erected to his memory, which still stands as good as new.

The following was compiled by Joseph Conroy

Information concerning the second generation Conroy is meager. The year of his birth has been estimated from the age shown on his Death Certificate. Whether he was born in Middletown or Portland is a question. In 1870 at the age of fifteen Joseph was employed at the Palmer and Kendall Mosquito Net Factory, on Factory Street, Middletown. Sarah Ryan's brother John was also working for the same concern at that time. When he applied for his Marriage Certificate Joseph listed his occupation as "Gardener." After the wedding he lived with his wife, Sarah, next door to his mother, at 203 Liberty Street. The 1880 Census Schedule reveals that Sarah's sister, Julia, was living at that address, also. Here Joseph died in 1890, and he was buried in the St. John's Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut, in Lot 93, Section C. At the time of his death he was employed as a "File-grinder" by Hall Brothers, Middletown, Connecticut.

News Article - Unknown Newspaper (Probably Middletown Press)

She Was a Loyal Fan Edmund Olds, long years of the Bond Hotel and now making his home in Florida, is in town, called here by the death of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Annie Greene of 57 Blue Hills Ave., who died this week at the age of 97. I well remember Mrs. Greene as one of the most avid of local baseball fans in the 1920’s, the era of Lou Gehrig, Leo Durocher, Jim Thorpe and others. She would arrange the affairs of her day, when the Hartford Senators were playing at home, so as to be in the stands at Clarkin Field when the umpire would set things in motion with the familiar “Play Ball.” Mrs. Greene was an affable, warmhearted woman and we got to be real friends during the days when I was writing baseball and she rooting for her favorites at the local ballpark.

The following was compiled by Joseph Conroy

Very little information pertaining to Edward Green has been found, except that contained on his Death Certificate, his gravestone, and on United States Census Schedules for 1850 and 1860.

He was born about 1784, in Stradbally Parish, Queen's County, Ireland. Sometime before 1850 he and his family had traveled to the United States of America. The maiden name of his wife, Esther, is not known. In addition to he and Esther, their daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, and their sons Patrick, Bartholomew, William, Richard, and Michael, had also settled in Connecticut by 1850. Although Elizabeth and Bartholomew spelled the name "Green" the brother William added an "e", to make it "Greene."

There is no indication that the elder Green's had any great amount of money, but their children, if not affluent, had sufficient money to be able to deal in real estate. From 1850 until the time of their deaths Edward and Esther lived at what is now 201 Liberty Street, Middletown, CT.

According to her Death Certificate Elizabeth Green was born in 1817 in Stradbally Parish, Queen's County, Ireland. She was married to Joseph Conroy sometime prior to 1843. A question arises as to whether James was the son of Elizabeth, for on Joseph's gravestone she had inscribed "Here lies Joseph Conroy with his son." However, the assumption is made that James was, in fact, her son. In any case James was born in Ireland about 1843, and Elizabeth was in Portland with her husband soon after, for their son, Edward, was born in Connecticut about 1845. Their next two children were definitely born in Portland, Connecticut. Their son Joseph apparently was born just before or just after the death of his father, in 1854. The 1850 Census Schedule reveals that Joseph's home in Portland also housed ten young Irish men, so it appears that Elizabeth was operating a rooming or boarding house while she lived in Portland. At some time between her husband's death in 1854 and 1860 she moved her family to Middletown and lived in the same house as her parents. In 1862, just before the death of her brother William, she bought that property, on the corner of Liberty and Grand Streets for the sum of $550. There was only one house on the property at that time. An Atlas published in 1874 clearly shows her property with two houses and a barn. A story has been told that she bought a house and lot on Grand Street and had the house moved to the Liberty Street property.

There can be no doubt that Elizabeth was a business woman, for in Portland she had five transactions in which she had been involved recorded in the Portland Land Office, and four in the City of Middletown. There may be more, but the following are certainly in her name:

The home in which Elizabeth and her family lived after they moved to Middletown accomodated two families, hers and that of her parents. Although small and unpretentious, it was well-arranged and nicely furnished, with two stairways to the second floor, the front and main stairs having a beautiful bannister. The "Parlor" contained an old-fashioned piano which must have been an antique at the turn of the century. It was in this home at what is now 201 Liberty Street, that most of her family died, including her parents, brother William, brother Bartholomew and the last of his family, her son Edward, and her two daughters, Esther and Ann. Here, she also passed away from causes unknown in 1891, and was laid to rest with her husband in the Old St. John's Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut. To her daughters Esther and Ann she left this home and a lot at the corner of Liberty and Prospect Streets. The house next door at what is now 203 Liberty Street she left to her grandchildren. In effect, that home became Joseph's wife's home for the rest of her life.

THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING Wedding bells pealed forth their glad chime from the tower of St.John’s Church, Middletown, Conn., on the morning of June 25, 1871. For fifty long years the same old bell in the same old tower of the same church has pealed in mirthful rhyme or tolled in deep mournful sound and with deep regard its notes have been heard, its sound was reverently heeded by the same couple who on the beautiful June morning mentioned tripped blithly, happily, to its music. They were Mr. Patrick Scully and Miss Margaret Green. It was during the same year, 1871, that Mr. Scully having seen enough of travel life and having found the mate that his soul had yearned to greet, decided to settle in both married and business life, and so during this long but, to them, happy half century, Mr. and Mrs. Scully have journeyed on together each the possessor of the other’s love, each the helper and advisor of the other and of their large and fine family of twelve children, whose names here follow:

Page 28. The Descendants of Edward and Ester Greene of Queens County, Ireland and Middletown, CT Copyright © 2006. Thomas P. Langdon. All Rights Reserved. Print Date: 3/7/2006. 409 Hitchcock Road, Southington, CT 06489 Mrs. Jane E. Flynn, John Scully, Miss Katherine Scully, Mrs. Joseph Rafftery, and William P. Scully of this city; Mrs. Michael Holoran of New Britain; Mrs. James B. Cronin, Bristol; Mrs. Joseph Anderson, Corona, L.I.; Mrs. Daniel Shea, Rockville; Martin T. Scully, Buhl, Idaho. It is now a good many years since No. 491 Middletown, Conn., was organized but on that day Patrick Scully became one of its charter members. Of the entire list of those pioneers of local unity he and but three others are alive. And of the esteem in which he is held, it is only necessary to say that the people of Middletown did not allow the fifty-year ago event to pass by without being fittingly noticed. Wedding bells again pealed out in the old tower and again Patrick Scully with his now older by fifty years loving partner at his side, marched up the aisle of St. John’s where High Mass was celebrated and blessings of priest and felicitations of people showered upon the happy couple. Nor were the men of Connecticut’s trade unmindful of the glad happening. They came in large numbers and made a great day of it bringing with them a purse full of gold dollars, one for each year of the couple’s united life, which was presented to them in their home at Staddle Hill, with hosts of friends as pleased spectators. It was Brother Fenton Thompson of No. 491, who delivered the gift of affection to Mr. and Mrs. Scully with those of his fellow members of the state surrounding. John Doyle, State President, Mark Sullvan and David J. Rynne, New Haven; Harry O. Brooks and Robert McBiren, Portland; John Brennan, Hartford; Joseph Collins, Arthur J. Ford, John F. Coleman, Meriden; Edward J. Carroll, and Michael McVerry, Waterbury; j. Fred Schempp, Bridgeport; M.R. Hyman, South Farm; Charles Schierer, Cornwell; John E. Scully, Middletown; David Brooks, Portland; W.A. Ingraham, New Britain; Thos. F. Foley, Hartford; J. Tynan, Wallingford. Bro. Scully came to America from Ireland in 1851. He was then but six years of age and is therefore in his 76th year. Until he was 16 he worked on a farm, thus for sixty years his good right arm and honest and well balanced mind have been spent continuously in horseshoeing. It would perhaps be making it too strong to wish Mr. and Mrs. Scully “many happy returns” of the event of our present story, but it is quite appropriate to say to both that though their years are numerous wishes extend to them on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary will follow them to the very end of their long and happy life together. Obituary - The , July 26th, 1884. (Copy from Regina Woltmann)

PORTLAND. Again it is the sad duty of your correspondent to chronicle the death of a highly esteemed citizen, Patrick Green, who breathed his last at about 9 p.m. Tuesday evening of last week, having reached the ripe old age of 70 years. The Sunday previous he attended Mass and many remarked his fine appearance. In the evening his son Patrick and Wife visited his Father's residence. After a few minutes conversation a paralytic stroke came upon him and all that medical aid could perform was done but all to no avail. A second stroke set in Tuesday and told plainly what was to come. In regard to the old Gentleman's career, it was of a true type. In 1839 he came to this country and was engaged to commence labors at Middlesex quarry; after a few months connection with said quarry he joined a party of men who were the first to throw a shovel full of dirt from the Shaler & Hall quarry, and from that time up to Sunday of last week (about 44 years) had labored ardously at that quarry. The funeral took place from his late residence, near the ferry, Thursday morning. St. Mary's Benevolent society, of which he was a member, turned out in large numbers, he being one of its first organizers here, as was the result in the St. John's benovelence in Middletown. The lengthy procession wended its way to St. Mary's Church where a Solemn High Mass was said by Rev. Father Byron. Miss Julia Conroy of Middletown presided at the organ; the hymns sung were very solemn indeed. After the ceremony the silent concourse of mourning friends proceeded to the old burying ground, Middletown, where all that was mortal of a true parent and friend was laid to rest.

While at the wake of his Father, Wednesday evening Mr. Green was taken by sorrowful news, having been informed that his dear child had left this world. Words cannot express the intense feeling of both Father and Mother in their sad loss.

The following was compiled by Regina Woltmann

Patrick Green, born in 1814 in Ireland, came to this area in 1839. It is believed that he emigrated from Queens County. He began working at the Middlesex Quarry in Portland; he later worked at the Shaler & Hall Quarry. Patrick married Mary Dunn, who was born in Stradbally, Queens County, on November 2, 1845. They were married at St. John’s Chapel by the Reverend John Brady. Patrick and Mary Green lived in the “Sand Bank” area before moving to the Kerry Lane area. They had

The children received some education and were able to read and write. Mary Dunn Green died in 1875. Patrick Green died July 14, 1884, at the age of 70. He had labored in the quarry for 44 years - up until a week before his death. Patrick had been one of the organizers of the St. John’s Benevolence Society in Middletown and also the St. Mary’s Benevolence Society in Portland.

Patrick Green, son of Patrick and Mary Dunn Green, married Annie Delay in 1883. Annie Delay was the daughter of Irish immigrants from County Cork. She was born in 1860 in the Rose Hill area of Portland where her father worked as a farmer. Patrick Green was employed by John Bransfield, the grocer, for a quarter of a century. He also was employed in Waterbury, Connecticut, for a short while. Patrick was a fireman and also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served as a delegate to the Hibernian convention in Hartford in 1910. Patrick and his wife rented an apartment in the brownstone building on the corner of Main and Freestone Avenue in Portland, CT. They had six children; two of whom, Mary and William, died very young. Patrick Green died in 1910 leaving Annie widowed with several children still in high school. She moved the family to East Main Street, Portland, and worked as a seamstress to earn money to support the children.

Page 49. The Descendants of Edward and Ester Greene of Queens County, Ireland and Middletown, CT Copyright © 2006. Thomas P. Langdon. All Rights Reserved. Print Date: 3/7/2006. 409 Hitchcock Road, Southington, CT 06489 Little is known of Sarah except the information found on the record of her birth which discloses that she was born on Green Street, Middletown, and was deliverd by an Elizabeth Baker. Later information indicates that the family had moved to Erin Street. Her brother John, at fifteen, was working for the Palmer and Kendall Mosquito Net Factory, on Factory Street, Middletown. Joseph Conroy, Sarah's future husband was working for the same firm. The last reference to Sarah's father, Michael, was in 1871, when he was listed as living on Liberty Street near Main Street. Her mother had died in 1877 and when her Marriage License was issued it carried a comment to the effect that the whereabouts of the bride's father was "Unknown," also there was an unsigned note attached to the license which reads "I approve of my daughter's marriage," but is unsigned. Prior to her marriage she had been living with here brother John on Erin Street. After her wedding she and Joseph Conroy lived in the house at 203 Liberty Street, and there she lived until her death. She told the story that she had her fortune told by a Gypsy and had been told that she would marry young, have a large family, and that her husband would die before the family was raised. As a result of this she said that she saved all the money that she could and, apparently, was able to acquire sufficient money to raise the family, after her husband died at the age of 36 years. It must be noted that none of her children were named after her father or mother. In her later life she never mentioned her parents, nor did she mention the fact that she had lived, at one time, only a few blocks from 203 Liberty Street where she spent most of her life. She did mention the "Balls," apparently the family of her niece, the daughter of Sarah's sister, Julia. In 1880 Julia was living with the Conroy's at 203 Liberty Street, prior to her own marriage. After Julia's family moved to New York Sarah visited a number of time, it appears, for she was familiar with that city. In her later years she appeard to have no close friends, and her friendliness with the neighbors extended to talking over the back fence. She was not a recluse and she traveled to nearby towns, Meriden, Hartford, Bristol, ets. The "Parlor" in her home was beautifun in the standards of those days, with velvet upholstered furniture, colorful lamps, marble-topped tables, etc. The "Dining Room" was of a similar standard, with a large oaken dining table and sideboard, and with plenty of china, crystal, and silver. Both of these rooms were usually closed and reserved for holidays or special occasions, when the women of the family would all bustle around the kitchen and finally provide an excellent dinner. None of Sarah's children reached her stature, in any respect! Her remains lie with those of her husband, Joseph, her daughter, Annie and her sons, Edward and James, in Lot 93, Section C, New St. John's Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut.

Scully having seen enough of travel life and having found the mate that his soul had yearned to greet, decided to settle in both married and business life, and so during this long but, to them, happy half century, Mr. and Mrs. Scully have

Page 53. The Descendants of Edward and Ester Greene of Queens County, Ireland and Middletown, CT Copyright © 2006. Thomas P. Langdon. All Rights Reserved. Print Date: 3/7/2006. 409 Hitchcock Road, Southington, CT 06489 journeyed on together each the possessor of the other’s love, each the helper and advisor of the other and of their large and fine family of twelve children, whose names here follow: Mrs. OLD SMITHY HERE WILL PASS JULY 1 Fenton Thompson Will Close Doors and Join with John Scully on Court Street. July 1st will mark the passing of one of the oldest horseshoeing establishments in Middletown, when Fenton Thompson, who has conducted a smithy on East Court Street for the last 30 years will close his doors and join forces with John Scully, who has an establishment on Center Street. By the closing of the Court street shop Middletown will have but one establishment devoted to the shoeing of horses and steers, which is rapidly becoming a lost art in these days of rapidly increasing number of automobile users. South Farms in the town part still boasts of a smithy on Main street presided over by Maurice Tynan. Upon the same date Middletown’s oldest blacksmith, Patrick Scully, will give up active work after spending 50 years at the trade and turn his interest in the business over to his son, who will form a partnership with Mr. Thompson. Mr. Thompson started in the business when but a young man and soon formed a partnership with the late Gilbert Peckham, which was continued until the latter withdrew from the firm six years ago. Following this the former has continued the business himself. Owing to the great decrease in the use of horses all the work in the blacksmithing and horseshoeing trade can be easily cared for by one shop.

Print Date: 3/7/2006. 409 Hitchcock Road, Southington, CT 06489 Time was when Blacksmith Thompson shod 150 livery stable horses in his shop alone to say nothing of the many stores and business houses that used teams for delivery and other purposes. The livery business at the present time is practically all automobile as is the delivery service. As far back as can be remembered the site on which the present building stands has always been used for the same purpose, originally being occupied by the father of the late George Coles, who conducted the business for a number of years. Statistics today show that where there were 65,000 blacksmith shops in the United States five years ago now there are but 40,000. The average age of horseshoers is 51 years, and while there formerly were quantities of young men willing and anxious to take up this well paying trade, at the present time but few apprentices are to be found who are anxious to take up a lost art. Just what will be done with the old smithy upon the closing of its doors the latter part of this month has not been definitely determined, but the chances are that the tinkling of the anvil and the showers of sparks so common in establishments of this kind will be a thing of the past.
