En la historia de esa repre- sentación ha imperado el relativismo, o lo que en cine se llama el «efecto Rashomón». La ficción es el reino de la verosimilitud y no de la veracidad, es hacer interpretaciones que generan otras. Uno de los directores más celebrados de la Edad de Oro del cine mexicano fue Emilio «El Indio» Fernández, quien en buena parte de sus películas profesó un indige- nismo mítico y constructivo, propio de todo discurso del prestigio, y por ello susceptible de ser cuestionado y discutido. Su compañero de fórmula, el fotógrafo Gabriel Figueroa, le aportó composición, luces y sombras, a unas imágenes celebratorias y abundantes sobre el mundo indígena mexicano. Criticables, como cualquier retrato sobre el otro indígena, las películas de dueto mexicano están allí para alimentar el debate. Sin embargo, quizá lo más importante, más allá de la candidez de su indigenismo nacionalista, sea que varias décadas después esas películas siguen iluminando al cine de América Latina, gracias a sus parti- culares lecciones sobre el riesgoso y fascinante perspectivismo que significa todo retrato y autorretrato cinematográfico.

    Emilio Fernández Introducción Emilio Fernández es una de las personalidades más representativas de la historia cinematográfica nacional. Sus filmes, siempre repletos de hermosos paisajes, relatos cautivadores y diálogos retóricos, se dedican a ofrecer un mensaje nacionalista. A través del séptimo arte, el director construye su propia visión de un México mítico y simbólico, donde la educación se posiciona como el pilar fundamental de los ideales progresistas del siglo XX. Emilio Fernández y el cine didáctico Emilio Fernández Romo nació en 1904 en Hondo, un pequeño pueblo minero de Coahuila. Su madre, una indígena kikapú, y su padre, un mestizo que había sido general de la Revolución, se encargaron de inculcarle un profundo amor por México. Desde muy joven, se une al movimiento carrancista, bajo las órdenes de Francisco Murguía, y sirve como soldado raso durante once años. En 1923, participa en el levantamiento de Adolfo Huerta contra el gobierno de Álvaro Obregón. El golpe fracasa y Fernández es encarcelado, pero logra escapar y salir del país. A partir de entonces, desempeña distintos oficios a lo largo de Norteamérica para ganarse la vida. El coahuilense fue camarero, empleado de lavandería, estibador y, finalmente, albañil en los estudios de Hollywood. Ello le permitió tener un primer acercamiento al cine y comenzar a aprender sobre su realización. Trabaja de extra y de doble en distintas producciones. En 1930 obtiene un papel en el corto Gitanos de Chano Huerta. Ese mismo año, lo invitan a ver una proyección privada de algunos cortos de Serguei Eisenstein. La diferencia estética que la obra del director tenía con las producciones hollywoodenses lo impresiona.
