The Influence of the Renaissance on Richard Hooker
Perichoresis Volume 12. Issue 1 (2014): 93-116 DOI 10.2478/perc-2014-0006 THE INFLUENCE OF THE RENAISSANCE ON RICHARD HOOKER EGIL GRISLIS * University of Manitoba ABSTRACT. Like many writers after the Renaissance, Hooker was influenced by a number of classical and Neo-Platonic texts, especially by Cicero, Seneca, Hermes Trimegistus, and Pseudo-Dionysius. Hooker’s regular allusions to these thinkers help illuminate his own work but also his place within the broader European context and the history of ideas. This paper addresses in turn the reception of Cice- ro and Seneca in the early Church through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Hooker’s use of Cicero- nian and Senecan ideas, and finally Hooker’s use of Neo -Platonic texts attributed to Hermes Trismegis- tus and Dionysius the Areopagite. Hooker will be shown to distinguish himself as a sophisticated and learned interpreter who balances distinctive motifs such as Scripture and tradition, faith, reason, expe- rience, and ecclesiology with a complex appeal to pagan and Christian sources and ideas. KEY WORDS: Cicero, Hermes Trismegistus, Pseudo-Dionysius, Renaissance, Seneca Introduction The Anglican Church has had a rich past, as the churchmen who reshaped its life in the sixteenth century were also learned scholars (see Sykes and Booty, 1988; Evans and Wright, 1991), such as archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), bishop John Jewel (1511-1570), archbishop John Whitgift (c.1532-1604), and priest and theologian Richard Hooker (c.1554-1600). More recently, some schol- ars (such as Lake, 1988: 227, 230) have singled out Richard Hooker as the inven- tor of Anglicanism. -

Andrea Corsali and the Southern Cross Anne McCormick Hordern House 2019 1 In 1515 Andrea Corsali, an Italian under the patronage of the Medici family, accompanied a Portuguese voyage down the African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope, en route to Cochin, India. On his return Corsali’s letter to his patron describing the voyage was published as a book which survives in only a handful of copies: CORSALI, Andrea. Adi. xi.di Dicembre Nel. M.D.XV1. This book included the earliest illustration of the stars of the Crux, the group of stars today known as the Southern Cross. This paper will explore the cultural context of that publication, along with the significance of this expedition, paying attention to the identification and illustration of the stars of the Southern Cross; in particular, I shall investigate why the book was important to the Medici family; the secrecy often attaching to geographical information acquired during the Age of Discovery; Andrea Corsali’s biography; and printing in Florence at this period; and other works issued by the printer Giovanni Stefano from Pavia. Corsali’s discoveries, particularly the ground-breaking astronomical report and illustration of the Southern Cross off the Cape of Good Hope, remained a navigational aid to voyages into the Southern Ocean and on to The East and the New World for centuries to follow, and ultimately even played a part in the European discovery of Australia. -

Starting from Padua in the fifteenth century, his research interests have expanded towards more general coverage of Venetian history c. 1300-1797, though focusing primarily on the Terraferma state. John E. Law teaches history at Swansea University, and has also long served the Society for Renaissance Studies. Research on fifteenth- century Verona was the first step towards broad scholarly investigation of Renaissance Italy, including its historiography. -

Rethinking Savoldo's Magdalenes
Rethinking Savoldo’s Magdalenes: A “Muddle of the Maries”?1 Charlotte Nichols The luminously veiled women in Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo’s four Magdalene paintings—one of which resides at the Getty Museum—have consistently been identified by scholars as Mary Magdalene near Christ’s tomb on Easter morning. Yet these physically and emotionally self- contained figures are atypical representations of her in the early Cinquecento, when she is most often seen either as an exuberant observer of the Resurrection in scenes of the Noli me tangere or as a worldly penitent in half-length. A reconsideration of the pictures in connection with myriad early Christian, Byzantine, and Italian accounts of the Passion and devotional imagery suggests that Savoldo responded in an inventive way to a millennium-old discussion about the roles of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene as the first witnesses of the risen Christ. The design, color, and positioning of the veil, which dominates the painted surface of the respective Magdalenes, encode layers of meaning explicated by textual and visual comparison; taken together they allow an alternate Marian interpretation of the presumed Magdalene figure’s biblical identity. At the expense of iconic clarity, the painter whom Giorgio Vasari described as “capriccioso e sofistico” appears to have created a multivalent image precisely in order to communicate the conflicting accounts in sacred and hagiographic texts, as well as the intellectual appeal of deliberately ambiguous, at times aporetic subject matter to northern Italian patrons in the sixteenth century.2 The Magdalenes: description, provenance, and subject The format of Savoldo’s Magdalenes is arresting, dominated by a silken waterfall of fabric that communicates both protective enclosure and luxuriant tactility (Figs. -

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

About the Program by Anne MacNeil The Marchesa of Mantua, Isabella d’Este — known as “The First Lady of the Renaissance” — is often described as a female counterpart to the “Renaissance men” for whom Italy is celebrated. Among her interests, Isabella planned gardens and raised animals. She operated a perfume and cosmetic pharmacy that produced soaps and scents for herself and her friends. She excelled in fashion design, creating for herself a signature style that other women, like Lucretia Borgia, were eager to imitate. She was keenly interested in politics, government, and social life, and had evident gifts for all three, but it is chiefly for her activities as a patron and a collector that history remembers Isabella d’Este. Her famous studiolo and grotta, the empty rooms of which may still be seen in the ducal palace in Mantua, once housed one of the most magnificent art collections of Europe. Isabella’s paintings, sculpture, jewels, and other art objects demonstrate important themes of the Renaissance: possessing the ancient world through the collection of antiquities, demonstrating erudition and virtue through the acquisition of classical narratives, and fashioning an identity through portraiture and personal emblems. Her collecting increased her cultural capital among the aristocracy. It also reflected her humanist education as a child at the court of Ferrara, enhanced the prestige of the Gonzaga court in Mantua, and facilitated political and social opportunities for her children. Isabella was a scholar of Greek, Latin, and Italian literatures, an avid musician, a patron of music and musicians, and a connoisseur of musical instruments. -

Etichette e identità L’etichetta è una comoda scorciatoia per riconoscere in un bailamme di oggetti simili lo scarto che irriducibilmente li diversifica, per dare conto di identità plurime ad un primo sguardo, per trovare con rapidità ciò che già si sta cercando. Per questo le etichette riportano l’estremamente peculiare, lo specifico, il distintivo. Ma le etichette, non a caso, si appiccicano, perché sono estranee e superficiali. Quando si voglia non trovare ma veramente cercare, le etichette sono inservibili. La storia del teatro ne è piena. Giusto per fare degli esempi, alle origini della ricomparsa del teatro in Occidente c’è l’etichetta dramma liturgico e all’opposto cronologico, prima dell’esplosione novecentesca, la nascita della regia. Etichette, per l’appunto, che, attaccate per indicare, hanno finito per ridurre al silenzio ogni complessità culturale sottostante. Della sperimentazione teatrale a Ferrara nel Quattrocento, di quella stagione di grande fermento culturale e di radicato progetto politico si è spesso riferito usando l’etichetta di festival plautini, creando così il vuoto prima, dopo e in mezzo alle messe in scena di Plauto e Terenzio. Come se i tempi brevi di quegli eventi spettacolari non fossero intrecciati ai tempi lunghi della vita culturale cittadina. Come ricordava Braudel, però, «tempi brevi e tempi lunghi coesistono e sono inseparabili»1 e voler vedere gli uni prescindendo dagli altri significa fermarsi alla superficie dell’etichetta. -

chapter 11 The Longs and Shorts of an Emergent Nation: Nikolaos Loukanes’s 1526 Iliad and the Unprosodic New Trojans Calliope Dourou According to Milman Parry’s seminal definition, the formula in the Homeric poems is “a group of words which is regularly employed under the same met- rical conditions to express a given essential idea”.1 When analysing, in partic- ular, the intricate set of rules underlying the noun-epithet formulae for the Achaeans,2 the eminent philologist spares no effort in elaborately explaining how phrases such as ἐυκνήμιδας Ἀχαιούς or κάρη κομόωντας Ἀχαιούς are regular- ly employed in the Homeric corpus because they fit the metrical needs of the dactylic hexameter. Perusing, however, Nikolaos Loukanes’s 1526 intriguing ad- aptation of the Iliad and paying close attention to the fixed epithets allotted by him to the Achaeans and the Trojans, we are faced with a distinctly dissimilar system of nomenclature, conditioned primarily not by any prosody-related ex- igencies, but rather by a proto-national sense of pride in the accomplishments of the gallant forefathers and by a concurrent, profound antipathy towards the people that came to be viewed as the New Trojans, the Turks.3 1 Loukanes and His Intellectual and Historical Context Born at the dawn of the eventful sixteenth century, the Cinquecento of the startling transatlantic discoveries, the ceaseless Italian Wars, the vociferous emergence of the Protestant Reformation, and the unrelenting Ottoman ad- vance into European territory, Nikolaos Loukanes, like so many of his erudite compatriots residing in flourishing cities in the West, appears to have ardently 1 Parry (1971: 272).
