Message from The Principal I am delighted to welcome you to Lawrence College, Pakistan’s premier residential institution. Located in the heart of Murree’s greenery the College provides a very beautiful, serene and safe environment. This, combined with a healthy and invigorating climate provides ideal conditions for academic, sports and co-curricular activities. Our inclusive ethos and commitment to the highest standards of all round education have ensured an enviable reputation for Lawrence College. We are proud and gratified that our students come from all over Pakistan and represent a broad cross section of society making LCGG a mini-Pakistan in the truest sense. We are justifiably proud of our academic performance, but at LCGG education means much more than the pursuit of top grades. Character building, instilling high moral values, development of wholesome personality and awareness of societal obligations are central to what we offer here. We are acutely aware of our obligation to equip our students to make their way in the world as confident, caring, dignified and responsible global citizens. Yet its opacity has hindered academic research. We use open sources to construct unique new data on the backgrounds, careers, and post-retirement activities of post-1971 Corps Commanders and Directors-General of Inter-Services Intelligence. We provide evidence of bureaucratic predictability and professionalism while officers are in service. After retirement, we show little involvement in electoral politics but extensive involvement in military-linked corporations, state employment, and other positions of influence. This combination provides Pakistan’s military with an unusual blend of professional discipline internally and political power externally - even when not directly holding power.     AiA Art News-service Fake paintings of renowned painters being sold in Capital Listen ISLAMABAD: The fraud of sale of fake paintings of the renowned calligraphers and Painters with their fake signatures was going on in Islamabad. It was told that the fake paintings and pieces of calligraphy were being sold only at the price of Rs4000 to Rs6000 while the real price of these master pieces were in range of Rs50,000 to Rs80,000. The fake paintings and calligraphy pieces of Syed Sadequin, Abdul Rehman Chugtai Shakoor, Ahmed Pervez, Ustad Haji Muhammad Sharif, Anna Molka Ahmed, Zubaida Agha and Ismail Gulgee are included which are being sold in Islamabad. Painter Imran Hunazai said that though the renowned art galleries were avoiding to attribute the fake artwork with renowned painters yet the fake artwork of the renowned painters and calligraphists were being sold in the shops. Lecturer of National Collage of Arts Hassan Ali said the sale of fake art works of renowned painters and calligraphists is immoral but unfortunately no legal action was taken to stop this practice. He said there is always laboratory test conducted in the developed world to examine the authenticity of the art work of the renowned painter but there is no technology in Pakistan for this purpose due to which the painters and calligraphists affected financially. He said the incident of sale of fake artworks were more in Karachi than in Islamabad. It is to be mentioned that an MNA at his residence at parliament lodges last week purchased a fake paintings which were attributed to renowned painters and paid Rs6000 to each paintings whose real price in range of Rs75,000.

(Corresponding Author) Dr. Naela Aamir Associate Professor, College of Art & Design ABSTRACT KEYWORDS: Calligraphy has been an expression of Muslim artistic CALLIGRAPHY, identity since the arrival of Islam. It primarily grew PAINTERLY out of the significance of Qur’an as sacred text and CALLIGRAPHY , was driven by the aesthetics of ornament central to SACRED TEXT , Islamic art. Since Pakistan sought a national identity ISLAMIC ART , after Partition, art forms of the Islamic world became PAKISTANI ART , one of the main frontiers of expressing a unique SOUTH ASIA , identity. However, as the first few decades of MODERNISM, Pakistan coincided with a greater interaction with QUR'AN TEXT , the West, a new visual idiom developed in calligraphy ART IN PAKISTAN as well; the Painterlys Calligraphy. This paper . describes how Pakistani Calligraphers, spearheaded by creative imagination, broke from tradition and infused aesthetics of modern art in indigenous sensibility. After establishing the significance of Calligraphy in Islam, the paper features the pioneers of Painterly Calligraphy in Pakistan and analyses some of their works.
