Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 56, Issue No. 2 (July – December, 2019) Syed Munawar Abbas * Razia Sultana ** Biradari Politics of Alliances and Opposition in Jhang District during the Military Regimes: A case Study of General Pervez Musharraf’s Rule Abstract Biradarism is also fundamental characteristic of socio-politics of district Jhang [Pakistani-Punjab]; its dominant biradaris have immense potential to decisively influence national, provincial and district levels politics [on behalf of their eco- social supremacy]. The formation of electoral alliances is based on the collaborative interest-based national and local [biradari] power politics. Number of alliances were locally constituted by national aristocracy [especially by dictators]. Locally-constituted-alliances under different dictators had further strengthened the exploitative grip of these biradaris. The most decisive alliances [and their respective oppositions] were formulated during different elections of Musharraf’s regime; in which Syeds collaborated with Lalis and Qazis; Sials with Syeds and Moulvis [Religious groups]; and Sahibzaadaaz with Cheela-Sials. Biradaris [clans/castes] have been remained the integral part of mainstream politics in Sub-continent, particularly in western Punjab [Pakistani] and most importantly in its sub-units like Jhang district. After the creation of Pakistan, their dominant eco-social roles have become more vibrant in all respects, especially in politics. Every biradari has different levels of importance due to its numbers, economic resources, political affiliations, land holdings and social networking.1 These are the basic factors, which lead the biradaris to hold power at local level [Biradarism] as well as at provincial and national levels. Biradaris are embodiment of power in Pakistani politics. -

PASSPORTS TO PRIVILEGE: THE ENGLISH-MEDIUM SCHOOLS IN PAKISTAN TARIQ RAHMAN _____________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Based on two recent surveys of some selected urban areas of Pakistan, the author draws interesting conclusions in this article about the English-medium schools in Pakistan. The elites of the country have long realized the power of the English language and have even institutionalized the process of acquiring the same. As seen elsewhere in South Asia, the English-speaking elites of the country profess one thing about their national languages and practise something else for their own children. The craving for excellence in English language as a tool for a more successful life is not confined to the city elites but has penetrated the army, the air force, and the naval branches of a country that has frequently been ruled by army generals. It is also clear from this article that the privileged children of Pakistan are westernised in terms of lifestyle and liberal in attitude towards India, although after joining the state, they are seen supporting the militaristic policies of the state. _____________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION English is the official language of Pakistan. It is used in all domains of power - government, bureaucracy, military, judiciary, commerce, media, education and research - at the highest level. Because it is empowering to learn English, people all over the country are ready to invest in it for the future of their children. Because of this demand, all over the cities of Pakistan one can see boards advertising institutions which claim to be English-medium schools or tuition ‘centres’ claiming to teach spoken English and English for passing all kinds of examinations and interviews. -

If it is reproduced, the Journal of Indo-Pacific Affairs requests a courtesy line. ith a shift in the balance of power in the Far East, as well as multiple chal- Wlenges in the wider international security environment, several nations in the Indo-Pacific region have undergone significant changes in their defense pos- tures. This is particularly the case with India, which has gone from a regional, largely Pakistan-focused, perspective to one involving global influence and power projection. This has presented ramifications for all the Indian armed services, but especially the Indian Air Force (IAF). Over the last decade, the IAF has been trans- forming itself from a principally army-support instrument to a broad spectrum air force, and this prompted a radical revision of Indian aipower doctrine in 2012. It is akin to Western airpower thought, but much of the latest doctrine is indigenous and demonstrates some unique conceptual work, not least in the way maritime air- power is used to protect Indian territories in the Indian Ocean and safeguard sea lines of communication. Because of this, it is starting to have traction in Anglo- American defense circles.1 The current Indian emphases on strategic reach and con- ventional deterrence have been prompted by other events as well, not least the 1999 Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan, which demonstrated that India lacked a balanced defense apparatus. -

Introduction The school cadet organisation originates from 1859, when schools at Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Rossall, Felsted, Hurstpierpoint, Winchester and Tonbridge formed armed uniformed units as part of a national reserve to counter a perceived threat from abroad. By 1900, cadet units were established in over 100 schools across the country and in 1908, these units were re-titled the Officer Training Corps (OTC). In 1948, the OTC was renamed the Combined Cadet Force. The aim of the Combined Cadet Force is to provide a framework through which young people develop the qualities of team work, self-reliance, resourcefulness, leadership and responsibility. A weekly programme of military training is designed to give young people at King’s a chance to exercise responsibility and leadership, to provide them with knowledge of our defence forces, and to encourage those who might be interested in becoming officers of the Armed Services. Uniform members of the Combined Cadet Force will regularly stay on Royal Air Forces bases, therefore it is important that cadets are able to demonstrate an awareness of the structure and organisation of the Royal Air Force, its role in the defence of the United Kingdom and her interests and the operations in which the Royal Air Force are currently engaged. -
