' ' Railroad Passenger Service - in Maine During the period.between the end of World War II and 1959, all rail branch line passenger service in Maine was discontinued. Also during this period, some downward adjustment in main-line service was made, but in 1960, the following routes were receiving daily service. (See Exhibit 1): Bangor and Aroostook Railroad - Van Buren-Bangor Maine Central Railroad - Vanceboro-Bangor Bangor-Augusta-Portland Bangor-Lewiston-Portland Boston and Maine Railroad - Portland-North Berwick-Poston Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad - Burnham Junction-Belfast Canadian National Railway - Portland-Bethel-Montreal Canadian Pacific Rai3.way - Vanceboro-Brownville Junction-Green- ville Another significant development of this period was the switch from conventional passenger equipment to Bud.d cars (self-propelled) between Portland and Boston. This required through passengers to change trains at Portland. • 1 In raid-1959, both the Bangor and Aroostook and Maine . Central petitioned the Public Utilities Commission for authority to abandon all passenger service on their lines. In these cases, the rail carriers introduced evidence show­ ing the following decline in patronage: ' Percentage Decline in Railroad Period Passenger Traffic Maine Central 1949-1958 65.5% Bangor and Aroostook 1949-1958 70.9% Boston and Maine 1954-1959 5 3.4% As a result of the proceedings that followed, the P.U.C. ordered . both railroads to continue a minimum amount of service for one more year. (MEC two round trips between Bangor and Portland - one to Vanceboro, and one round trip on the BAR). The Maine Central appealed the P.U.C. decision to the Maine Supreme Court. The Court concluded that Maine Central should be allowed to abandon service, and Maine Central discontinued opera­ tions effective September 5, 1960. Because of complete dependence on the Maine Central for feeder traffic and because of Maine Central schedule adjustments in the spring of 1960, the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad abandoned passenger service on March 9, 1960. Bangor and Aroostook complied with the P.U.C. Order and con­ tinued its one train per day. (See Exhibit 2 for 1961 service). 2 Because of a continuing decline in patronage and increasing financial losses, the P.U.C. authorized the Bangor and Aroostook to discontinue service on September 5, 1961. During the period 1961 through 1964, both the Boston and Maine and Canadian National made reductions in passenger service which, on the Canadian National, resulted in summer only operation between Portland and Montreal. • Routes receiving service through 1964 are shown on Exhibit 3 attached. After extensive investigation, the Interstate Commerce Com­ mission allowed the Boston and Maine to discontinue service on January 4, 1965. The Canadian National operated only five (5) round trip passenger trains during the summer of 1966. Canadian National operated its last passenger train on August 13, 1966. Routes receiving passenger service in Maine during the year 1966 are shown on Exhibit 4 attached. The Canadian Pacific operates the only scheduled rail pas­ senger service in Maine today. This service consists of one daily round trip designed to serve the Canadian cities of Montreal, P.Q. and Saint John, N.B., and is shown on Exhibit 5 attached. 3 1960 Service / 7 Gran?i,l»l« fort Fairfield 'N.   • Harry Green Left Vilna, Russia, at Age Sixteen to Escape the Army
    Mohawks when the French and British explorers came. Until a hundred years ago Aroostook was a frontier region. During the American Revolution loyal British escaped to Nova Scotia and Houlton. Now one-third of the residents are descendants of Loyalists and live in peace with Swedes, French, English, Irish, and Scots. Harry Green left Vilna, Russia, at age sixteen to escape the army. His father, a lumberman, sent him to a friend in Philadelphia, but Harry did not like city life. He managed to reach Houlton in 1895; there he photographed and framed pictures. In a few months he learned English and traveled with a horse and wagon. He brought his parents and six brothers and two sisters. In a few years the family opened stores throughout Aroostook Harry Green County as well as south in Waterville and Augusta. When I met Alfred Green (Harry's son) in Houlton, he was retired. He told me he was a "wild one" when he was a young man. It was his non-Jewish wife who changed him. He began to work in Aroostook was not always peaceful. Courtesy of the Library of Congress The War at Home: Copperheads Down East, 1861-1865 Tim Garrity In the common American memory of the Civil War, Maine is counted among the northern states most solidly supportive of the Union cause, sending to the fight more than thirty regiments of soldiers and thousands of sailors. Of the state’s approximately three hundred thousand male inhabitants, almost seventy thousand men served in the military, and more than twenty-eight thousand of these were wounded, killed, or died of disease.1 Maine civilians expressed their support, too, cheering as the men left home and marched away to the seat of war. Their majority votes at town meetings raised bounties to encourage enlistment and assist soldiers’ families. They sent gifts of food, blankets, bandages, clothing, newspapers, and affectionate letters to their soldiers far from home. Booming cannon and pealing church bells spread the news when the Union armies won battles. The Civil War continues to be highly visible in Maine’s landscape, living on in monuments that abide in cemeteries and public squares of almost every town and village in the state. But that picture of cheering civilians 49 and soldiers marching to defend the flag is incomplete. Despite the large numbers of Maine people who expressed support for the Union war effort, there was also a significant, persistent, and vocal minority that opposed it.

In the west the lodge-poles made trails; hence appropriate. In the east word used only for "game-trails". In Massachusetts the word "path", as The Bay Path was used. In Maine there were, except locally, no paths that left any mark. In winter show-shoe tracks might make a path, but they were not enduring. In Maine the term used has always been "routes"(tho' Joseph Chadwick, 1764, used "passagge").The land sections were called Reasohewlls Maine was a country full of water-ways. Iippssible in such a country to get along by land without great difficulties. Canoe easier ana would carry a load besides all food and implements needed. It does not matter that these routes are no longer impor­ tant; they still exist, as paths would not, for anyone who travelled in certain airections would aturally go by them ano anyone acquainted with the woods can tell where they were.
