"THE MEDAL" AS AWARDED IN

GENERAL I. Approval was given by Hie Late Majesty King George VI for the in- stitution of "THE KOREA MEDAL" in general recognition of service by Brit- ish Commonwealth Forces on behalf of the in repelling ag- gression in Korea, with special regard to the exacting nature of condi- tions in which duty there is being carried out. QUALIFYING DATES 2. Insofar as the Canadian Armed Forces are concerned, the commencing date for qualifying service is 2 July 50 to 27 July 53. 3. The Medal will bear on the obverse the uncrowned effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II encircled by the Canadian Royal Title and the word "CANADA". The reverse will bear a design of Hercules fighting the Hydra. DESCRIPTION & PRECEDENCE OF RIBBON (a) The ribbon is in blue and yellow, the blue representing the United Nations flag and the yellow being the colour tradition- ally used for awards in recognition of services in the far east. (b) The ribbon will be worn immediately after all previously awarded Campaign Stars and War Medals and before the ribbon of the United Nations Service Medal. QUALIFYING CONDITIONS 5. (a) (i) Naval Service Afloat. The qualifying service will be 28 days, since 2 Jul 50, inclusive, in ships or craft en- gaged in operations off the Korean Coast. (ii) Naval Service Ashore. The qualifying service will be one day or more on duty ashore in Korea, since 2 Jul 50. (iii) Individuals proceeding on temporary duty on visits or inspections must qualify under the conditions of para- graph 5 (d). (b) The (i) The qualification will be service of one day or more on the posted strength of a unit or formation in Korea, since 2 Jul 50. (ii) Personnel on detachment posting in Korea from a parent unit in Japan will qualify for the award on the one day qualification. (iii) Individuals proceeding on temporary duty on visits or inspections must qualify under the conditions of para- graph 5 (d)o (iv) A posting to Korea for the purpose of detention will not count as service on a posted strength of unit. (c) Royal Canadian Air Force The qualification will be service since 2 Jul 50, inclusive: (i) One operational sortie over Korea or Korean waters. (ii) Service of one day or more on duty on land in Korea. (iii) Individuals proceeding on temporary duty on visits or inspections must qualify under the conditions of para- graph 5 (d). (iv) Service of 28 days afloat in Korean waters. The term "Korean waters" in this context means those areas of the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan over which it has been necessary to operate in support of operations in Korea. (d) Visits & Inspections - Official visits, inspections, etc. on duty in Korea or in ships or craft engaged in operations off the Korean Coast, will be a qualification provided that they amount to thirty days either continuous or aggregated. Visi- tors, even if posted to the strength of an "X" List or a unit in Korea must complete the required 30 days. (e) Short Service (i) The grant for gallantry in Korean operations, on a spe- cific occasion of a British Honour, Decoration or Medal of the status of the British Empire Medal or above, or a M.I.D. or a Queen’s Commendation, will qualify the re- cipient for the Korea Medal° (ii) If qualifying service in Korean operations is brought to an end on account of death or evacuation owing to wounds or other disability due to service, the reduced period of service will be a qualification. SERVICE IN JAPAN 6o Service on land in Japan, or on the way to Japan from anywhere outside Korea or Korean waters, will not constitute qualifying operational service for the award of the Korea Medal. MENTION-in-DESPATCHES 7. When a MoI.D. or Queen’s Commendation has been granted for service in the Korean operations, the single bronze oak leaf emblem will be worn on the ribbon of the Korea Medal. CIVILIAN CATEGORIES 8 (a) Members of civilian organizations named below, who have served with the Canadian Armed Forces in the Korean operations will qualify under the same rules as the service to which attached, provided they wore the approved uniform of their organization: Canadian Red Cross Society Voluntary Aid Detachments Order of St John of Jerusalem Defence Research Teams Cable & Wireless Detachments (b) War Correspondents (i) Attached to Naval Forces - Under the same rules as for Naval Forces except that the qualifying period in re- spect- of service ashore will be 30 days either continu- ous or aggregated. (ii) Attached to Army Forces - Under the same rules as for Army Forces except that the qualifying period will be 3o days as (b) (i). (iii) Attached to Air Forces - Three operational sorties over Korea or Korean waters. Service of 30 days or more on land in Korea either continuous or aggregated. Service of 28 days afloat in Korean waters, either continuous or aggregated. (iv) The service of War Correspondents with civil bodies rep- resenting the United Nations Secretariat or Specialized agencies, or with civil bodies such as the United Nation Commission for the Unification and Rehabilitation of Korea, or the Civil Assistance Command, or Civil Relief Teams will not be a qualification for the Korea Medal. (v) War Correspondents who have accepted or accept from any foreign government a general award in recognition of service in the Korean operations will not be eligible for the Korea Medal. PROVISIONAL APPROVAL TO WEAR RIBBON 9. (a) Provided an officer or their rank of the Canadian Army has rendered the required qualifying service, officers commanding units may issue provisional approval to wear the ribbon. (b) The following entry will be published in Part 2 Orders: "Provisionally awarded the Korea Medal"° (c) The provisional authority issued by the commanding officer for the wearing of the ribbon does not constitute an authority for the issue of the medal itself. Before the medal is issued all entitlements will be checked from service documents. ISSUE OF RIBBON 10. The ribbon will be issued under unit arrangements, every person so entitled will receive a free issue of four inches of ribbon. Provisioning action has already been taken for a supply of ribbon. ISSUE OF MEDAL 11. Applications should be submitted to AHQ. 12. The application will be submitted through the applicant’s com- manding officer. Applications will be forwarded to AHQ directly from units and not through command or area headquarters. The medal will be sent from AHQ directly to units. However, in the event that the entitle- ment to this medal is doubtful and correspondence is necessary, such cor- respondence will be conducted through the normal channels. 13o Those serving in the Far East will NOT submit applications until their return to Canada. 14. Applicants claiming this award by virtue of visits or inspections in Korea will net apply on the form Appendix "A". In these cases the ap- plication will be made by letter through the normal channels giving full particulars of authority and reason for the journey, dates in Korea and any other relevent information. 15. The medal will be engraved with the number, initials and surname of the officer or other rank. Care must be taken to ensure that these particulars are correctly shown on the application for this award. DATE OF ISSUE: 28 April 1952
