There is a wide range of support services available in St.Helens for vulnerable people who may need some support to enable them to have greater independence and improve the quality of their lives.
This directory has been produced to help you gain information on what is available and how to access the support you need to live independently in your own home.
Who may need support?
Examples of people who need support are:
• People who have difficulty coping because of their age (including older people, teenage parents, young people leaving care or who are at risk) • People who have been in prison or are at risk of offending/re-offending • Women at Risk of Domestic abuse • People with Mental Health Problems • People with Learning Disabilities • People with Drug or Alcohol Problems • Homeless families • Single homeless people
St.Helens Council will review the needs of people living in St.Helens regularly to make sure that services meet the needs of the local community.
Who provides it?
Support services are provided by many different organisations such as registered social landlords, charitable organisations, private organisations and voluntary organisations. Contact details are given in this directory for all the organisations that provide support in St.Helens.
What support is available?
People can get several different type of support dependent on their own need. These are some examples:
Floating Support: This is a support service that is offered to people in their own home and aims to support them to maintain their home. Generally, as the skills and confidence are gained to be able to live independently, support may lessen or cease altogether.
Hostel Accommodation: This type of support service is offered on a short-term basis (less than 2 years). Service users are supported to find other accommodation and to gain the skills necessary to maintain their own home.
Supported Housing: Supported housing provides accommodation for people with support needs with support being given by a Support Worker.
Back to the Content 3 Back To the directory of services Index Sheltered Housing: Sheltered housing primarily provides accommodation for older people who need some support. There will usually be a Scheme Manager to support service users and encourage social activities.
Community Alarm Service: A community alarm service provides emergency assistance via an alarm system situated in a service user’s home.
Support can include help with things like:
• Setting up and maintaining a home • Developing domestic/life skills • Developing social skills • Budgeting, finances and benefits claims • Access to other services • Personal safety and security
The above examples are just some of the things you can get help with but this is not an exhaustive list.

How do I apply for support?
There are a number of support providers within St.Helens and each of them will have their own access and application procedures. The support service information in this directory provides details on how to contact the organisations to gain further advice on how to apply for their service/s.
Some organisations may allow you to apply directly to them yourself whilst others may require you to be recommended by another agency such as Social Service Department, Housing Options Advice Service, Probation services or St.Helens Primary Care Trust. Please contact the organisation offering the type of support you need in order to obtain information on how to gain access to their services.
How long can I receive support?
Support can either be short-term or long-term.
Short Term Support: This type of service is intended to be for no more than 2 years. The aim of a short-term service is to help people become more independent in the two year period so that they will be able to live without the need for support, for example homeless hostels, refuges and floating support.
Long Term Support: This type of service is intended to be for more than 2 years or can be permanent, for example supported housing for older people.

How much will it cost?
Short-term support services are non-chargeable so there will be no cost to you for the support you receive.
Long-term support services are chargeable. When you make an application, the support provider will tell you the cost of the support charge.
If you receive Housing Benefit you will not have to pay the support charge. If you don’t receive housing benefit while using these types of services, you can ask for a Fairer Charging Assessment which may entitle you to have some or all of the cost subsidised by Supporting People.
