  • Colonel March of Scotland Yard Dave Mann, Independent Scholar, UK
Epicurean Disdain and the Rhetoric of Defiance: Colonel March of Scotland Yard Dave Mann, Independent Scholar, UK In the 1950s and early 1960s, the lower reaches of the British film industry underwent a profound transition -- it shifted from the production of programme fillers and supporting features to making TV/Film series (called telefilm in America). This transition has yet to undergo sustained critical scrutiny principally because this emergent form falls between two, compartmentalised, areas of scholarship -- Film Studies and Television Studies. Yet these early series are deserving of our attention because, firstly, they became a staple of the domestic film production and, secondly, because they articulate a series of complex ideological engagements. One of the most important of these dialogic exchanges was with the American television market. Primarily this was because British series could not recoup their costs by supplying the fledgling indigenous television sector alone and thus had to achieve American distribution. Far earlier than her British counterparts, the American arriviste Hannah Weinstein saw the potential for producing TV/Film series in Britain where production costs were significantly lower. She also recognised a shift in the American market from anthologies made up of discrete episodes drawing on a variety of genres and fronted by former Hollywood stars, such as the domestically-produced Douglas Fairbanks Presents (1953-56), to more economic series which exploited a regular cast and standard sets. To date, accounts of Weinstein's work focus on her role as head of Sapphire Films producing internationally successful swashbucklers beginning with The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-59; see Neale, 2003: 245-257 and 2005a: 73-87).

THE JOHN DICKSON CARR BIBLIOPHILE, No. 1. The Biblio-File series, No. J. Edited by Rick Sneary, 2962 Santa Ana Street, South Gate, Calif., for the August 1966 F.A.P.A. Mailing, and for others who have shown an interest in the works of John Dickson Carr. Thank and most of the credit for the original research on thia, project goes to James Wilson, Dave Hulan, Charlie Brown, and to Anthony Boucher for checking the list for errors. Thanks too, to Len Moffatt, for publishing assistance. Since 1930 John Dickson Carr has written something over 70 books, under his own name and that of his non-secret pen-name of Carter Dickson. He has collaborated on at least two hooks, and turned out numerous radio scripts, magazine short stories, articles and theater reviews. The following list of book titles is offered as an aid to collectors of Carr, in finding what they are missing, and to the chronological order of the series. Most of the Carr/Dickson stories fall into one of a number of series, and while it is not necessary that they be read in the order of their appearance, the development of the characters or the history is more orderly if they are. All books in a series are by one name, except as noted. Mr. Boucher notes that all the Carr titles have been originally published by Harper (later Harper & Row), qnd the Dickson by Morrow, excepting collaborations.. "How many authors have stayed with the same publisher for 36 years?" = It has been impossible to trace all the different pocketbook publications, but variant titles for British of pocketbook editions are given "(=...=)".

For some reason I intensely dislike spy novels perhaps because I intensely dislike war. But these are tales of jaunty crime sprees that generally only hurt other criminals not as clever as the saint. I suppose one reason I love them is that even with a pretty extensive vocabulary I need to keep using the marvelous system that comes with ebooks to look up words and their derivations. We walk back to the roundabout (WCs in the vicinity) then first left down Windsor Terrace towards the sea, crossing the road into Alexandra Park. There are panoramic views of the Bristol Channel as we make our way down towards the sea front past colourful ornamental gardens, leafy glades, a fishpond, aviary and the bandstand. ***Crossing Bridgeman Road we enter Windsor Gardens with more floral displays and sea views. Bordering the park are magnificent large town houses of local blue lias stone, once the homes of sea captains, coal magnates and businessmen: some have been converted to retirement homes. We exit onto Cliff Hill and cross the road onto Telegraph Way. This is a mile-long cliff-top path that leads to Lavernock Point. There is a plaque on the church wall to commemorate Marconi's first transmitted radio signal across open sea to the island of Flatholm, from here, on 13th May 1897.

  • 1 INTRODUCTION Charteris and His Work Every Year the UK Crime
1 INTRODUCTION Charteris and His Work Every year the UK Crime Writers' Association holds its prestigious “Diamond Dagger” ceremony. The Diamond Dagger is awarded annually to crime writers whose careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a significant contribution to crime fiction published in the English language. Winners have included Ian Rankin, Eric Ambler, John le Carré and Ruth Rendell. On 7 May 1992 the Chairman of the Association presented the Diamond Dagger to the 84-year old Leslie Charteris, whose fiction featuring the gentleman warrior, vigilante adventurer and modern knight-errant Simon Templar, known as the Saint, first appeared in 1928 and is still being published today. Outperforming both heroes and villains and a destroyer of society's enemies for decades, the central protagonist of Charteris’ twelve novels, thirty-four novellas and twelve volumes of short stories excelled in popularity. As Clive Bloom has warned, figures relating to book sales, at least in Britain, “must always be approached with considerable caution,”1 but based on known editions and reprints, publishers’ remarks and information from Charteris’ letters, it has been estimated that Charteris’ sales have topped forty million.2 While small in relation to the huge output and marketing of authors like the early twentieth-century thriller writer Edgar Wallace, or the famous Agatha Christie whose sales run into billions, Charteris’ sales record for his more modest output remains very substantial. Publication of his fiction tailed off in the 1980s, but from December 2012 Mulholland Books at Hodder and Stoughton commenced republication of thirty-five Saint titles.
