Descendants of Lewis Payton Grimes (1827-1891) Descendants of Lewis Payton Grimes (1827-1891) Descendants of Lewis Payton Grimes (1827-1891) Lewis Payton Grimes ,1 son of James William Grimes 2 and Nancy Jane Hart 2, was born on 25 Dec 1827 in Maury County, Tennessee, 3 died on 16 Jul 1891 in Moffat, Bell County, Texas 3 at age 63, and was buried in Moffat Cemetery, Moffat, Bell County, Texas. 4 General Notes: At the time of the 1850 census, Lewis was a farmer in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He had real estate valued at $400. The family moved to Texas between 1853 and 1855. At the time of the 1860 census, Lewis was farming in Bell County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $1100 and personal assets of $600. At the time of the 1870 census, Lewis was still farming in Bell County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $700 and personal assets of $1000. He was still farming in Bell County,Texas, at the time of the 1880 census. He farmed 62 acres and had 35 acres of woodland. His farm was valued at $1500. He had $100 in implements and $400 in live stock. His total production for the year was reported as $1348. He had 7 horses, 5 milk cows and 10 other animals. Their were 3 new calves. Two cows had been slaughtered. Three hundred pounds of butter had been made. He had 20 hogs, 20 barnyard poultry and 8 others. Egg production was 100. He had planted 28 acres of corn which produced 900 bushels, 2 acres of oats which produced 80 bushels. 15 acres of wheat which produced 150 bushels, 15 acres of cotton which produced 8 bales. In later census years, several of his children gave his birthplace as Mississippi. Noted events in his life were: • He served in the military as Lieutenant for the Confederacy in Arkansas and Louisiana during the Civil War. 5 Lewis married Amanda Caroline Hilliard 6 about 1847 in Mississippi. Amanda was born on 9 Nov 1828 in Mississippi,3 died on 6 Feb 1868 in Moffat, Bell County, Texas 3 at age 39, and was buried in Moffat Cemetery, Moffat, Bell County, Texas. 7 They had eight children: James Leonidas "Lon," Nancy Amanda, Sarah Pernecia "Sac," Louisa Jane "Jennie," William Alexander, Mary Caroline, Lewis Payton "Pate," and Thomas Edwin. James Leonidas "Lon" Grimes 8 was born on 25 Jul 1848 in Monroe County, Mississippi, 9 died on 25 Aug 1927 in Moffat, Bell County, Texas 9 at age 79, and was buried on 26 Aug 1927 in Moffat Cemetery, Moffat, Bell County, Texas. 10 The cause of his death was probably heart disease based on the symptoms he complained to his relatives about a few days preceeding death. 9 General Notes: At the time of the 1870 and 1880 census, James was farming in Bell County, Texas. In the 1900 and 1910 census, he indicated that he owned his farm in Bell County, Texas, free of any mortgage. It was listed as a general farm. By the time of the 1920 census, James had become widowed. He was listed with his son Thomas in Scurry County, Texas.
