Mendoza¨ Abstract: President Rodrigo Duterte has been consistent in his attacks against the Catholic Church. True to his campaign promise, he has unleashed his brutal “war on drugs” which has resulted to the deaths of thousands of suspected drug dependents and pushers. In response to his criticisms and the excesses of his anti-illegal drugs program, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has issued various pastoral statements in faithfulness to its mission. Nevertheless, the majority of Filipinos continue to support Duterte and his anti-illegal drugs stance. In this context, the call of Pope Francis’ for the church to become a “field hospital” becomes all the more pastorally relevant. Keywords: War on drugs • Catholic Church • Field hospital • Human rights • President Rodrigo Duterte • Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Introduction The Philippines has never had a chief executive in its history who has had no qualms in attacking the church and who in the process has not lost any political capital. ¨ Dr. Ruben C. Soc calls priests to be ‘real witnesses amid threats By Roy Lagarde PRIESTS are called to face “these dreary times of darkness” by being “real witnesses” amid “an angry disbelieving society,” a church official said on Holy Thursday. Those priests, said Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen- Dagupan, should also not be afraid to die or be killed for the Lord. “Brother priests, make friends with death. Let death not threaten you,” Villegas said in his Chrism Mass homily at the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Dagupan City. “The call to the priesthood is a call to die. It is clear. There is no priesthood without victimhood,” he said. To drive his point, the archbishop said that there’s nothing surprising with priests being threatened with death. In the first place, he said that priests should not have accepted ordination if they were afraid to die or be killed. “Death is not a threat. It is our destiny,” said Villegas, who is also a former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. CBCP MARCH 16 - 29, 2020, VOL 24, NO. 6 [email protected] PROTAGONIST OF TRUTH, PROMOTER OF PEACE Several dioceses suspend Masses due to coronavirus By Roy Lagarde A RISING number of dioceses in the Philippines are making changes in response to the coronavirus outbreak, including a decision by bishops to suspend Masses. The first to make the move were the bishops of Metro Manila, where majority of the confirmed cases of the COVID1-19 are recorded. In a statement, the bishops of Manila, Cubao, Kalookan, Pasig, Novaliches, Parañaque, Antipolo, Malolos and the military ordinariate have released a unified response to the pandemic. “We will abide by the government’s directive to suspend all large gatherings from March 15 to April 14,” part of the letter, issued on March 16, read. This means, according to them, that there will be no public Masses and other religious activities within the said period, including the Holy Week. • No to Kaliwa Dam, Yes to Alternative Sources of Water
Roman Catholic Prelate of Infanta 48-A Plaridel St., Poblacion 38 Infanta, Quezon 4336 Philippines NO TO KALIWA DAM, YES TO ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF WATER “In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone, for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward. Praise be to him!” (Laudato Si, 245) Our country has been blessed by God with an abundance of natural resources especially water, but for many factors, we are now faced with the concrete reality of managing our water especially for the next generation. After listening to the strong opposition to the construction of the New Centennial Water Source Kaliwa Dam Project, we too express our opposition to the said project and strongly recommend to look for alternative sources to the Kaliwa Dam for the following reasons: 1. It will inundate the ancestral domain of the Dumagat-Remontados, uprooting them from the Sierra Madre where their ancestors lived for centuries enjoying a symbiotic relationship with the earth like the children to their mother. Undeniably, until now the indigenous people have not given an FPIC (Free Prior and Informed Consent) to the Kaliwa dam project as required by R.A. 8371. 2. Kaliwa dam to be constructed over the Infanta Fault will be a “sword hanging over the head” of 100,000 people living downstream the Kaliwa River. Etched in their memory is the 2004 flash flood that left 1,000 killed and over million worth of properties destroyed.
