Call / A6 CBCP prexy scores slow response to killer flood By Roy Lagarde THE head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines expressed his frustration with the pace of relief efforts in the typhoon-devastated Luzon region. Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said he can’t but register his deep concern at the unacceptably slow response to the grave hu- manitarian crisis. He said “depletion” of the government’s resources might have triggered the “slowness” in responding to the victims of the strong typhoon. What the church leader fear the most, he admitted, is the misap- propriation of resources set aside for responding calamities. “If there were no graft and corruption in our government, our government would be more prepared to respond to such crisis,” Lagdameo said. Survivors are angry at the lack of aid. Some of them reported that they were trapped inside their homes or on the rooftops but were ignored by rescue helicopters flying overhead. Countless people were dismayed by the government’s failure to come to their aid at the height of the massive floods that swept Metro Manila and nearby provinces over the weekend. Record breaking Massive flash floods unleashed by Typhoon Ondoy swept across Metro Manila and nearby provinces on Sept. 26 killing over 200 people and stranding hundreds on roof tops. Ondoy is the latest example of how class inequalities are exposed to natural disasters. It did not spare anyone, rich or poor. In reading the reports of the various CIB regions contained in these pages, I have seen some common issues that seem to bind us together in this. First and foremost, we can see that this time has been both a challenge and a blessing for us. There have been unexpected benefits for our monastic communities even as we have experienced many undesired limitations and some fear, as well as sickness and death (both in our communities and in our families).

‘It seems life no longer has any value nowadays’ Church starts days of prayer against ‘blasphemers, murderers’ in nationwide gatherings 05:18 AM July 18, 2018 Church people light candles during a gathering in Manila to pray for an end to killings. —GRIG C. MONTEGRANDE Leaders of the Catholic Church on Monday presided over a thinly veiled counterattack against President Rodrigo Duterte’s assaults on the country’s most dominant religion and God himself, marking the start of days of prayer for protection against what a Church statement said were blasphemers and murderers. In Baguio City, at least 800 bishops and priests from parishes in Northern Luzon gathered for a weeklong retreat in response to a call made by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) to storm the heavens with prayers to end attacks on the Church and a cycle of violence that has alarmed many. Vatican represented This was the first time in decades that dioceses in Northern Luzon held a retreat together, said Fr. Oliver Mendoza, rector of Mary Help of Christian Theology Seminary in San Fabian town, Pangasinan province. The retreat at the Baguio Cathedral would run until July 20 and would be attended by the papal nuncio, or Vatican ambassador to the Philippines, Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia. They were expected to fast and give alms from July 17 to 19. Mendoza said the retreat would also commemorate the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons. “They will offer prayers and penance for the sins of murder, blasphemy and sacrilege,” said Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

  • Spiritual Rest
Spiritual Rest Our Eternal Father is infinite awareness, and in special moments of grace, we are enabled to experience heightened awareness states while infused by His infinite Bliss. —Doug Norkum ANOTHER LUNCHEON On Wednesday, September 9, 2015 around noon I had invited my friend Jack Manion to my home for soup, coffee and a hot pork tenderloin sandwich. In a recent e-mail Jack reflected, “While visiting Doug Norkum at his home when the thought entered my head, whether of my own volition or not I cannot say, to ask Doug, “What happens when a person falls in the spirit?,” and then to let him talk without interruption This I did..” I was not sure how to answer the question as the process is a mystery, as are so many other aspects of our infinite Creator’s gifts. However, first I would try to answer from within my own experience. I have been to several Roman Catholic healing masses at various churches, but mainly at St. Mary’ Cathedral here in Kingston, Ontario. Watching Bill Reason, I learned a technique for catching and lowering people who fell in the Spirit— usually after a priest prayed for them and while gently touched their shoulder or forehead. As a “catcher,” I too would experience the flow of Bliss passing from the priest to the participant much in the form of a “bubble” or infusion of God’s presence. I do remember catching Claire Roeder, now passed on, several times in which she gently floated, much like a very light feather, backwards into my awaiting hands guiding her to the floor.
