Several Dioceses Suspend Masses Due to Coronavirus CBCP MARCH 16 - 29, 2020, VOL 24, NO. 6 [email protected] PROTAGONIST OF TRUTH, PROMOTER OF PEACE Several dioceses suspend Masses due to coronavirus By Roy Lagarde A RISING number of dioceses in the Philippines are making changes in response to the coronavirus outbreak, including a decision by bishops to suspend Masses. The first to make the move were the bishops of Metro Manila, where majority of the confirmed cases of the COVID1-19 are recorded. In a statement, the bishops of Manila, Cubao, Kalookan, Pasig, Novaliches, Parañaque, Antipolo, Malolos and the military ordinariate have released a unified response to the pandemic. “We will abide by the government’s directive to suspend all large gatherings from March 15 to April 14,” part of the letter, issued on March 16, read. This means, according to them, that there will be no public Masses and other religious activities within the said period, including the Holy Week. In reading the reports of the various CIB regions contained in these pages, I have seen some common issues that seem to bind us together in this. First and foremost, we can see that this time has been both a challenge and a blessing for us. There have been unexpected benefits for our monastic communities even as we have experienced many undesired limitations and some fear, as well as sickness and death (both in our communities and in our families).

We should be proud that we were able to support our seminarians who are now priests. On that same Saturday, Reverend Jonathan Michael Demma celebrated his first mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton’s Catholic Church. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend I did however attend Reverend Maurice Lawrence Moon’s first mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsey, Texas on Sunday, May 20, 2018. I am happy to report that we had a strong showing of Knights with the District Master Pat Conway leading our honor guard. My prayer is that we are able to have all of our future seminarians go on to become priests. I would also like to congratulate SK George Webster with an Honorary 4th Degree Life Membership. He is the the Fort Worth Diocese Wheelchair Chairman and is very active with his council.
