Researching Candidates' Use of Twitter During the European Parliamentary Elections 11 Hailed by many as a game-changer in political communication, Twitter has made its way into election campaigns all around the world. The European Parliamentary elections, tak- ing place simultaneously in 28 countries, give us a unique comparative vision of the way the tool is used by candidates in different national contexts. This volume is the fruit of a research project bringing together scholars from 6 countries, specialised in communication science, media studies, linguistics and computer science. It seeks to characterise the way Twitter was used during the 2014 European election campaign, providing insights into communication styles and strategies observed in different languages and outlining meth- odological solutions for collecting and analysing political tweets in an electoral context. Vargo: Brand Messages On Twitter: Predicting Diffusion With Textual Characteristics (Under the direction of Joe Bob Hester) This dissertation assesses brand messages (i.e. tweets by a brand) on Twitter and the characteristics that predict the amount of engagement (a.k.a. interaction) a tweet receives. Attention is given to theories that speak to characteristics observable in text and how those characteristics affect retweet and favorite counts. Three key concepts include sentiment, arousal and concreteness. For positive sentiment, messages appeared overly positive, but still a small amount of the variance in favorites was explained. Very few tweets had strong levels of arousal, but positive arousal still explained a small amount of the variance in retweet counts. Despite research suggesting that concreteness would boost sharing and interest, concrete tweets were retweeted and shared less than vague tweets. Vagueness explained a small amount of the variance in retweet and favorite counts. The presence of hashtags and images boosted retweet and favorite counts, and also explained variance.     COMPLAINT: COVERAGE BY “TODAY”, SINCE THE WILSON REPORT, OF THE CASE FOR THE UK TO WITHDRAW FROM THE EU. BACKGROUND The 2005 Wilson Report into the BBC’s coverage of EU affairs was the Corporation’s first published independent analysis of its output. Its committee of inquiry was chaired by Lord Wilson of Dinton, formerly Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service. This complaint is that the BBC has not delivered the improvements it promised in its response to that report, of its coverage of EU affairs. This applies particularly to the debate about the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The Wilson Report was published in January 2005. It was critical of parts of the relevant output. It said: …we do think there is a serious problem. Although the BBC wishes to be impartial in its news coverage of the EU it is not succeeding. Whatever the intention, nobody thinks the outcome is impartial. There is strong disagreement about the net balance but all parties show remarkable unity in identifying the elements of the problem. Sometimes being attacked from all sides is a sign that an organisation is getting it right. That is not so here. It is a sign that the BBC is getting it wrong, and our main conclusion is that urgent action is required to put this right. The problem can be summarised under a number of headings which we analyse below.1 Institutional mindset. ABSTRACT OF THESIS “WHAT’S HAPPENING” @TWITTER: A USES AND GRATIFICATIONS APPROACH The uses and gratifications approach places power in the hands of the audience and is a helpful perspective when trying to understand media usage, exposure, and effects. However, while the uses and gratifications approach has been applied regularly to traditional media, research explaining why people use new social media networks as well as the gratifications they obtain from them is scarce at best. This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the uses and gratifications approach as well as the current literature about social media networks. An argument is built within the thesis to study Twitter as one social media network through the uses and gratifications theoretical lens. Research questions are provided and a survey of 216 college undergraduates was conducted. Results show that people use a variety of Twitter functions, that the gratifications sought from Twitter are not the gratifications obtained from Twitter, and that people are careful about the types of information they share on the social media network.
