When they come, however, they bring dire news: one of their own has escaped into the Deep Roads and aligned himself with their ancient enemy, the monstrous darkspawn. The Grey Wardens need Marics help, and he reluctantly agrees to lead them into the passages he traveled through many years before, chasing after a deadly secret that will threaten to destroy not only the Grey Wardens but also the Kingdom above. While A Stolen Throne was nothing if not unremarkable, The Calling came in as a fantastic fantasy novel. While it suffers from the limitations of all fantasy novels (reasonably predictable characters), we not only get to see some deep insight into the icons of the Dragon Age universe (Fiona, Duncan, The Architect), and we get to connect with them on a pretty personal level. The character development for Non Player Characters in the video games aside, we get to see a sullen King Maric again, as well as a typically pissy Loghain before we delve deep into the action. While A Stolen Throne was an origins story for King Maric and the Ferelden world we know, The Calling doesnt waste any time introducing us to the universe or its characters, but instead builds the world as it was meant to be built: Massive and foreboding. In particular, we gain a lot of insight into the way the blight operates, how the taint the Gray Wardens consume during The Joining leads them to nearly become Darkspawn themselves, and we finally get a feel for The Deep Roads. Unfortunately, in both A Stolen Throne and all three installments of Dragon Age video games, the Deep Roads never comes off as a war torn environment. Sure, there are bad things down there, and we get a few glimpses of the haste in which the dwarves left their kingdom, but it never really sinks in.Davids writing here really strikes those points home. Marics (et al) journey into the Deep Roads is done with apprehension (not profit, as was the case in Dragon Age II) and the reader is left with nothing but a sense of fear, dread, and impending doom. We truly get to see the Darkspawn for what they are: The stuff of nightmares. Not the inconvenient things you kill to get a few silvers. This atmosphere is built throughout the entire novel as David captures the essence of Dragon Age better than many parts of the game franchise. • Dragon Age Origins a Look at Character Consistency and Complexity Through Dialogues
Dragon Age Origins A look at character consistency and complexity through dialogues Linus Nilsson Degree project in game design Game design and programming spring 2013 Supervisors: Jakob Rogert-Berglund and Hedda Gunneng Examiner: Special thanks to Madeline and Larry Danice and John Abstract This paper takes a look at two non-player characters in the game Dragon Age Origins and analyzes if their dialogues spoken are contributing to making the characters examined complex and also seeing if the dialogues spoken on a specific topic are being consistent. That the characters are having the same view on the topic does not matter to any other non-player characters to whom they speak. Thirty dialogues are being analyzed. Fifteen of them are delivered by the character Alistair and the other fifteen by the character Leliana. As an analyzing tool, Paul Grice's maxim of quantity and maxim of manner has been used. The conclusion suggests how Paul Grice's maxims could be used as a helping tool when writing dialogue for games. Playing with Consent: An Autoethnographic Analysis of Representations of Race, Rape, and Colonialism in BioWare’s Dragon Age by Jocelyn Beyer A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Digital Humanities - Anthropology Digital Humanities University of Alberta © Jocelyn Beyer, 2019 Abstract In this thesis I analyse BioWare’s Dragon Age series of video games using a modified autoethnographic method and Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology to explore how rape and consent are represented within the games. I find that the player embodies three roles throughout the games in relation to sexual assault – victim, justice, and rapist – and I dedicate a chapter to exploring each in detail. I analyse the games using my own experiences to explore how the player is an embodied subject with an orientation. I also explore the idea that video games are a form of virtual tourism, and that some in-game relationships available to the player are similar to sex and romance tourism. ii Acknowledgements Writing a thesis is hard and awful, though that could just be the coffee and sleep deprivation talking, and I could not have done it without the help of a large group of people. Thank you to my supervisor, Kathleen Lowrey, for all of your help and advice from the very beginning of my grad school journey to the very last days of the writing process. I would also like to thank Astrid Ensslin for all of your hard work and dedication getting this thesis written and ready to go. • Gay Engines: Imagining a Queer Development Platform for Video
Gay Engines: Imagining a Queer Development Platform for Video Games Cass Zegura MCM 1990: Honors Thesis/Project in Modern Culture and Media April 5, 2020 1 Preface The story of this project begins in the fall of 2017, at a crowded tapas bar in downtown Providence. My aunt and uncle, who live in Boston, had come down to visit and take me out to dinner. It was a perfectly ordinary night except in one regard: when I told my aunt and uncle about the classes I was taking that semester, a strange look crossed their faces. I thought the source of their confusion might be the computer science course I had mentioned, an upper-level design class called Independent Study in 2D Game Engines. I assumed that they, like I, had never heard of the term “game engine” before and thus did not know what it was. And as I launched into my explanation (which I won’t repeat here—I’ve already written an entire chapter dedicated to this question), the confusion diminished, but only somewhat, and we soon changed subjects. On a phone call with my mom a few days later, I learned the true source of my aunt and uncle’s befuddlement. In that noisy restaurant, the word “game” had transformed into the word “gay.” They thought that I was taking a class on 2D gay engines. No wonder they were confused! I would’ve been too. What the heck is a gay engine anyway? Of course, I didn’t know then that I was going to spend my senior year trying to answer that question.

The number, and perhaps more importantly the depiction, of these characters has given rise to a search for proto-feminism in tragedy, with Euripides as an especially prominent target.

So freaking good!By Hayley CorbinThe art is flawless - truly some of the best I've seen for a comic in a long time, with each panel almost like a painting unto itself. A hand full of fan- favorite characters is back, as well as some great new ones (I especially loved Yavana and Maevaris, and hope they show up more in later Dragon Age content). The search for King Maric is wonderfully frustrating and the pay-off is absolutely insane! It was so amazing, it left me a slack-jawed. All the 'villains' are just the right amount of crazy and relatable - and some of the things we learn about the main characters leave us wondering exactly how much the 'good guys' they actually are.

  • Game Narrative Review
Game Narrative Review ==================== Game Title: Dragon Age Platform: PC, and Xbox 360 Genre: RPG Release Date: November 3, 2009 Developer: Bioware Publisher: Electronic Arts Game Writer: David Gaider Author of this review: Patrick Moates School:Guild Hall at SMU Overview Dragon Age Origins is the original IP produced by Bioware, and published by EA. Dragon Age’s world of Thedeas is a dark, violent, medieval styled, fantasy world that periodically falls under the vast and looming threat of the Blight. The Blight heralds the return of an Archdemon accompanied by vast hordes of monsters known as Darkspawn. In this world only an order of men and women known as the Grey Wardens, stand between the Blight and the rest of the world. After being torn from the only life he has ever known, and suffering a terrible defeat at the hands of the Darkspawn, the player and his allies are the only things that stand between the world and the Blight. The progression of the game occurs under the shadow of the Blight’s strengthening influence, and even on the map, the dark area spreads as a constant reminder of the overwhelming threat. The combat and gameplay is familiar to anyone who has played some of Bioware’s other titles. Combat is reminiscent of Neverwinter Nights and more distantly Baulder’s Gate. The dialogue options run more akin to Mass Effect in terms of variety. Establishing origins for the player characters allows for the existence of limited “touchstone” characters connecting the player to their individual narrative. Characters • Player Character – A newly initiated Grey Warden; Regardless of the player’s chosen origin, the player loses the old life he possessed for a second chance as a Grey Warden.
