[ 4 ] @NAFISschools | #ImpactAid | facebook.com/nafisschools | linkedin.com/nafisschools Dear Conference Attendee: Welcome to the 2018 NAFIS Fall Conference! We all understand how quickly time passes, and my time serving as the President of the NAFIS Board of Directors is no exception. I began my second year as President in July, and I look forward to the activities ahead. I also thank Executive Director Hilary Goldmann and her staff, along with the entire NAFIS Board of Directors. Rest assured that this team of professionals is doing great work. The NAFIS Family continues to work relentlessly to protect and strengthen the Impact Aid program. Earlier this year, Impact Aid was under threat. Legislation to redirect its funding towards private school vouchers was proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives, and pro-voucher forces worked behind the scenes to advance the legislation. Thanks to the efforts of the NAFIS Family, along with our partner organizations and our congressional champions (some of whom we will honor with a special awards ceremony on Capitol Hill later this week), that policy has been defeated—for now. Given this recent threat and how we overcame it, as well as the potential for it to be renewed in the coming legislative session, I cannot think of a more appropriate theme for this conference than “Facing Adversity: Stronger Together.” Throughout the conference, you will learn about the current state of the Impact Aid program and issues impacting its future. Also important are opportunities the conference offers for you to connect with other members of the NAFIS Family. I believe that building relationships with your NAFIS colleagues is critical to the future of the Impact Aid program. As we face new challenges, we must all work together to ensure that we share a common message on its future. To this end, our Opening General Session will feature opportunities to interact directly with other attendees, sharing your perspective and expertise while also learning from others. There will be chances to connect informally as well. For example, Monday night before you head to dinner, join NAFIS Executive Director Hilary Goldmann and other attendees for a walk on the National Mall, getting in your steps while enjoying fresh air and conversation after a long day of meetings. On Sunday and Monday, stop by “Paint for a Cause” to contribute to a group project for a community organization, meeting other NAFIS members while letting your artistic side shine. And be sure to come to the closing reception Tuesday night, which features a County Fair theme. As always, the conference will culminate with a day on Capitol Hill, where we will advocate for Impact Aid directly with our elected representatives and their staff. It will be an exciting few days. I am confident that your participation in this conference will strengthen the Impact Aid community and the program we all serve. As leaders, our responsibility is to ensure the students we serve have access to a great education, financed by the resources they deserve. It is a privilege and honor to work with you. Thank you for your commitment to Impact Aid and for your presence here in Washington, DC. We truly are Stronger Together. Sincerely, James Sarruda NAFIS President [ 5 ] Facing Adversity: Stronger Together | 2018 NAFIS Fall Conference Dear Conference Attendee: Every organization has a unique culture. At NAFIS, ours includes a dedication to unity, meaning all members of the Impact Aid community—as diverse as we are—speak with one voice. We recognize this culture of unity makes us more effective. In essence, the NAFIS Family knows we are “Stronger Together”—the theme of the 2018 Fall Conference. Many in the NAFIS family note their connection to NAFIS by the number of conferences attended; I have attended six—a relative newbie, I know! From the vantage point of Executive Director, I have made many observations at these events. Attendees are here to work hard, and they take their role as advocates for Impact Aid and their students very seriously. In addition to advocating for Impact Aid, they come to learn about other education policy issues and programmatic ideas to implement when they return to their districts. I also notice the hugs people give each other in the hallways of the Hyatt and that this—the conference—is a place people come on a regular basis to reconnect and strengthen friendships. One of the wonderful aspects of the NAFIS Family is that we develop caring relationships and become part of each other’s lives. But I have also observed that many of us are so comfortable that we can get in a bit of a rut at these conferences. Attendees often sit with the same people, at the same table, and sometimes even in the same chair, at conference after conference. Members of subgroups, school district representatives, old timers and regions stay in their own lanes, and we don’t cross these lanes very often. Unity as an organizational culture doesn’t just happen. We need to intentionally work on being and staying unified. To maintain and improve this important characteristic of the NAFIS culture, we need to know each other as individuals. We also need to know about each other’s school districts, the children we educate and the communities we serve. Another observation: much of the NAFIS conference is learning through a lecture format, with not enough opportunities for you—a group of education leaders—to take advantage of the brain power in the room in a way that provides a more engaging experience. Based on the importance of getting to know one another, as well as feedback from conference surveys, we are reimagining the Fall Conference First General Session. This session will include opportunities for participants to drive the conversation, share their expertise with each other and make new connections as we strengthen the NAFIS Family. In addition, the conference will feature a number of new ways for attendees to form new relationships and share your voice, helping the NAFIS Family to truly become “Stronger Together” in both formal and casual settings. Our other programming will maintain the high-quality speakers and emphasis on important topics that attendees have come to expect. Our headline luncheon speakers, renowned Democrat and Republican election pollsters, will offer an up-to- the-minute look at the upcoming mid-term elections. And during the Second General Session, two prominent speakers will address school safety—an issue in the headlines and on the minds of every district leader as we head back to school. Your voice makes a difference in the halls of Congress and as an engaged member of the NAFIS Family. As you plan your trip to DC,
