Olszewski Published online: 13 March 2007 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2007 Abstract The example of Singapore shows that rapid urban and economic growth does not have to bring traffic congestion and pollution. Singapore has chosen to restrain car traffic demand due to its limited land supply. Transport policy based on balanced development of road and transit infrastructure and restraint of traffic has been consistently implemented for the past 30 years. Combined with land use planning, it resulted in a modern transport system, which is free from major con- gestion and provides users with different travel alternatives. As the economic growth caused a substantial increase in demand for cars, several pricing policies were introduced with the aim of restraining car ownership and usage. Growth of the vehicle population is now controlled and potentially congested roads are subject to road pricing. These measures help to keep the roads free from major congestion, maintain car share of work trips below 25% and keep the transport energy usage low. Although Singapore conditions are in many aspects unique, its travel demand experience can provide useful lessons for other rapidly growing cities in Asia. SMRT Corporation Ltd 251 North Bridge Road Singapore 179102 Tel : 65 6331 1000 Fax : 65 6339 4229 www.smrt.com.sg 25 July 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SMRT encourages good travel etiquette with introduction Media Release of Care Stickers and Priority Queues As part of SMRT’s on-going effort to enhance commuter experience touch-points and encourage good travel etiquette, SMRT Trains and SMRT Buses will make available special Care Stickers for five groups of commuters who might require special care and attention: expectant mothers, senior citizens, parents travelling with infants, commuters with mobility needs and unwell passengers. Selected train stations will also see a new Priority Queue, to ensure that passengers in need are able to enjoy lift facilities more easily. Care Stickers to Encourage Good Travel Etiquette “Our bus and train services carry over 2.5million commuters every day and among them are some who might need some extra care. While passengers are generally courteous and are willing to offer seats to those in need, we feel that a sticker could help commuters identify and extend care more easily, particularly to expectant mothers, senior citizens, parents travelling with infants, commuters with mobility needs and unwell passengers” said Mr. Alvin Kek, Vice President, Rail Operations, SMRT Trains. He added that “the stickers will help us all ensure that we can easily spot passengers in need. But we do also hope that commuters will continue to extend care to others in need even if they are not wearing a care sticker.” Commuters may approach staff at all SMRT Passenger Service Centres along the North-South East-West and Circle Lines, and SMRT Bus Interchanges (Bukit Batok, Choa Chu Kang, Sembawang, Woodlands and Yishun) for a Care Sticker that corresponds with their special needs.
