Patrol= in Control in Arlington Million Xxxv SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 2017 >PATROL= IN CONTROL IN STRONG OPENER TO FASIG-TIPTON NEW YORK SALE by Jessica Martini ARLINGTON MILLION XXXV SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Bidding remained fast and furious in Saratoga, as the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale, held just three days after a record-setting Saratoga Selected Yearlings Sale, opened Saturday evening in the Humphrey Finney Pavilion. AWe hit the trifecta again tonight from a sales perspective,@ said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. AThe average was up, the median was up and the RNA rate was down. I think we saw a continuation of the same trends from the select sale earlier in the week.@ During Saturday=s session, 93 yearlings sold for $8,155,000. The average of $75,000 was up 13.5% from last year=s sale average of $77,246. The median rose 25% to $60,000. The buy- back rate was 24.4%. Favored Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who sidestepped a possible matchup with Beach Patrol in last year=s Secretariat and was instead a game third against his elders in this race, could not capitalize on an ideal trip and rounded out the trifecta for the second straight year. It was a stakes double for Head of Plains Partners= LLC Sol Kumin, who also races GI Beverly D. S. winner Dacita (Chi) (Scat Daddy) in partnership. AThis was the spot and the race we=ve been waiting for a year,@ said Kumin, who campaigns Beach Patrol with Jim Covello and Sheep Pond Partners. AHe loves it here, Joel gave us a great ride, obviously Chad and his team had the horse ready and we=re super happy. It=s funny I=ve seen the trophy and Chad always talked about this is the best trophy in horse racing. It doesn=t get much better than this.@ Brown, who saddled Real Solution (Kitten=s Joy) to win the 2013 Million via DQ, joins his mentor Bobby Frankel--among others--as two-time winners of the race. Cont. p3 Oscar Performance winning the Secretariat S.(G1) at Arlington. World Class Performance Amerman Racing’s three year old homebred Oscar Performance, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) last season, lands his third straight stakes of the year and third career Grade 1 victory. The win against a world class field which included three starters from Europe, establishes him as a leading candidate for the Eclipse Award in his division and advanced his earnings to $1,737,632. The Secretariat S. (G1) was won by both Kitten’s Joy and Admiral’s Kitten. 6915 Harrodsburg Road | Nicholasville, KY 40356 (859) 887-3200 | Fax: (859) 885-2666 | www.ramseyfarm.com LGB, LLC 2017 / Photo: Four Footed Photo PRESIDENT & CO-PUBLISHER Barry Weisbord @barryweisbord [email protected] SR. Alphabet Soup Fraise Amazombie Gulch Black Tie Affair Little Mike Cajun Beat Precisionist Eldaafer Prized 1996 Breeders’’ Cup Classic Winner AAllpphhaabbeett SSoouupp OFFICIAL 2016 OLD FRIENDS BREEDERS’ CUP PROGRAM Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing —the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Af fair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Classic winner Alphabet Soup (1996), Turf winner Little Mike (2012), Sprint winner Amazombie (2011), Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way, Touch Gold, and Game on Dude.

Biographical Note Richard Stone Reeves was a prolific equine artist, painting portraits of approximately 1,000 race horses over the course of his long career. He was born in New York City in 1919 and was raised on Long Island, close to Belmont Park where he enjoyed spending time in his youth. From an early age, Reeves knew he wanted to combine his love for art with his interest in horses and racing. He attended Syracuse University and graduated in 1941 with a degree in Fine Arts. Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Reeves enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent his first two years in the Navy working in the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington and then volunteered for a combat mission in China where he spent 1944 and 1945. A chance meeting with Lt. Commander Robert G. Johnson in China would give Reeves the start to his career as an equine painter. Johnson happened to be the president of Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island and admired the sketches and paintings Reeves created in his free time. He learned that Reeves’ ambition was to paint racehorses, and after the war was over, Johnson commissioned Reeves to portray six champion horses for the Roosevelt Raceway. Reeves was then commissioned by the Daily Racing Form to paint Armed, the 1947 Horse of the Year.
