Completed Tree ofLife 126 MY LIFE WITH THE RABBI By Rodney Orpheus et me begin by saying that no matter what Mr. DuQuette may L be obliged to say in his introductory words, Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford is (was) real. I, perhaps more than anyone else on Earth, understand the author's reasons for choosing to infer that the text rep resents a pseudepigraphic effort of his own. To men and women of integrity, a spiritual oath of secrecyis a serious and burdensome com mitment, and Mr. DuQuette, by means ofthis elaborate literary cha rade, has obviously fulfilled his obligations admirably. I, on the other hand, am bound by no such covenants, and because I, too, am com piling a record of the events of my life with the Master, I am grateful to Mr. DuQuette for allowing me to share some of my memories. It was a wet and stormy night when first I met the Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford. I was a young chela of an occult Order then attending initiations in A....., a beautiful old German town. I remember the moment distinctly. I was standing on a stack of chairs wielding a huge Japanese katana, swinging it round with ease to impress the assembled neophytes with my skill in the oriental arts, when I was approached by a rotund figure, his beard wafting in the breeze from my blade. "Little Brother!" he commanded me in a loud voice, "You have been meddling with the Qabalah!" The throng around me seemed to shrink away at his imperious, if somewhat squeaky, voice. I stood transfixed by his gaze, the sword held high above my head. For a long second, there was no sound. xu / FOREWORD FOREWORD / xtu "No I haven't," I stated calmly, "But I don't mind having it med Master Builders of old, whose pride led Jehovah to punish them for dle with me." daring to come before His Countenance. Thus the Order members He looked at me quizzically, seeming to examine my face intent vow themselves to complete anonymity on their initiation, so that ly, then turned on his heel and walked away. In my mind I had a sud the Lord cannot find and punish them for their spiritual hubris. Now den flash of insight. I leapt down from my post and ran after him, I understood why the Rabbi, although versed in the wisdom of the throwing myself at his feet. Holy Qabalah like no man in this century, had published nothing; "M I" I I' d I: aster. exc arrne ,lOr I now knew I was in the presence ofa indeed his name was unknown even in the occult circles in which I member of that mystical, mythical Great White Brotherhood I had had previously moved. sought for so long, "Take me as your pupil-please!" I was to become one of the lucky few intimates of the Rabbi dur "I can't do that," he said, "The Qabalah is not for charismatic ing my stay. His spiritual communications were no less intriguing-he spoke "Well, pop by the house the next time you are in the States, we'll frequently to Goetic spirits and Enochian angels, often over after see what we have for you!" His eyes twinkled. I knew I'd been given noon tea (Earl Grey seemed especially efficacious for this purpose). I a challenge. • Winter Solstice 2019 Volume 39 Number 4
WINTER SOLSTICE 2019 VOLUME 39 NUMBER 4 Established by Dion Fortune in 19 22 Dear Subscribers and Readers, When I volunteered to take on the running of this journal it was my hope that by changing its appearance, and through many other activities, that I would be able to increase sales, and that we would have more writers wanting us to publish their work. Sadly, after several years this has not happened, despite much personal effort. The competition with online platforms and the demands of the world has changed the playing field, making it difficult for any ‘not for profit’ magazine. Not to mention the increasing cost of mailing out the journal. Therefore, we have had to take the difficult decision to cut our loses and cease production of this journal. Consequently, this is the last edition. We will be using the website of The Society of the Inner Light to regularly publish works by Dion Fortune and others in the founding group, that may not have been seen before. We will also be producing works with commentaries with the aim of making them current for the readership. We hope that you will find something of interest on this website. If you are a subscriber and would like a refund in regard to any outstanding remittance please contact the SIL administration office, and we will be happy to reimburse you. Equally you may choose to make your outstanding subscription a charitable donation, for which we thank you. Thank you for your support of this publication over the many years. Regards Christian 1 It is that time of year for celebration, and in the life.

Born Edward Alexander Crowley 12 October 1875 Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England Died 1 December 1947 (aged 72) Hastings, East Sussex, England Occupation Occultist, poet, novelist Spouse(s) Rose Edith Kelly Parents Edward Crowley, Emily Bertha Crowley (neé Bishop) Aleister Crowley (/ˈkroʊli/ KROH-lee; 12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947), born Edward Alexander Crowley, and also known as both Frater Perdurabo and The Great Beast 666, was an English occultist, mystic, ceremonial magician, poet and mountaineer, who was responsible for founding the religious philosophy of Thelema. In his role as the founder of the Thelemite philosophy, he came to see himself as the prophet who was entrusted with informing humanity that it was entering the new Aeon of Horus in the early 20th century. Born into a wealthy upper-class family, as a young man he became a member of the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Subsequently he claimed that he was contacted by his Holy Guardian Angel, an entity he named Aiwass, while staying in Egypt in 1904, and that he 'received' a text known as The Book of the Law from what he claimed was a divine source, and around which he would come to develop his new philosophy of Thelema. He would go on to found his own occult society, the A∴A∴ and eventually rose to become a leader of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), before founding a religious commune in Cefalù known as the Abbey of Thelema, which he led from 1920 until 1923.

Three hundred years earlier, when occultism and science ± or natural philosophy, as it was then called ± were linked rather than separate, the enthusiasm of the Inquisition had forced the occult underground. For all intents and purposes, the subsequent death of religion left the mechanistic worldview of mainstream science isolated, and skeptical, if not dismissive, of the occult, its introspective and ©metaphysical©* counterpart. Ironically, since its resurfacing in the age of modernity, science and skepticism have served not only as an opponent but as a ©spiritual© tool in the development of occultism. The initial revival of occult science, in its popular expression, took place around the fin de siecle of the late 19th to the early 20th century. Aleister Crowley, also known as ªThe Great Beast 666º (To Mega Therion in Greek), seems to be one of the most lasting influences from the first wave. His wealth, elitism and influential personality enabled him to test the cultural boundaries of his era in many parts of the world, gaining both fame and infamy wherever he went. In a 2002 BBC poll for The Greatest Briton, Crowley was voted 73rd out of a hundred, between King Henry V and Robert Bruce.1 Similarly, the London Times in 1969 cited Crowley as ªone of the 1000 Makers of the Twentieth Century.º2 As an occultist and magician, Crowley furiously attacked religious dogmatism and instead employed the scientific method3 as a tool for exploration of the Self ± albeit in a different formulation than that of a Freud or a Krafft-Ebing.
