When it comes to fun, family-friendly sports games Wii Sports is probably the first thing that jumps to mind. Originally released along with the Nintendo Wii, the game disc came included in the box with every Nintendo Wii unit. Thanks to this, it quickly became the best-selling game ever on a single platform. It's not a complex game, nor is it really deep, but it was an excellent way to show just how fun and family-friendly the Nintendo Wii was set to be. About the game. Wii Sports is by definition a game just for fun and having a good time. Since it came included with the Nintendo Wii, it was mostly to show a little bit of what the console was capable of. It is a compilation of five different sports simulations, where the players had to use the motion controls of the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. The five Sports included were Golf, Bowling, Boxing, Baseball, and Tennis. And you could choose whether you wanted to play by yourself against the computer, or you could play with up to three other people. Teamwork and rivalries were the core of the fun on Wii Sports. The players had to use the Wii Remote to mimic the moves of the sports, like the swing of a baseball bat or golfing club. Use it as if they were throwing a bowling ball, or even throwing punches on intense boxing fights. Even though they were basically minigames, they served well to display how the Wii was up for a more active style of gaming. Less is more. There wasn't a single thing complicated in Wii Sports, and everything was stripped down to the basics. Even the visuals, having all the characters be the players' created Mii avatar, so the graphics were as basic as they could. Of course, simplicity was the core of the fun in Wii Sports, it was a home console game for the whole family. This means the controllers had to be as simple as possible, and they managed to do an incredible job with this by basically removing the controllers and making them entirely motion- control. The only times you had to press buttons was to navigate to the overly simplified menus of the game, and that was just an incredibly small fraction of the game. Wii Sports is a particularly hard to review game, not only 'cause it's basically a tech demo for the Nintendo Wii composed only of basic Mini Games but also 'cause it's free. In any case, it served its purpose well, it was fun for the whole family and people could start having fun with their Wii as soon as they got it out of the box without having to buy a single game- But obviously, if you wanted to play with more people, you'd need more controllers, so there's that. Wii Sports is incredibly simple, and it doesn't even require motion controls. Later or, there would be a sequel of the game called Wii Sports Resort, which made use of the Wii Motion Plus. The more advanced motion controllers were combined with many more sports and different ways to play them. and Even Xbox had its own parallel to Wii Sports when they released their motion-control camera for the Xbox 360, the Kinect. Even though Kinect Sports was much more advanced and complex, it just wasn't as successful, and it makes sense since the Kinect itself wasn't all that successful at all. The best Wii games of all time. Looking back at the best Wii games will make you appreciate the codename that the Wii went under. The Wii's codename was the "Revolution", and despite the eventual name change you can't deny that a revolution is what the Wii was. With its cheap price, accessible controls, and a veritable cornucopia of games, it helped bring gaming to the mainstream. Like many revolutions, we can only appreciate the Wii fully in hindsight. In the Wii's heyday, we could've overlooked any number of its wonderful games. But today, we can look back at the system's complete library and highlight 25 of its absolute best. Join us and enjoy our countdown of the 25 best Wii games of all time. (By the way, as a rule we didn't allow multiple entries in a franchise on the list. It keeps things more interesting.) 25. The House of the Dead: Overkill. There have been lightgun-style games for almost as long as there have been home game consoles, but The House of the Dead: Overkill is easily one of the best in class, let alone on the Wii. Good old-fashioned zombie slaying mixed with grindhouse cinema presentation make this a fun (and funny) title that meshes naturally with the Wii Remote's design. 24. Mario Kart Wii. Were it not for its Wii U sequel, Mario Kart Wii would undisputably hold the crown for best Mario Kart game. The addition of more riders per race, motorbikes, a tweaked drifting system, and the ability to perform tricks were all hailed as major improvements, and the courses are as wonderful as they've ever been. 23. Punch-Out!! Reboots and remakes are a tricky business. You want the experience to feel fresh, but you need to pay respect to what came before. Thankfully, Punch-Out!! for the Wii does exactly that, bringing back the dodge, dodge, punch rhythm that made the original such a classic, and wrapping it up in a beautifully stylized package. 22. Rhythm Heaven Fever. With its simple design and gyroscope sensor, the Wii Remote makes for a great music game controller. And while Just Dance parties were fun, it was Rhythm Heaven Fever that stuck with you, ensaring players with its adorable visuals, cutesy storylines, and catchy tunes. Plus, it had a certain wacky charm that simply can't be described on the back of a box. 21. Excitebots: Trick Racing. Excitebots: Trick Racing proves that it's not all about how fast you cross the finish line, but how cool you looked when you did it. Rather than focus on tight curves and single-file racing speedways, Excitebots features large, sprawling courses with multiple pathways. And while you may end up in first place just from being fast, you'll want to challenge yourself to be the best trickster too. Wii Sports Club will automatically download with SpotPass approval. Wii Sports Club , the Wii U remake of Wii Sports , will automatically download to players' consoles if they have opted to receive content via SpotPass, according to a recent Iwata Asks feature for the title. The game will download automatically provided players have 1.3 GB of available free memory. In the feature, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also revealed that Namco Bandai was brought into development on Wii Sports Club to help polish the game and add in support for online play. Wii Sports Club will launch on Nov. 7 in North America and Europe. The game will launch with five games brought over from the original Wii Sports: Bowling, Tennis, Baseball, Boxing and Golf. Players who download Wii Sports Club will get a 24-hour trial pass to play the games, after which Day Passes for the games can be purchased for $1.99.

More Than a Game: Sports-Themed Video Games and Player Narratives Garry Crawford and Victoria K. Gosling University of Salford This article considers the social importance of sports-themed video games, and more specifically, discusses their use and role in the construction of gaming and wider social narratives. Here, building on our own and wider sociological and video games studies, we advocate adopting an audience research perspective that allows for con- sideration of not only narratives within games but also how these narratives are used and located within the everyday lives of gamers. In particular, we argue that sports- themed games provide an illustrative example of how media texts are used in identity construction, performances, and social narratives.

[Purpose] Balance is an integral part of human ability. The smart balance master system (SBM) is a balance test instrument with good reliability and validity, but it is expensive. Therefore, we modified a Wii Fit bal- ance board, which is a convenient balance assessment tool, and analyzed its reliability and validity. [Subjects and Methods] We recruited 20 healthy young adults and 20 elderly people, and administered 3 balance tests. The corre- lation coefficient and intraclass correlation of both instruments were analyzed. [Results] There were no statistically significant differences in the 3 tests between the Wii Fit balance board and the SBM. The Wii Fit balance board had a good intraclass correlation (0.86–0.99) for the elderly people and positive correlations (r = 0.58–0.86) with the SBM. [Conclusions] The Wii Fit balance board is a balance assessment tool with good reliability and high validity for elderly people, and we recommend it as an alternative tool for assessing balance ability.

  • Physical Rehabilitation with Virtual Reality and Wii Peripherals
Lean on Wii: Physical Rehabilitation With Virtual Reality and Wii Peripherals Fraser ANDERSON1, Michelle ANNETT, Walter F. BISCHOF Department of Computing Science, University of Alberta Abstract. In recent years, a growing number of occupational therapists have integrated video game technologies, such as the Nintendo Wii, into rehabilitation programs. ‘Wiihabilitation’, or the use of the Wii in rehabilitation, has been successful in increasing patients’ motivation and encouraging full body movement. The non-rehabilitative focus of Wii applications, however, presents a number of problems: games are too difficult for patients, they mainly target upper-body gross motor functions, and they lack support for task customization, grading, and quantitative measurements. To overcome these problems, we have designed a low-cost, virtual-reality based system. Our system, Virtual Wiihab, records performance and behavioral measurements, allows for activity customization, and uses auditory, visual, and haptic elements to provide extrinsic feedback and motivation to patients. Keywords. Virtual rehabilitation, tele-rehabilitation, virtual reality, Nintendo Wii Introduction The use of low-cost, commercial gaming systems for rehabilitation has received substantial attention in the last few years. Systems such as the Nintendo Wii encourage players to use natural actions to play games (e.g., swinging the arm to roll a bowling ball, or jogging in place to make a virtual character run). The Wii (and similar systems) has been integrated into rehabilitation programs [1] and has gained the support of occupational therapists because it is easy to use and has a wide variety of games available. While the Wii does have benefits, the games are not designed specifically for rehabilitation, leading the Wii to have many limitations: it cannot accurately monitor and track patients’ progress, games are often too difficult for patients, and there is a lack of appropriate and motivating feedback for patients.
