The Story a Ballet by David Nixon
The Story ACT I Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to Transylvania to conclude some business with the mysterious old nobleman, Count Dracula. A ballet by David Nixon OBE One night at the Count’s castle, three female Duration: approx. 115min + 20min interval vampires – the Brides of Dracula – try to seduce Harker. Angry, Dracula intervenes, feasts on Harker himself and is transformed into a younger man. Sponsored by Dracula Javier Torres Old Dracula Riku Ito Dracula travels to England, where Harker’s fiancée, Mina Murray Abigail Prudames Mina, is awaiting her beloved’s return. Meanwhile Lucy Westenra Antoinette Brooks-Daw Mina’s friend Lucy is choosing between two potential Taking Northern Ballet Jonathan Harker Lorenzo Trossello suitors, finally accepting the dashing Arthur Holmwood from stage to screen Dr Jack Seward Joseph Taylor over the morose Dr Seward. Arthur Holmwood Matthew Koon Renfield Kevin Poeung Dracula visits Dr Seward’s mental patient, Renfield, Dr Abraham Van Helsing Ashley Dixon and recruits him to do his bidding. He then lures Brides of Dracula Rachael Gillespie Lucy to a cemetery and bites her before feeding Sarah Chun her his own blood. The next day, Mina is concerned by Lucy’s odd behavior, but when Minju Kang she tries to help, she meets Dracula and the two are immediately drawn to each other. Tortured by the grasp Mina has on him, Dracula enacts his revenge on Lucy. Holmwood, Choreography, David Nixon OBE Seward and his mentor Van Helsing try to rescue her but are too late. Message from the President Paul Helfrich, President & CEO, Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Welcome to Dayton Ballet’s epic production of Dracula: Bloodlines! We’re glad you’re here. On July 1, we celebrated the sixth birthday of the historic merger of the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra into one operating entity, the first and only merger of its kind in the United States. As we begin our seventh year of working together, I’d like to take a brief look back at some of our activities and accomplishments in the past season. We saw some exciting audience growth, with subscription sales up from the prior year by 7%, single-ticket sales up by 13%, and overall attendance up by 7%. Strong sales for productions including the Verdi Requiem, Swan Lake, Turandot, and a pops series concert with Jackie Evancho played a key role in these encouraging numbers. We thanked some departing staff members for a job well done and welcomed a few newcomers to the team. Pam Eyink and Ellen Bagley retired from our staff after 35 and 18 years, respectively, of outstanding service. We also said farewell to our longtime Ballet Production Manager, Stacie Bigl. Milena Treer now keeps all in order for Dayton Opera in her role as Artistic Administrator–Opera, and Cory Wilhite is the new Artistic Administrator for Dayton Ballet. We’re also pleased to welcome Emily Duffin in her new role as Production Stage Manager. In other staff news, Jeremy Davit succeeded Amber Rose as Chief Development Officer, and we also welcomed Dennis TenWolde and Karen Dempsey Volke to our fundraising team. -

Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America. -

No conventions in October, which is rare these days, but there was the Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com. They had some seriously good stuff, including writing from Diana Vick, who also appears in these pages, and myself! There was a great piece from Nisi Shawl that mentioned the amazing panel that she, Liz Gorinsky, Michael Swanwick and Ann VanderMeer were on at World Fantasy last year. Jaymee Goh had a piece on Commodification and Post-Modernism that was well-written, though slightly troubling to me. Stephen Hunt’s Steampunk Timeline was good stuff, and the omnipresent GD Falksen (who has never written for us!) had a couple of good piece. Me? I wrote an article about how Tomorrowland was the signpost for the rise of Steampunk. You can read it at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/goodbye-tomorrow- hello-yesterday. The slasher craze of the late 70s and early 80s, revitalized in the mid-90s, is once again a popular genre for Treinterpretation by today’s filmmakers and film composers. -
Core Collections in Genre Studies Romance Fiction

Even for college and Core Collections university libraries, where it is not a major focus, a solid core collection makes a welcome addition for students needing a break from their course load and supports a range of aca- in Genre Studies demic interests. Given the widespread popularity of genre books, understanding the basics of a given genre is a great skill for all types of librarians to have. Romance Fiction 101 It was, therefore, an important and groundbreaking event when the RUSA Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) voted to create a new juried list highlight- ing the best in genre literature. The Reading List, as the new list will be called, honors the single best title in eight genre categories: romance, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, horror, historical fiction, women’s fiction, and the adrenaline genre group consisting of thriller, suspense, and adventure.
