Koichi Mori, meu orientador, veio a falecer. 8 You’re gonna carry that weight. Japan in the expansion of the Capitalist World-Economy, 1853-68: Thought and political action. Dissertation (Master’s degree). Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas, Universidade de São Paulo, 2019. This work focus on the following question: how did the relationship between the Japanese nativist thought that emerged in the Tokugawa period, namely Kokugaku 国 学 and Mitogaku 水戸学, and the political action after the opening of the Japanese ports developed? Through the reading of textual sources and analysis of context, I consider that the thought then constructed, of a protonationalist character, supported several nationalist actions condensed under the term son’nô-jôi Its common points were, albeit unconsciously, the maintenance of Japanese sovereignty in contrast to what happened in China and the strengthening of Japan vis-à-vis the Western powers in the context of the expanding capitalist world-economy. With the privileged view that we have, it is possible to note the seeds and first steps of movements that would mark the history of the twentieth century. • The Opening of Japan
i i i i West Bohemian Historical Review VI j 2016 j 1 The Opening of Japan Eliška Lebedová∗ Since the first half of the 17th century Japan closed itself against the influence of the outside world. Only the Dutch traders could under strict restrictions enter the port of Nagasaki. This policy of so-called sakoku (isolation) was one of the cornerstones of the Tokugawa bakufu. However, since the turn of the 18th and 19th century the ships of the western pow- ers started to gain interest in the seas around Japan. The ruling Tokugawa regime was nevertheless anxious of the internal consequences of the opening of the country and turned away any effort of western Great Powers to open Japan to foreign trade. This policy was not however backed by military ability to repulse the foreigners if they came and tried to open Japan by force. The arrival of powerful fleet of Commodore Perry in 1853 therefore compelled the bakufu to sign a first treaty opening its ports to western country. Treaties with other countries followed soon and at the end of the 50s Japan had to sign a series of unequal treaties under the pressure of the Great Powers. This was a start of a whole new period of Japanese history. [Japan; Great Britain; United States; Russia; France; diplomacy; international relations; trade] Japan1 had always been an isolated and insular country due to its remote location. Foreign relations were limited to its relatively close neighbours in Asia. Trade agreements concluded in the 15th century with Korea and China led to the brisk exchange of goods, which was, however, accompa- nied by increased activities of Japanese pirates (wako¯) and Chinese smug- glers on the Chinese-Korean coast.2 Traders also sailed from Japan to Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

  • Idegenek a Láthatáron: Tokugawa Nariaki Felirata a Shōguni Kormányhoz 1853-Ban
Távol-keleti Tanulmányok 2014/1-2: 137–158. Szabó Balázs Idegenek a láthatáron: Tokugawa Nariaki felirata a shōguni kormányhoz 1853-ban Matthew Calbraith Perry sorhajókapitány 1853. július 8-án érkezett az Edói-öbölbe hajóival, s tíz napot töltött ott a japán hatóságokkal tárgyalva. Távozásakor jelezte tárgyalópartnereinek, hogy a következő év tavaszán visszatér makaói bázisáról a válaszért – ennek megfelelően 1854. február 13-án újra behajózott az öbölbe, immár hét hajóval, s a japán fél által a tárgyalásra kijelölt Yokohama faluban május 31-én amerikai részről aláírta a japán–amerikai barátsági szerződést.1 Ez az esemény nemcsak, hogy véget vetett az ország 250 éven át tartó bezárkózásának,2 de a körülötte fellángoló politikai viták végül a shōguni kormány (bakufu 幕府) bukásához és a Meiji-restaurációhoz vezettek.

Cullen Trinity College, University of Dublin, Dublin, Ireland Evaluation of archival sources on Japanese trade in the Tokugawa period and the first fifteen years of the Meiji period is the primary purpose of this two-part essay, of which Part 1 appears on the following pages and Part 2 will appear in Japan Review, Number 22. Surviving Japanese statistics of coastal trade (or “inland” trade, as opposed to foreign trade) are remark- able. In Europe, comparable figures were not compiled. For Osaka, some count appears to have been kept of a variable number of import items, and probably also of six sensitive “exports,” that is, items shipped from Osaka to Edo. Counting in 1714, 1736, and 1766 yielded aggregate fig- ures of the total trade of the port—rare statistics today, for other totals have not been passed down to us. For Edo, a consumption center, figures for outward shipping were never compiled. The only known coastal trade statistics for Edo are for the years 1723–1730, during which eleven items were recorded in Osaka (outwards) and in Edo (inwards), and 1856, for which a massive return survives.

  • A Comparative Analysis of the Differences Between
A Comparative Analysis of the Differences between Chinese and Japanese Modernization in the Mid-Late Nineteenth Century, with Particular Regard to the Idea of ‘Rich Nation and Strong Army’ _____________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Japanese at the University of Canterbury by Liao, Chih-Yu ______________ University of Canterbury 2005-6 Submitted February 2006 Abstract This thesis aims to search for the whys and wherefores of success and failure in Japan’s 'catching up' and China’s 'slowing down' on the path to modernization / Westernization from the mid-nineteenth century to approximately the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. First, in the introduction (Chapter One) I state what is the aim of the thesis; the definition of ‘modernization’; literature review; methodology; outline of the thesis; and problems and limitations. Chronologically, I divide the period into four phases for detailed discussion: legacies, formative, operative, and consequent. In ‘the legacies’ (Chapter Two), it is shown that elements of the legacies such as territorial integrity, population, and political, military, economic and social circumstances in Tokugawa Japan were relatively more conducive to modernization along Western lines than those in Ch’ing China. In the formative phase (Chapter Three), it is shown that the central government and regional provincial leaders in Ch’ing China knew little and did almost nothing to respond to the menace of the West. By contrast, the Tokugawa Shogunate and more particularly regional daimyō and samurai had a deep sense of crisis and early on launched a series of reforms.
