PRESS RELEASE 11 October 2016

Rovio creating new animated series starring the Blues and Hatchlings from The Movie Series to debut February 2017 on ToonsTV

Rovio Animation is producing a new 30-episode series of animated shorts in the Angry Birds universe starring the playful and competitive trio of bluebirds (known collectively as the Blues) and featuring their adorable Hatchling sidekicks. The episodes will debut for 30 consecutive weeks beginning February 2017 on ToonsTV, Rovio’s multiplatform video-on-demand family entertainment service.

The series further explores the humorous adventures of the manic blue triplets -- known to fans of Angry Birds since the original game release in 2009 -- and the Hatchlings, who were first introduced in a collection of hilarious and viral short animations leading up to the blockbuster release of . The Hatchlings also starred in “The Early Hatchling Gets the Worm,” a short film shown on the big screen before select screenings of The Angry Birds Movie and also included with the film’s smash in-home release.

The Hatchlings will also appear in a game currently in development at Rovio, and they are a focus for the company’s consumer products licensing program in 2017. Both long-standing and new partners of Kaiken Publishing, Rovio’s book publishing arm, are also excited about developing new titles around the Blues and Hatchlings.

“The Blues have long been some of our most mischievous characters, and telling their stories along with those of the younger Hatchlings expands the Angry Birds storyworld in an exciting and fun way with our key audiences of younger people and their parents,” says Alex Lambeek, Rovio’s Chief Commercial Officer. “The Hatchling videos shared online have already garnered more than 40 million views and counting in social media, and fans have been asking when we might see more of these ultra- adorable characters in new content.”

The new series will join other original Rovio animated series such as and Piggy Tales on ToonsTV, Rovio’s direct-to-consumer video platform with more than 6 billion views since 2013.

In addition to Rovio’s own in-house content, ToonsTV is also the home of high- quality family entertainment created by third parties such as Aardman (Wallace + Gromit, Morph), Toonbox Animation (Kit^n^Kate, Qumi-Qumi) and National Geographic. ToonsTV is available as a standalone app on Android, iOS and Amazon devices, on various smart TV systems including Apple TV, and as an in-game channel in Rovio’s mobile games.
