Today, more than 330 miles of paved trails connect many of our aviation heritage sites, including the Wright brothers’ neighborhood and the flying field where they perfected the airplane. Welcome to the March Sandwiching in History tour of the Dr. Morgan Smith House. I’d like to introduce and thank Alda and Buddy Ellis for allowing us to tour their beautiful home today. The Dr. Morgan Smith House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2009 as an excellent example of the Craftsman style of architecture in southwest Little Rock. Stagecoach Road Modern-day Stagecoach Road (also formerly known as 19th Street Pike and the Little Rock to Hot Springs Road) runs along the route of the Southwest Trail as it came through Little Rock. [The road gets its current name from the stagecoaches traveling the Southwest Trail.] The Southwest Trail was a network of overland routes in the 19th century stretching from the St. Louis area of Missouri to the Red River Valley in northeast Texas and northwest Louisiana. The Southwest Trail entered Arkansas in northeastern Randolph County and ran diagonally across the state, skirting the foothills of the Ozark Plateau and Ouachita Mountains and avoiding the swamps of eastern Arkansas, and came out at several crossings of the Red River in southwest Arkansas. The Southwest Trail was later known as the Military Road after Congress appropriated funds for its improvement in the 1830s. The Army resurveyed the route and cleared a better path at that time so it could be used as a mail route.

Only a few farms and a ferry occupied the landscape that would become one of the most important sites related to Indian removal. During the next decade and a half, as the Removal Act was executed, thousands of Choctaws, Muscogees, Florida Indians, Chickasaws, and Cherokees were removed from their ancestral lands east of the Mississippi to new areas west of Arkansas. The existing travel routes ensured that a majority of these tribal people traveled by the North Little Rock site on the river or passed through it, either to cross at the ferry and go southwest to the Red River country, or to take the Military Road to the northwest toward Fort Smith.

The bridge was constructed by the Youngstown Bridge Company of Youngstown, Ohio, a significant bridge-building company. The bridge crosses the river on the Old Military Road, an early route through Arkansas used by Indians and settlers. AR-46 PAGE 2 Built in 1891 by the Youngstown Bridge Company of Youngstown, Ohio, the Old River Bridge is the second oldest remaining bridge in Arkansas, and one of two known nineteenth-century bridges in the state. It is an excellent example of a pin-connected Pratt through truss, a common middle to late nineteenth-century bridge type. A unique feature of the bridge is the connection of the floor beams at each panel point. The floor beams are suspended from U-shaped bolts, which hang from the a pin through each vertical member. Ordinarily, the floor beam would be attached directly to the vertical with a series of rivets, thus making a rigid connection.
