Frankie Beverly & Maze Tribute Album In The Works Page 1 of 2 Powered by Frankie Beverly & Maze Tribute Album In The Works April 07, 2009 01:02 PM ET Gail Mitchell, L.A. Gospel star Donald Lawrence and Grammy-nominated producer Rex Rideout are among the first collaborators to sign up for an all-star tribute album honoring legendary R&B group Maze, Billboard has learned exclusively. "I Wanna Thank You...An All-Star Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly" is being produced through Brantera Music Group Inc., headed by Beverly's son Anthony. In addition to Lawrence, who is contributing a full-blown gospel version of Maze's 1984 track, "I Wanna Thank You," Anthony is currently negotiating with several other veteran and new artists from the R&B, gospel and jazz arenas. Rideout is serving as co-producer of the project, whose selections will include a cross section of memorable Maze tunes, among them: the No. 1 R&B hits "Back in Stride" and "Can't Get Over You," "Silky Soul," "Before I Let Go" and "Golden Time of Day." Getting its big break in the early '70s as the backing band and opening act on a Marvin Gaye tour, Maze signed with Capitol and later segued to Warner Bros.. The group's first major R&B chart credit was 1977's "While I'm Alone" which peaked at No. 21. "After 30 hit singles and 12 albums, I thought it was time to get this done," says Anthony, who doubles as the project's executive producer. "The group's longevity boils down to one word: real.

mazemaze featuringfeaturing frankiefrankie beverlybeverly simply the best. The man, the group, the band, its Frankie Beverly and Maze. The sound is so distinctive, original and soulful. For nearly forty years Frankie Beverly and Maze have created a unique sound and become one of the most influential groups in modern history. We see them large, in the spotlight, on the platform, moving and motivating millions with their music. MAZE…Featuring Frankie Beverly is one of the era’s consistent popular R&B groups, who have survived and that are still performing, and touring today. MAZE with their soft tone and silky music continues to pack venues across the country and beyond. The journey began when Frankie Beverly relocated from his hometown of Philadelphia to San Francisco and formed Maze. To understand Beverly even more is to know his humble beginnings. One learns why collecting music awards is near the bottom of his list of priorities. He wants to be known as one of the best pure musicians and songwriters in the business. He also plays rhythm guitar. As a child he idolized the group Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Frankie Beverly wasn’t even in his teens at the time, but Lymon’s stage presence was all it took to persuade him to follow in his footsteps. Other influences in Frankie Beverly’s life include James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Beverly also idolized the late Sam Cooke. He also was influenced by the legendary Marvin Gaye. a record-breaking run of hit-making music. Sounding “Black”: An Ethnography of Racialized Vocality at Fisk University Marti K. Newland Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Marti K. Newland All rights reserved ABSTRACT Sounding “Black”: An Ethnography of Racialized Vocality at Fisk University Marti K. Newland Through the example of students at Fisk University, a historically black university in Nashville, Tennessee, this dissertation ethnographically examines how vocality is racialized as “black” in the United States. For students at Fisk, voice serves as a mechanism of speaking and singing, and mediates ideological, discursive, embodied and affective constructions of blackness. Fisk built its legacy by cultivating and promoting a specific kind of New World blackness through vocal expression, and the indispensability of Fisk’s historical legacy shapes how the university continues to promote the self-worth of its students as well as a remembrance of and recommitment to the social justice and citizenship journey of black people through the 21st century. The relationships between expressive culture, the politics of racial inequality, and higher education experiences overdetermine Fisk students’ vocality in relation to blackness, in addition to students’ agentive choices to express and (re)form black racial identity. This dissertation traces the differences between curricular and non-curricular vocality to foreground the ways that students resist 21st century forms of racial violence and create paths towards the world they desire. The project opens with an analysis of the role of diction in the performance practice of the Fisk Jubilee Singers®.
