Yearbook 2010 I Trust in God I Love My Country and Will Respect Its Laws WSLL Yearbook 2010 I Trust In God I Love My Country And Will Respect Its Laws I Will Play Fair, And Strive To Win But Win Or Lose, I Will Always Do My Best – Little League Pledge P West spr ingfield lit tle le ague 2010 P Dear WSLL Members and Families, I am writing this letter shortly after coaching what is probably my last game on Three Rivers field. My children are growing older and won’t be on Three Rivers for their games anymore. This may not seem like a big deal to most of you, but Three Rivers was the field where I played my first T-ball game years and years ago. I still remember, to this day, playing T-ball with my mother watching from the stands and my father coaching. Today, I got to coach my son with my mother and father watching from the stands as grandparents. I am sure my parents were having flashbacks to me playing in the dirt while the batter was swinging, but also loving every moment of watching their grandchild. There is a point to that bit of nostalgia. Little League baseball is about creating memories for every generation involved. Each coach and manager in our league works hard to teach the fundamentals of baseball. We stress that it is a game and not the meaning of life. We strive to win, but if we lose we Greg Adams, WSLL President move on the next game. If one of our players makes a mistake, we pick them up and get them ready for the next play. We make sure that the game is not about one person, but a group of kids working together for a common goal as a team. When all is said and done the kids remember the friends they made, the epic battles of wall ball played against the concession stand and the games they watched with their parents hanging out after their own ball game. Take a look at the kids next time you’re at the field and see how much they love their Little League experience. When they are adults they will be reminiscing about their days at Byron Avenue Park as I am today. Enjoy the memories from the 2010 season. Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature By Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in Japanese Literature in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair Professor Alan Tansman Professor Beate Fricke Summer 2018 © 2018 Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe All Rights Reserved Abstract Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature by Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Literature University of California, Berkeley Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair My dissertation investigates the role of images in shaping literary production in Japan from the 1880’s to the 1930’s as writers negotiated shifting relationships of text and image in the literary and visual arts. Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work.

While English-language research in the field of Japanese film studies has tended to concentrate on earlier period film productions, particularly by world-known masters such as Kurosawa Akira, Inagaki Hiroshi, Kobayashi Masaki, Gosha Hideo and others, there is still a need to examine newer films in this genre. The focus of this thesis is therefore on a selection of nine recent jidaigeki released between 1997 and 2011; films that ranked among the top ten movies of the year by Kinema Junpō and/or had a domestic box office gross of JPY 15 billion. This was done to ensure that the films analyzed had either been of critical interest or had attained a certain success in movie theaters in Japan.
