A STORY OF LOVE The time we live in is so unpleasant that you wish you had not even been born, or rather that you had been born at some other time, on another occasion, simply because right now there is not enough love to go around. What is the use of big houses, expensive cars, winter holidays in Vysoke Tatry, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, expensive perfumes and briefings? These are just shadows of real life. We give ourselves up to the narcotics of delusion, the illusory, secret paths of life, and when it is already too late, with our eyes closed to our own failings, we reach maturity; we suddenly realize that it is too late to start again. The end is here, it is perhaps already peering around the next corner. There is no way we can steal back the years, steal happiness – if there is no love. There may seem to be sun and joy, you may imagine that your success is complete as you earn a medal, in the shadow of great men, but I have seen many who, pockets empty walk with heads held high around this town. Their joy in having nothing is much greater. Because they have this town. They have friends. They have a soul. They didn’t have money for Zagreb, Vienna or Prague. Their money was left in the glasses they emptied with friends with whom they later waited for the sunrise over the Croatian barricades. For some that waiting took too long and they were lost. But we know full well where they are. -

A secret that deserves to be revealed. Hidden in the obvious and ready for you. If you really think you deserve a vacation other than the sea or skiing, we suggest that after the daily stresses, the rush and the constant commitment, you finally decide to replace the stone and the sea, the holm oaks and the pines with the shade of Slavonian oak, the ash, the thick forest arch of Gorski Kotar, the greenery of Međimurje... Head, therefore, to that part of our country which is within our reach, green and flat or hilly and golden in its summer or autumn colors, and yet mostly distant and unknown to the most. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 2 Abstract This thesis employs historical, literary and anthropological methods to show how narratives of identity have been expressed in Croatia since 1991 (when Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia) through popular music and through talking about popular music. Since the beginning of the war in Croatia (1991-95) when the state media stimulated the production of popular music conveying appropriate narratives of national identity, Croatian popular music has been a site for the articulation of explicit national narratives of identity. The practice has continued into the present day, reflecting political and social change in Croatia (e.g. the growth of the war veterans lobby and protests against the Hague Tribunal).
