FREEDOM a Spin-Off of Procol Harum, Freedom Was FREEDOM A spin-off of Procol Harum, Freedom was formed by guitarist Ray Royer and drummer Bobby Harrison. Both of them were in Procol Harum's lineup at the outset for their debut "A Whiter Shade of Pale" single, but were ousted almost immediately when Procol singer, Gary Brooker, enlisted his former bandmates from the Paramounts, Robin Trower and Barry Wilson, as replacements. Freedom's early sound, perhaps unsurprisingly, echoed Procol Harum's in its prominent use of organ and piano, as well as heavy rock guitar, and like Procol Harum's early records, captured late British psychedelia as it was starting to inch toward progressive rock. Freedom wasn't a Procol Harum clone, though, with a somewhat poppier take on psychedelia that was closer to Traffic than Procol Harum. Their initial lineup only released two singles in 1968 before breaking up, also recording a soundtrack for an obscure Italian film by Dino De Laurentis, Attraction/Black on White. The soundtrack LP was given a limited release in Italy -- so limited, in fact, that the group members themselves were unaware that it had come out. Recorded with noted future producers Eddie Kramer and Glyn Johns engineering, this was reissued on CD in 1999, and is actually a pretty good if derivative slice of late-'60s British psychedelia. In 1968, Harrison decided to reorganize the band completely -- in fact, so totally that he was the only remaining original member. More albums came out in the late '60s and early '70s which, in keeping with overall British rock trends of the period, were in a much heavier, hard, bluesier style. These were middle-of-the-pack, or a little lower than the middle-of-the-pack, efforts with nothing to make them stand out from the crowd in a clogged field. They did get to tour the U.S. as support for Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, and broke up in 1972 after some personnel changes. Harrison became the lead singer in the little-known Snafu, while guitarist Roger Saunders, from the later incarnation of the band, did some session work, joined Medicine Head, and played in Gary Glitter's group during the '80s. .

Read Full Biography Overview Biography Discography Songs Credits Related Share on Artist Biography by Greg Prato Throughout his long and winding solo career, guitarist Robin Trower has had to endure countless comparisons to Jimi Hendrix due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix's bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style. Born on March 9, 1945 in Catford, England, Trower spent the early '60s playing guitar in various London-based outfits, the most successful being the R&B group the Paramounts, who specialized mostly in covers, but managed to issue several singles between 1963 and 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that Trower received his big break, however, when he joined Procol Harum. The group had just scored a worldwide smash hit with "A Whiter Shade of Pale," but the only problem was that the band's leader, singer/pianist Gary Brooker, didn't have a proper band to back him. Brooker was previously a bandmate of Trower's in the Paramounts, and offered the guitar slot in his new fast-rising project to his old friend. As a result, Trower appeared on such Procol Harum classics as 1967's Procol Harum, 1968's Shine on Brightly, 1969's A Salty Dog, 1970's Home (which spawned the popular Trower tune "Whiskey Train"), and 1971's Broken Barricades. While Procol Harum helped launch Trower's career, the guitarist realized there was limited space for his guitar work and eventually left for a solo career.

  • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

Radio 2’s Bob new places and then in March, it’s off to Germany to Harris played tracks from it over a few weeks before I begin our spring tour that will also include Austria, went into the studio to do a live session with him. This Switzerland, Holland and Belgium. was a real highlight for me because he really is such a cool guy with a genuine passion for music. • Trade Marks Inter Partes Decision O/047/20
O-047-20 TRADE MARKS ACT 1994 IN THE MATTER OF: AN APPLICATION (No. 502044) BY GARY BROOKER TO INVALIDATE TRADE MARK No. 1422867: PROCOL HARUM WHICH STANDS IN THE NAME OF KEITH REID Background and pleadings 1. The protagonists to this dispute are the founding members of the music group PROCOL HARUM. They both contributed to the writing1 of the group’s biggest hit and most well-known song, A Whiter Shade of Pale, released in 1967. 2. On 27 April 1990, Mr Reid filed for the trade mark PROCOL HARUM in his sole name. It is registered for “Entertainer services; all included in Class 41”. 3. In his claim to invalidate the registration, Mr Brooker relies on the following grounds: • Section 3(6) of the Trade Marks Act 1994 (“the 1994 Act”), because the filing of the mark by Mr Reid in his sole name constituted an act of bad faith. • Section 5(4)(a) of the 1994 Act, because the use of the mark by Mr Reid is capable of restraint under the common-law tort of passing-off. 4. When the trade mark was filed, the relevant law was contained in the Trade Marks Act 1938. However, as the mark was registered2 before the commencement of the 1994 Act, and in accordance with paragraph 2(1) of Schedule 3 of the 1994 Act, it was transferred to the new register and has effect as if it had been registered under the 1994 Act. Paragraph 18(2) of that schedule also makes clear that the provisions of section 47 of the 1994 Act (grounds for invalidity) apply in equal measure3 to existing registered [under the old law] marks, as it does to marks registered under the 1994 Act: 1 Notwithstanding the outcome of a copyright dispute in which the Supreme Court held that the group’s organist, Matthew Fisher, also made a contribution to the music, the organ part of the song.

  • PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum Are Still Going Strong
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels.

  • PROCOL HARUM Am Sonntag, 14.10.2018 Um 20:00 H Im Gasometer Bank Austria Halle Guglgasse 6 1110 Wien Ein
