The NOR is posted at KHYC.org. Race sign-ups are in person the morning of the regatta on the patio. New this year: to encourage woman sailors, if we have a fleet of three or more women at the helm, we will be awarding a trophy to the first boat to finish with a woman helmsman. The Awards Ceremony to follow on the patio. Join us for the On-Shore Party where there will be: live mu- sic on the patio provided by the very entertaining Evyn Charles, a Live Auction, and an Opportunity Drawing. Over $670,000 has been raised by this regatta, with all proceeds going to the King Harbor Yacht Club Tom Collier Memorial Cancer Research Lab at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. The lab is led by H. Phillip Koeffler, M.D., Director of Hematology/Oncology Division. Your financial support helps fund the specialized researchers who are continually investigating ways to stop this devastating disease! Every year the Regatta Committee asks the community to support this worthy cause in any of these ways:  Sail in the regatta — all boats are welcome!  Donate an auction item (gift certificate, basket, etc.)  Attend the onshore event — tickets are $25/person  Make a monetary donation using the form below. HONORING RON SCHMID

KHYF FINDS TREASURES FOR RON SCHMID MEMORIAL PLAQUE

The King Harbor Youth Foundation had always considered Photos by Tracey McMartin long-time KHYC Dock Master Ron Schmid as our “Patron Saint” for his longstanding commitment to the West Yard, rig- ging docks and hoists. Both Opti and FJ sailors are some of the largest beneficiaries of the resources that Ron provided. Ron also contributed labor and intelligence towards repairing the Youth Foundation boats. The proverbial ‘time, treasure, talent’! In an effort to honor Ron, the KHYF sailors gathered at Ron’s home in Redondo Beach in June, under the supervision of S/C Kelly McMartin and Director Tracey McMartin, to hunt through Ron’s garage workshop for items that would be suit- able to use on a memorial plaque to commemorate Ron’s many contributions to the KHYF. Kelly helped the youth sailors find a beautiful wood hatch that will be used as the base for the plaque. They also found and attached several pieces of memo- rabilia and various ’parts’ onto the hatch as a memorial to Ron. Our plan is to mount this plaque in ‘Optiland’ (a.k.a. the West Yard outside the Hood Room) as a tribute to Ron and as a re- minder to current and future sailors about the importance of hard work, volunteerism, and an ownership culture. A second event to commemorate Ron was The Ron Schmid Workday on Saturday June 19th, where our sailors and family came down to the West Yard to repair Youth Foundation boats and equipment. “It won’t fix itself!” is the motto that we will always remember Ron saying and what KHYF is taking it to heart with our Ron Schmid Workday.
