The Presidential Years1 es el último libro publicado bajo la autoría de Nelson Mandela, y en el cual Mandla Langa, un escritor sudafricano, ejerce de coautor. Esta obra fue pensada por Mandela como la autobiografía de sus años presidenciales, en la que con su puño y letra2, pretendía detallar de forma íntima los aspectos más relevantes durante su ascenso y posterior ejercicio del poder, desde las negociaciones con el gobierno de Frederik De Klerk, pasando por conflictos internos dentro del Congreso Nacional Africano (CNA) y demás movimientos afines a su lucha democrática, su inagotable trabajo para detener una posible guerra civil en Sudáfrica, hasta su esfuerzo día 1 El título en español que se le ha dado al libro es El Color de la Libertad. El autor de esta reseña ha leído la versión original del libro y las traducciones de las citas han sido hechas por él mismo. 2 Tal y como reseña el libro, los borradores que escribió Mandela para este libro siempre fueron hechos a mano. En el libro se aprecian fotografías de algunos borradores con la caligrafía de Mandela. Samuel Rodríguez González tras día en la búsqueda de la reconstrucción del país en términos sociales, raciales, políticos y económicos. Sin embargo, como lo reseña en el prólogo su viuda Graça Machel, la tarea quedó incompleta y Madiba3, por múltiples razones, no pudo terminar el trabajo, y fue esta una fuente de frustración en sus últimos años. -

African Studies Quarterly | Volume 9, Issue 4 | Fall 2007 "Mannenberg": Notes on the Making of an Icon and Anthem1 JOHN EDWIN MASON Abstract: Abdullah Ibrahim's [Dollar Brand] composition "Mannenberg" was an instant hit, when it was released on the 1974 album, Mannenberg is Where It's Happening. This paper shows that the song is a product of Ibrahim's efforts to find an authentically South African mode of expression within the jazz tradition, blending South African musical forms -- marabi, mbaqanga, and langarm--with American jazz-rock fusion. It quickly became an icon of South African jazz, defining the genre both within the country and overseas. At the same time, the South African coloured community invested the song with their own meaning, transforming it into an an icon of their culture and of themselves. In the 1980s, "Mannenberg" had a second life as an anthem of the struggle against apartheid. Some called it South Africa's "unofficial national anthem." Once again, the song acquired a new meaning, this time through the efforts of musicians, especially Basil Coetzee and Robbie Jansen, who made it the musical centerpiece of countless anti- apartheid rallies and concerts. As the paper traces this narrative, it is constantly aware of the profound influence of African-American culture and political thought on Ibrahim and the coloured community as a whole. Introduction On a winter's day in 1974, a group of musicians led by Abdullah Ibrahim (or Dollar Brand, as most still knew him) entered a recording studio on Bloem Street, in the heart of Cape Town, and emerged, hours later, having changed South African music, forever. -

By contrast, in the 2011 edition of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival everything begins with songs. With its theme “On Wings of Song” (after the eponymous lied by Felix Mendelssohn), the Festival will take place between 27 January and 13 February, offering an exciting tribute to vocal music and to music inspired by vocal genres. The spectrum ranges from Mozart’s Requiem, via Schubert’s epic song- cycle Die Winterreise and African choral music, to cabaret songs by Weill and Eisler and back to a programme of operatic arias and duets by Mozart. -

Despite attempts by some in the new ANC leadership to airbrush out his role, there can be little doubt that Mbeki was a seminal figure in South Africa’s new democracy, one who left a huge mark in many fields, perhaps most controversially in state and party management, economic policy, public health intervention, foreign affairs and race relations. -

3.1. Profiles of Speakers Gillian Marcelle Gillian Marcelle has been active in the telecommunications and ICT policy arena for the past 12 years. She has worked as an academic, a regulator, in the private sector and as a consultant to NGOs, private sector companies, national governments and international organisations. Gillian is a member of the High Level Panel advising the United Nations on ICT and development issues in preparation for the 55th session of the General Assembly. Gillian trained as an economist at the University of the West Indies, and obtained an MBA from George Washington University. She is currently reading for a Dphil in Science and Technology Policy at Sussex University. Bill Melody Bill Melody is Course Director of the Master of Business Telecommunications programme, and the Telecom Regulatory Training programme at Delft University, the Netherlands. He is also Guest Professor and Chair, International Advisory Board, Centre for Teleinformation, Technical University of Denmark. Professor Melody is editor contributing authority to Telecom Reform, which is used in more than 100 countries for education and training, He is also editor of the journal Telecommunications Policy. Peter Benjamin Consultant: Learning Information Networking and Knowledge (LINK) Centre, Graduate School of Public Development, University of the Witwatersrand. Peter has qualified for a BSc Physics (Hons), Oxford University and MSc Information Technology, De Montford University, UK. He is currently registered for a PhD in Community use of ICT with scholarship from Aalborg University, Denmark. He attended school and university in Pietermaritzburg, graduating from the then University of Natal with a BA.LLB in 1972. At University, he met one of the founders of Afrapix, Paul Weinberg, who was also studying law. In 1975 he joined a commercial studio in Pietermaritzburg, Eric’s Studio, as an apprentice photographer. In 1977 he joined The Natal Witness as a photographer/reporter, and in 1979 moved to the Rand Daily Mail as a photographer. In 1979, Alfers was offered a position as Photographer/Fieldworker at the National University of Lesotho on a research project, Analysis of Rock Art in Lesotho (ARAL) which made it possible for him to evade further military service. The ARAL Project ran for four years during which time Alfers developed a photographic recording system which resulted in a uniform collection of 35,000 Kodachrome slides of rock paintings, as well as 3,500 pages of detailed site reports and maps. -

Panel 1, ‘Charting “Black Opera”’ (17 June), continues BORN’s inaugural discussion series about research and practice in the field of Black Opera. Panel 2, ‘Opera, Commemoration, and the Racialized Politics of Place’ (23 June), is a special event to mark three June dates central to Black political history around the world. Panel 1: Charting ‘Black Opera’ Thursday 17 June 2021, 12pm EST / 5pm BST / 6pm CAT / 9am PDT What is Black? What is Opera? When does something qualify as ‘Black Opera’? In the second of its series of inaugural panels, BORN grapples with the parameters of its own terms of reference. Taking as a starting point the ‘Black Opera Database’ created By BORN affiliates Allison Lewis and Nicholas Newton, the conversation interrogates the politics of racial categorization and generic classification. We ask what institutional integration might mean for works of art that resist prevailing taxonomies of opera and Blackness. Finally, panellists ask if it is possiBle to circumscriBe the field of ‘Black opera’ without allowing practitioners or their works to Be co-opted into a politics of inequality and/or exclusion. Commanded the security branch of the police from January 1986 until October 1989 when he was promoted to deputy commissioner of the South African Police. Became a general in January 1990 when he 11 February 1990: Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison, near Paarl. became commissioner of the South African Police. Retired in March 1995. 27 February 1990: Arrives in Lusaka, Zambia, on his first trip out of South Africa since 1962. Verwoerd, Dr Hendrik Frensch 4 May 1990: He and President F. W. de Klerk sign the Groote Schuur Minute (1901–66). Prime minister of South Africa, 1958–66. Minister of native affairs, 1950–58. agreeing on a common commitment towards the resolution of the National Party politician. Widely considered the architect of apartheid, he advocated a system political conflict, peaceful negotiations, the return of exiles, release of of ‘separate development’. Under his leadership South Africa became a republic on 31 May political prisoners and to lifting the State of Emergency. 1961. Assassinated in Parliament by Dimitri Tsafendas. 6 August 1990: Signs the Pretoria Minute suspending the armed struggle and concerning the release of political prisoners, the return of exiles and Victor Verster Prison obstacles in the Internal Security Act. Low-security prison located between Paarl and Franschhoek in the Western Cape.
