Direct microscopy and culturing of vaginal swabs revealed that only 93 cases (64.1 %) were confirmed to be affected by yeasts. The majority of patients were 21-40 years old representing 70% of the positive cases. Yeast infection was more encountered in women receiving oral contraceptives (40%) than in those complaining of diabetes mellitus (25%) or treated with corticosteroids (17%). Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of yeast isolates showed that Candida albicans was the most prevalent species affecting 45.2% of patients, followed by C. krusei and C. tropicalis (20.4 % and 10.8% respectively). C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis were rare (3.3% and 1.1% respectively). Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Geotrichum candidum occurred in 18.3% and 1.1% of vaginal samples respectively. Protease was produced by 83 out of 93 isolates tested (89.2%) with active isolates belonging to C. albicans and C. krusei. Lipase was produced by 51.6% of isolates with active producers related to C. -

C. neoformans enters the host by inhalation and protects itself from immune assault in the lungs by producing hydrolytic enzymes, immunosuppressants, and other virulence factors. C. neoformans also adapts to the environment inside the host, including producing metabolites that may confer survival advantages. One of these, acetate, can be kept in reserve as a carbon source or can be used to weaken the immune response by lowering local pH or as a key part of immunomodulatory molecules. -

Safety Precautions for Working with Cryptococcus neoformans The basidiomycete fungus Cryptococcus neoformans is an invasive opportunistic pathogen of the central nervous system and the most frequent cause of fungal meningitis worldwide. Although Cryptococcus is a problem in the United States, it is significantly more prevalent and especially devastating in the developing world, such as sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in in more than 625,000 deaths per year worldwide. C. neoformans survives in the environment within soil, trees, and bird guano, where it can interact with wild animals or microbial predators, maintaining its virulence. Human infection is thought to be acquired by inhalation of desiccated yeast cells or spores from an environmental source. C. neoformans can colonize the host respiratory tract without producing any disease. Infection is typically asymptomatic, and it can be either cleared or enter a dormant, latent form. When host immunity is compromised, the dormant form can be reactivated and disseminate hematogenously to cause systemic infection. C. neoformans can infect or spread to any organ to cause localized infections involving the skin, eyes, myocardium, bones, joints, lungs, prostate gland, or urinary tract, in addition to its propensity to infect the central nervous systems. The following diseases and medications are risk factors for C. neoformans infection and are associated with at least some degree of immunosuppression: Ø HIV/AIDs (CD4 < 100cells/mm) Ø Corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications for cancer, chemotherapy, or organ transplants Ø Solid organ transplantations Ø Diabetes mellitus Ø Heart, lung, or liver disease Ø Pregnancy Even otherwise healthy, fully immunocompetent individuals can develop cryptococcosis, as may well be the case in a lab accident. -

Rotten samples were collected from five different localities such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Puri, Balasore and Bhadrak. Three fungal species such as Aspergillus niger, Geotrichum candidum and Rhizopus oryzae were isolated from the rotten samples. Of these, Geotrichum candidum has highest percentage frequency of occurrence in both carrot and radish. In carrot next to Geotrichum candidum, Rhizopus oryzae showed more frequency of occurrence than Aspergillus niger but in case of radish the case is just opposite, here the percentage frequency of occurrence of Aspergillus niger was found to be more than Rhizopus oryzae. Pathogenicity tests revealed that all the isolated fungi were pathogenic to their respective host storage roots. However, Rhizopus oryzae was found to be most pathogenic on carrot leading to rapid disintegration of the infected roots while Geotrichum candidum was the least pathogenic. -

At times, some toxic by-products are generated, affecting aquatic ecosystems. In this article, an efficient use of microorganisms is presented as a biodegradation technique that is a safe environmental alternative for the benefit of aquatic life. A strain of the yeast Galactomyces geotrichum KL20A isolated from Kumis (a Colombian natural fermented milk) was used for Methylene Blue (MB) bioremoval. Two parameters of the bioremediation process were studied at three different levels: initial dye concentration and growth temperature. The maximum time of MB exposure to the yeast was 48 h. Finally, a pseudo-first-order model was used to simulate the kinetics of the process. The removal percentages of MB, by action of G. geotrichum KL20A were greater than 70% under the best operating conditions and in addition, the kinetic simulation of the experimental results indicated that the constant rate of the process was 2.2 × 10-2 h−1 with a half time for biotransformation of 31.2 h. -

The present study was done in order to identify the fungus invading some of the supralittoral ponds used for shrimp aquaculture in the CIBNOR facilities in La Paz, Baja California Sur (BCS), México during the summer season. From the walls and bottoms of the ponds, two strains of Geotrichum spp. were isolated and morphologically identified. Fungal adhesion towards hemocytes and primary cultures of various white shrimp (Litopeneaus vannamei) tissues (gill, tegument, and gut) was analyzed to determine infectivity. Extracellular protease, lipase, and amylase activity were evaluated as virulence factors. Survival of shrimp post- larvae (PL8) exposed to fungal culture supernatant or to their filaments was also investigated. The results showed that shrimp tegument cells and hemocytes were very susceptible to Geotrichum spp. invasion, and that this fungus provokes great mortality of post-larvae. Hence, Geotrichum spp. -

With respect to its significance in the dairy industry, the growth of Geotrichum candidum isolate J in milk without and with 1% NaCl was investigated under isother- mal conditions ranging from 6 to 37 ◦C. The mechanistic model by Baranyi and Roberts was used to fit the fungal counts over time and to estimate the growth parameters of the isolate. The ef- fect of temperature on the growth of G. candidum in milk was modelled with the cardinal models, ◦ ◦ and the cardinal temperatures were calculated as Tmin = −3.8–0.0 C, Topt = 28.0–34.6 C, and ◦ Tmax = 35.2–37.2 C. The growth of G. candidum J was slightly faster in milk with 1% NaCl and in temperature regions under 21 ◦C. However, in a temperature range that was close to the optimum, its growth was slightly inhibited by the lowered water activity level. The present study provides useful cultivation data for understanding the behaviour of G. -

The lowest total fungal count was in Akel's factory samples, but El-Eman's factory was the highest count being 0.8×105 and 1.6×105 colony forming unit/gram (cfu/g), respectively. A total of 66 fungal isolates were examined in this study. The classification position of obtained fungal isolates were classified in three families (Endomycetaceae, Mucoraceae and Trichocomaceae), 6 genus and 13 species as following Geotrichum candidum, Aspergillus ochraceus, A. alliaceus, A. oryzae, A. niger, A. nidulans, Emericella nidulans, A. flavus, A. glaucus, A. flavipes, Penicillium sp., Mucor sp. and Rhizopus stolonifer. Most of fungal strains were found in El-Ashmawy's factory and Abdo Gohar's factory being 7 strains, but Akel's factory and El-Eman's factory were lower being 5 species and the last were El-Safa's factory and El-Faiomy's factory being 4 strains belonging to the genus Aspergillus being A. ochraceus; A. oryzae; A. niger and A. glaucus. A. oryzae was observed in all factories except Abdo Gohar and El-Eman's factories being 39.39% while the other strains were attributed according to their percentages.
