Received 3rd February 2015/ Accepted 30th June 2015 Abstract. Jasmine (Jasminum sambac L.) is a flowering plant that grows in shrub form. Jasmine flowers have been extensively used as ornamental and for the production of fragrances, flowers, tea and essential oils. The amount of essential oil that can be collected from jasmine petals is very small relative to the material required, but is valued as the raw material for natural perfume and aromatherapy treatments. This study attempted to improve propagation from explant to manipulate essential jasmine oil production. Modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, produced from carbohydrate precursor compounds (MS + 20 % fructose, MS + 20 % glucose and MS + 20 % sucrose), was used to produce explants from young leaves and calluses. Essential oil (benzyl acetate and jasmine) content was highest in jasmine explant calluses grown on MS + 20 % sucrose. The content of benzyl acetate reached 1.27 % and jasmone content reached 1.15 % in 12 weeks old calluses. Keywords: Benzyl acetate, Explant, Jasminum sambac L., Jasmone, Precursor. Direct microscopy and culturing of vaginal swabs revealed that only 93 cases (64.1 %) were confirmed to be affected by yeasts. The majority of patients were 21-40 years old representing 70% of the positive cases. Yeast infection was more encountered in women receiving oral contraceptives (40%) than in those complaining of diabetes mellitus (25%) or treated with corticosteroids (17%). Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of yeast isolates showed that Candida albicans was the most prevalent species affecting 45.2% of patients, followed by C. krusei and C. tropicalis (20.4 % and 10.8% respectively). C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis were rare (3.3% and 1.1% respectively). Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Geotrichum candidum occurred in 18.3% and 1.1% of vaginal samples respectively. Protease was produced by 83 out of 93 isolates tested (89.2%) with active isolates belonging to C. albicans and C. krusei. Lipase was produced by 51.6% of isolates with active producers related to C. -

Jones, MD ABSTRACT Purpose: To determine the risk factors and clinical signs of Curvularia keratitis and to evaluate the management and out- come of this corneal phæohyphomycosis. Methods: We reviewed clinical and laboratory records from 1970 to 1999 to identify patients treated at our institution for culture-proven Curvularia keratitis. Descriptive statistics and regression models were used to identify variables associ- ated with the length of antifungal therapy and with visual outcome. In vitro susceptibilities were compared to the clini- cal results obtained with topical natamycin. Results: During the 30-year period, our laboratory isolated and identified Curvularia from 43 patients with keratitis, of whom 32 individuals were treated and followed up at our institute and whose data were analyzed. Trauma, usually with plants or dirt, was the risk factor in one half; and 69% occurred during the hot, humid summer months along the US Gulf Coast. Presenting signs varied from superficial, feathery infiltrates of the central cornea to suppurative ulceration of the peripheral cornea. A hypopyon was unusual, occurring in only 4 (12%) of the eyes but indicated a significantly (P = .01) increased risk of subsequent complications. The sensitivity of stained smears of corneal scrapings was 78%. Curvularia could be detected by a panfungal polymerase chain reaction. Fungi were detected on blood or chocolate agar at or before the time that growth occurred on Sabouraud agar or in brain-heart infusion in 83% of cases, although colonies appeared only on the fungal media from the remaining 4 sets of specimens. -

Alternaria leaf spot, The experiment was analyzed by using RBD (randomized block design) with three 2 Cabbage, replications in a plot size 2x2m . Eight treatments were taken i.e. Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil, Eucalyptus oil and Clove oil, Trichoderma viride, Neem oil + Trichoderma viride, Eucalyptus oil + Clove oil, Trichoderma viride, Clove oil + Trichoderma viride along with the control. Observations Trichoderma viride, were recorded at disease intensity 30, 45 and 60 (days after Transplanting), plant growth Neem oil parameters such a yield (q/ha). Experiment revealed that Neem oil significantly reduced the Alternaria leaf spot of Cabbage, where among the use Neem oil seedling treatment @ Article Info 5% increased the yield. The maximum cost benefit ratio was recorded by Neem oil (1:3.26) Thus according to experimental finding and results discussed in the earlier Accepted: chapter, it is concluded that Neem oil reduced the Alternaria leaf spot of Cabbage, where 22 July 2020 among the Neem oil seedling application found maximum yield was significantly superior Available Online: 10 August 2020 as compare to other treatments. -

Kononowicza* aDepartment of Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz, 90-237 Lodz, Poland; and bDepartment of Biological Sciences, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061, USA Development of the necrotrophic fungus Alternaria brassicicola was evaluated during infection of three cabbage vari- eties: Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. alba ‘Stone Head’ (white cabbage), B. oleracea var. capitata f. rubra ‘Langedi- jker Dauer’ (red cabbage) and B. oleracea var. capitata f. sabauda ‘Langedijker Dauerwirsing’ (Savoy cabbage). Following inoculation of cabbage leaves, conidial germination, germ tube growth, and appressorium formation were analysed during the first 24 h of infection. Differences in the dynamics of fungal development on leaves were observed, e.g. approximately 40% of conidia germinated on Savoy cabbage leaves at 4 h post-inoculation (hpi) while only 20% germinated on red and white cabbage leaves. Leaf penetration on the three cabbage varieties mainly occurred through appressoria, rarely through stomata. Formation of infection cushions was found exclusively on red cabbage. Appresso- ria were first observed on red cabbage leaves at 6 hpi, and on white and Savoy cabbage leaves at 8 hpi. Conidiogenesis occurred directly from mature conidia at an early stage of fungal development (10 hpi), but later (48 hpi) it occurred through conidiophores. Disease progress and changes in the morphology of leaf surfaces were also observed. At the final 120 hpi measurement point, necroses on all investigated varieties were approximately the same size. -

The first patient presented for investigation of a lesion at the right hilum on chest radiograph and a raised blood eosinophil count. A bronchogram showed complete block of the apical segmental bronchus which at operation was shown to be caused by inspissated material. The second patient was investigated because of a cough productive of plugs of sputum and irregular opacities in both upper zones on chest radiograph and a raised blood eosinophil count. This only cleared after one month on high dose oral prednisone therapy. The third patient with a previous history ofleft lingular pneumonia and bronchiectasis ofthe lingular segment ofthe left upper lobe was investigated three years later for right basal shadowing and a raised blood eosinophil count. The radio- graph cleared after one month on high dose oral prednisone treatment. The aetiological agents in these cases were dematiaceous hyphomycetes, fungi ubiquitous in nature, and also agents of plant disease. The causal fungi, Curvularia hlnata and Drechslera hawaiiensis, have on a few occasions been reported as causing human disease but in cases quite dissimilar to the three reported here. Septate branching dematiaceous mycelium was consistently seen in the clinical material and isolated from http://thorax.bmj.com/ successive sputum specimens from each patient. -

We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation. -

Our research interest is the antibacterial activity of secondary metabolite crude extracts from the medicinal plant Solanum mauritianum and its bacterial endophytes. Fresh, healthy stems of S. mauritianum were collected, washed, surface sterilized, macerated in PBS, inoculated in the nutrient agar plates, and incubated for 5 days at 30 ◦C. -

The large rectangular tiles on pillars A, B, C, D are inspired by Wangari Maathai’s “I Will be a Hummingbird” story. This folk tale poignantly illustrates the importance of doing one’s best, no matter how insignificant our efforts may feel at times, in the face of a seemingly insurmountable task. Pillars: The mural pillars showcase the conceptual and artistic participation of the students and staff of the Student Community Center, and other members of the university community, who were invited to contribute their suggestions for the imagery featured, and who also participated in painting the individual tiles.
