Two things come to mind, one contemporary and one his- torical. Early on as I learned about tapestry, I saw Archie Brennan's goofy and sophisticated small pieces. They made me laugh out loud. They also reassured me that there was room for puns and slap-stick humor in tapestry, and that one could challenge the viewer to remember (this is woven) and forget (isn't this silly?) at the same time. Recently, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York had a fantastic exhibition of textiles, including tapes- tries, from Colonial Peru. Repeat images, which were not always exactly the same, peppered the faces of pon- chos. The colors were lively and warm. But also, looking at them, I had the impression that I was reading, per- haps hieroglyphs, but certainly a narrative. Very exciting. A note or two: Your usual editor, Linda Rees, asked me to sit in as guest editor because she wanted her book on Muriel Nehznie to be reviewed, and knew she could not be the editor when that happened. Her clarity about the ethics of her situation impressed me, and it is the main reason I said yes. She devoted her help, constant and with infi- nite good humor and patience, entirely for the technical aspects – whom do I contact for what, how do I deal with visuals, etcetera. She did not know that Barbara Heller would review her book, and neither knew that the other was writing in response to my challenge. It has baffled scholars for decades. These tapestries are shrouded in mystery, especially considering their commissioner, narratives, and sequence of hanging. However, for whom and how they were made is of little importance for this study. The most crucial question to be asked is: why the unicorn? What was the significance of the unicorn during the late Middle Ages? The goal of this thesis is to explore the evolution of the unicorn throughout the Middle Ages as well as important monarchal figures and central themes of aristocratic society during the period in which the tapestries were woven.

An image is what appears in a picture, and what survives its destruction–in memory, in narrative, in copies and traces in other media.”1 W.J.T Mitchell Introduction his is the story of how I met a series of artworks, medieval masterpieces, known as the Unicorn tapestries: The Lady and the T Unicorn in Musée de Cluny in Paris and The Hunt of the Unicorn from the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York. My first encounter with theses tapestries was through an online article from the New Yorker, Capturing the Unicorn, which tells the story of the conservation of the Unicorn tapesries of the Metropolitan Museum of art of New York. The contrast between reading the story of conservation, going to a library, seeing pictures on the screen, and the encounter in real life, made me think of how we perceive with our body in contrast to our new digital ways of looking. I will take you on a tour through to the public library of Amsterdam, Google Image search and the Musée de Cluny in Paris that shows my observations on the different ways we see in digital and physical places. I will present my experiences in a narrative that, mixes real observations with imagination.

This simple technique of textile construction was developed independently in many areas around the world in ancient times. Coptic tapestries from around the 6 th century in Egypt are the oldest evidence that exists today of tapestry as an ancient art form. These pieces are small in size, made from linen and wool, and most often displayed fish and Greek inspired motifs. Peruvian tapestries also display a skillful weaving process that focused on geometric designs. Chinese tapestries, known as k’o-ssu, were also created. These pieces displayed floral patterns made entirely from silk. As the technique developed, tapestry became the useful art of the Middle Ages in Europe. The tradition of European tapestry art is one that flourished between the 14 th and 18 th centuries.

Art is provincial in principle, preserving for itself a naive, external, astonished and envious outlook. -Andrei Sinyavsky, In Gogol's Shadow Nikolai Vassilyevich Gogol was born on April 1, 1809, in the village of Sorochintsy, Mirgorod district, Poltava province, in the Ukraine, also known as Little Russia. His childhood was spent on Vassilyevka, a modest estate belonging to his mother. Nearby was the town of Dikanka, once the property of Kochubey, the most famous hetman of the independent Ukraine. In the church of Dikanka there was an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, for whom Gogol was named. In 1821 Gogol was sent to boarding school in Nezhin, near Kiev. He graduated seven years later, and in December 1828, at the age of nineteen, left his native province to try his fortunes in the Russian capital. There he fled from posts as a clerk in two government ministries, failed a tryout for the imperial theater (he had not been a brilliant student at school, but had shown unusual talent as a mimic and actor, and his late father had been an amateur playwright), printed at his own expense a long and very bad romantic poem, then bought back all the copies and burned them, and in 1830 published his first tale, "St. John's Eve," in the March issue of the magazine Fatherland Notes. There followed, in September 1831 and March 1832, the two volumes of Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, each containing four tales on Ukrainian themes with a prologue by their supposed collector, the beekeeper Rusty Panko.

    PAINTED WALL TAPESTRIES NOTES Summary These notes are background information about the painted wall tapestries that Lady Eva von Danzig and I painted for use in the Barony of Innilgard to enhance the display at events with 15th century themes. Their first showing was at La Prova Dura in September 2010. The notes will cover subject matter, materials and method as well as the making up of the tapestries and storage. History of 15thC tapestries “The greatest tapestries of the 15th century were produced in the Flemish cities of Arras, Tournai, and Brussels. In the first half of the century it was Arras that particularly prospered under the patronage of the dukes of Burgundy. Duke Philip the Good (1396–1467) had a specially designed building erected in the city to allow for better conservation of his tapestry collection. Between 1423 and 1467 no fewer than 59 master tapestry weavers were working in Arras, but following the French siege of the city in 1477 under King Louis XI the industry declined.” (Encyclopaedia Britannica.) Subject Matter You can find many examples of suitable subjects to paint as wall hangings. In keeping with our aim to paint 15th century pieces it became obvious that we should look in the rich area of Mille Fleur (Thousand flowers) range of tapestries woven in the late 15th and early 16th century in France and Flanders. For the first project we settled on the Lady and the Unicorn tapestry À mon seul désir, a 15th century Flemish wool and silk tapestry (See below). This is the 6th tapestry in the Lady and the Unicorn series, the others depicting the five senses - Taste, Hearing, Sight, Smell and Touch.

    1 The Fruits and Nuts of the Unicorn Tapestries Jules Janick and Anna Whipkey INTRODUCTION The unicorn is a mythical beast with the body of a small milk-white horse, a single spiraling horn arising from its forehead, and with cloven hooves and chin whiskers like a male goat. The horn, resembling that of a narwhale, presumably had curative powers that allowed the unicorn to detoxify water. The unicorn became a popular subject in medieval art and is treated with both religious and erotic overtones. The fierce unicorn became both a symbol of the resurrected Christ and a courtly symbol of purity, grace, and love. The animal was fierce and elusive and could only be captured by a virgin who tamed the beast in her lap. Thus, the unicorn became a popular artistic subject in literature, paintings, and tapestries. There are two famous extant tapestries involving the unicorn: The Lady and the Unicorn (six tapestries) dating to the 1480s (Fig. 1) and now located in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, an allegory of the six senses; and The Hunt of the Unicorn (Fig. 2 and front cover) made between 1490 and 1505 (seven tapestries, one in two fragments) located in the Cloisters in Upper Manhattan, a branch of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Lady and the Unicorn series is formal, serene, and static, while the Hunt of the Unicorn is naturalistic, dynamic, and spirited. Both are overwhelmingly beautiful and represent the high point of the tapestry art form. The tapestries have been discussed in a number of works by art historians including Margaret B.

A. Hickson In 2014 the West Dean Tapestry Studio in England completed a commission for Historic Scotland, an agency of the Scottish government, to reproduce the late fifteenth-century Hunt of the Unicorn tapestry series on permanent display at the Cloisters Museum in New York City. The purpose of Historic Scotland’s reproductions is to heighten the tourist’s experience of authenticity in the Renaissance apartments at Stirling Castle, Scotland. This thesis explores Historic Scotland’s decision to reproduce The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries for the renovation of Stirling Castle’s royal apartments, and how this representation of Scottish heritage and identity challenges traditional boundaries of authorship and authenticity. Applying the concept of the simulacrum, specifically through the writing of Jean Baudrillard and Gilles Deleuze, the Unicorn tapestries are analyzed based on the contexts and authorities that inform perceptions of their status as either copies or originals, revealing authenticity to be a perceived construction. iii Table of Contents Page List of Illustrations ......................................................................................................

The heartland of Manhattan, Central Park encompasses 843 acres set aside for New Yorkers and visitors, enjoyed by 40 million people annually. lthough Central Park seems “natural”—the largest surviving piece of Manhattan unencrusted with A asphalt and masonry—its landscape and scenery are completely man-made, based on designs by Frederick Law Olmsted (see p. 309) and Calvert Vaux (see p. 314). Strolling around its peaceful, verdant lawns and slopes today, it is hard to believe that in the mid-19th century, before the adoption of Olmsted and Vaux’s Greensward Plan, the area was desolate, covered with scrubby trees, rocky outcroppings, and occasional fi elds where squatters grazed their pigs and goats. A garbage dump, a bone-boiling works, and a rope walk added their own atmosphere.
