A Carol Character List ​

Principal Characters (note: ages given are suggested ages of characters, not actors, and are flexible in many cases)

Charles Dickens - male, mid-30s+ - narrates the story as a staged reading - dramatic, but not pompous - proud of his work, and pleased to be able to present it to others - “reads” several longer paragraphs from the story - also fills in as incidental or minor characters in the story

Ebenezer - male, 50+ - a miserly, miserable, businessman who hates Christmas, and most people

Bob Cratchit - male, 20s - 40s - Scrooge’s long-suffering clerk, a kind and gentle man, devoted to his family, especially his son, Tiny Tim

Fred - male, 20s - 30s - Scrooge’s nephew, good natured, jovial, takes Scrooge’s insults and rejection with good humor and patience

Jacob Marley - male, 40+ - a - Scrooge’s deceased business partner, regretful of lost opportunities, who arrives to give Scrooge a chance at redemption

Ghost of Christmas Past - male or female, 18+ - a ghost - a gentle and wise spirit who shows Scrooge scenes from his past, showing Scrooge how his past shaped his current life

Fezziwig - male, 40+ - Scrooge’s past employer - a fun-loving, gregarious man with a tremendous sense of humor

Ebenezer - male, 20s - 30s - Scrooge’s younger self before he became cynical and mean, but showing the first signs of those traits

Belle - female, 20s - 30s - Younger Scrooge’s caring, sympathetic fiancee, who comes to realize that Ebenezer loves money more than he loves her

Ghost of Christmas Present - male or female, 20s+ - a ghost - the embodiment of - merry, jovial, spreading cheer throughout the world - shows Scrooge what he is missing in his present life

Tiny Tim - male, 6 - 10 - ’s sickly, disabled favorite child - a sweet child who loves his father and family very much

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come - male or female, any age - a ghost - a shrouded figure of doom, who shows Scrooge his frightening future - no dialogue, but a powerful presence in the story

Old Joe - male, 30+ - junk salesman who purchases Scrooge’s belongings after his “death” - greedy, uncaring, out to make a profit however he can

Mrs. Dilber - female, 30+ - Scrooge’s charwoman, who steals and sells anything and everything she can from her deceased employer - also greed, uncaring and not afraid to do what she needs to to make some money

NOTE: There are many other characters, each important in their way to telling this timeless story. Actors may be cast in more than one role, providing the opportunity to create multiple characters.
